I was a bit shocked to see PCM18 sold less than 20k copies according to steam spy, while PCM17 was quite low already with around 100k.

Does Cyanide care about it? Will they realize they need bigger changes to the game to keep selling it each year at full price?

I mean, the last (and only one) I played was 2009 or 2010 and since that, the UI and the action graphics changed, but the game is essentially the same. I'd kick myself if I had bought any of the other ones in between...

Opinions?

It'll probably be a spiral of death.

Less copies sold -> less money to develop the game -> less changes -> less copies sold

Maybe, but it can't only be that. If PCM17 sold 100k copies at 40$ - that's 4 million.

How much can it cost to assign 10 developers to rehaul / extend the management part of the game for like 6 months? It's not that complicated and I'm sure you don't need more than that.

If you calculate like 100k $ per year per average developer, that would be 600k and they'd still make a nice profit.

I rather get the feeling that the code is so "spaghettified" (obstructed) by now through all these years of changing people working on it, that it must be incredibly hard to touch it at all.

I work as a developer for industry/production software and as a general rule of thumb, you can say a software project isn't maintainable / extendable anymore after around 10 years, so that's usually when customers order a completely new solution.

Maybe it's time for them to start working on a completely new PCM?

I buy the new edition every year, so i will allways be a customer.

However, i would like to see cyandie be bought by somebody and the game given a boost.

This. For big changes you would need to code it completly new. This might not be possible in a single year. Since it takes long, it will cost more. And then there is the risk, that it won't work out as hoped, which is obviously a big financial risk.

I probably would rather have a bad cycling manager, than nothing. I kinda hope they create a new PCM, but since its such a niche product, I doubt it.

Not sure about this, though. If less and less people buy it every year, it will just end to exist at some point. If you code it new and can sell it again with 100k-200k copies per year for a couple of years again, I don't see that much of a risk here. You can develop quite a while for 4-8m $ with a small team of 10-15 developers.

Yea. If everything works out as you say, there won't be a problem. I am sure they are already for quite some time consider this.

Btw ever heard of the airport in Berlin, that should have opened in 2012? Pfft Planning is the one side. The risk of failure is the other.

I also do not think it will stop to exist. PCM has always sold in that period. Since 2014 no PCM has sold more than 100k copies following steam spy. Once the 2018 edition is on sale it will raise as well a little bit. It will settle somewhere between 50 and 100k as well.

You guys calculate wrongly....

40€ * 100k copies = 4 million € yes, but there's more to it. They have to pay for licences, which could be up to a few hundred thousand euros, they develop, they publish, they advertise. Also it is said, that Steam keeps 30% as well. In the end, the profit they make isn't that big.

BigBen bought Cyanide so BigBen will now decide whether it gets released next year. Nothing is sure because Focus still has the licenses. Cyanide wants to negotiate but nothing's public about that yet.

Paul, the total costs of creating PCM is around 1.5 million € according to public sources (pre 2014 source)

How expensive can cycling licenses be, though? I mean it's a sport where riders win 2.000€ for race wins, it's not football. As they self-publish the game, they won't have many extra costs for doing so, as they are running their publishing department anyway. Advertising, okay - but is there a lot of advertising going on nowadays for games? Usually twitch/youtube/gaming magazines do that for them for free, so there isn't much advertising necessary.

Yes, development isn't the only costs, but compared to the development costs, I'd bet the rest is neglectable.

True, but I'm not sure steam is the only distribution PCM uses as well?
