Andalucia: A breather before the decisive Queen Stage.
Algarve: Also an easy stage in Algarve, but a lot more RuralvÃa action and a fine result. The final stage may be more of a challenge with the rather close GC.

Some calm before the storm probably, the last time I raced this Andalucia stage, time gaps were simply huge. In the Algarve it will be about defending rather than moving up, I think.

Vuelta a Andalucia (2.1) Stage 5/6, 124.9 kms
Several gifted climbers made the breakaway on this year's queen stage. Bagot and Vermeulen already showed good legs on today's first difficulty. On the next climb, Vermeulen caused a significant split within the group. On the third one, the two strongest escapees left Gallego behind as well. The first GC move came from n°13 Clément Chevrier, on the penultimate climb. He attacked from the group which still contained Ion and Ruben. Alexey Vermeulen started the Cuesta del Cielo summit finish with none of the other escapees nearby. Chevrier brought Vermeulen's bonus down to 2'45". Racing with somewhat heavy legs, Ruben settled for helping Ion. On the early slopes of the climb, Kelderman and Morton joined Chevrier. Ion quickly faced a time loss of over one minute as Ruben was dropped. The aforementioned trio kept putting time into the others. Hitting the last 5 kilometer Alexey Vermeulen's advantage came down to only just 1'05". The American was fortunate to have the three staring at one another. His first pro win came at an unsurfaced road in Andalucia, along with a move to GC 6th. Kelderman defended his overall lead well by finishing in third. Ion giving his all resulted in a 12th spot today. He drops into 7th overall. Volta ao Algarve (2.1) Stage 5/5, 165.6 kms
Ten riders broke free at the back of a wild opening. A crash and the first time on Alto do Malhão made the group split in half. The pack came at 2'. When all 10 were caught a quartet of unknown names appeared in front. Eleven kms from the finish, three contenders approached the leaders. It was strange to see the overall leader's teammate Hirt attack alongside A. Yates and Teklehaimanot. The three would quickly put 45" into the pack. Near the foot of last climb, Adam Yates and Teklehaimanot were the sole survivors. Vandenborre now played his last GC card by chasing himself. Sam tried, but Al Jadeedi acceleration was too much to handle. Too bad, because yellow jersey Thomas De Gendt was having his troubles as well. Al Jadeedi held off Yates to win the last stage. Sam came 10th and while gaining time on De Gendt, he dropped from second to third place overall. Tough day in Andalucia, better in Algarve losing a spot in GC but timewise actually closer.

Very tough day, GC is not too bad given the circumstances. And good to secure a podium in Algarve.

Vuelta a Andalucia (2.1) Stage 6/6, 95.1 kms
Jack Haig attacked from the breakaway of seven. The fifty-eight seconds lead seemed promising with only around 2 kilometers until the finish line. Today, MartÃnez decided to jump on the back of a different sprint train. In any case, the peloton came too late. Haig won the final stage from the breakaway, a first victory since last year's Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec. MartÃnez came 3rd in the bunch sprint, yet behind 4 riders of the break. Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne (1.1)
Flanders, 203.1 kms
Leopard's Mattia Frapporti was the only attacker for a while, until he was joined by Rohan Dennis and Massimo Vanderaerden. They arrived at the first climb of the heuvelzone, La Houppe, with a gap of almost 5 minutes. The trio lost 3'30" over the next 10 kms. Atop the cobbled Kruisberg, the pack caught sight of the escapees, with still 95 kilometers left to Kuurne. An elite group with Benoot, Terpstra, Helling caught up with the break on the Oude Kwaremont. The newly-formed 12-man lead group gained 52". Chasers came back when the pace dropped. Among them were Federico Zurlo and Nélson Oliveira. The next up Tiegemberg wasn't the hardest. In the meantime, our sprinter MartÃnez sat suck in the pack, 2'45" back. Lotto-Soudal outnumbered the other teams in the front group. Their pace was the reason why Oliveira and Zurlo both lost contact with the group. While we spent the last 35 km away from the fore, 13 riders sprinted for the win. A very confident Kristoff created a gap, prior to a proper launch. Things almost did work out, until Caleb Ewan surpassed him on the final hectometers. Arnaud Demare claimed the third and lowest podium place. MartÃnez was our first rider to cross the finish, more than four min later. GP Le Samyn (1.1)
Hainaut, 204.1 kms
Mathias Van Gompel and Sebastian Deckert spent the whole day riding in front. At the start of the local circuit, spiced up with the cobbles of la Rue Roquette, the two leaders had an advantage of 2'15" over a intact bunch. Everything came back together with still two laps and 50 kilometers left. On the final lap, Andre Looij accelerated from a thinned bunch. Greg Van Avermaet came to the front, with the intention to reel in the Dutch rider. Van Avermaet quit when no one wanted to help, and André Looij rode to a unthreatened win. MartÃnez and a tired Cortes finished in group four. Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne:
Those kind races are very hard if you haven’t got a super top-top team to lead your sprinter back to the front, or a cobbler to stay with the best all the way.
GP Le Samyn:
Better, but even in a bunch sprint hard if your sprinters legs are terrorised by the stone sections.

Painful at times how our shortcomings for this kind of hard races are revealed. Hopefully the presence of Cortes on the upcoming ones will make a difference.

Strade Bianche (1.HC) Toscana, 199.8 kms
Edoardo used the first strade climb to bridge to the breakaway. The trio he joined consisted of Marcel Wyss, Dalivier Ospina and a struggling Luca Barla. As seen in the background, Kirill Pozdnyakov was left behind early. Barla was the next to lose contact. A camera man captured this amazing shot on the Montepulciano climb halfway. Gap at 3'45" with 80 km to go. Inside the last 40, the other two escapees finally started to cooperate. As the first Montalcino ascent was up next, the advantage dropped to 2'20". The climb itself was too tough for Wyss and soon afterwards Ospina had to let go as well. Dust, bikes and cars made it hard to spot the pack, but the race radio put them at 55". A Sagan acceleration was mentioned too. The Slovak couldn't break away, but he did end up inside an elite group. Sole leader Edoardo kept 45" as Ruben and Eder sat in the third group. Edoardo was caught after which Ghilardi accelerated on the penultimate climb. The elite group of six did stay together. All six names: D. Ghilardi alongside W. Poels, P. Sagan, M. Kwiatkowski, J. Arredondo, T.J. Slagter. Ahead of the last climb, Petr Vakoc joined the fun. The road was so steep all riders kept their kick for the ultimate 400m of the road to Montalcino. Wout Poels timing was perfect as he secured Italy's main HC classic. Our riders paid for their efforts on the road and concluded outside the top 10.
