A very promising young Dane in fact, could be the next big thing for the high mountains. Smile

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/qEPZsiE.png
Home rider Batista Lima set his sights on the first mountain jersey but he could not keep up with the other two. Vegard Breen picked up the jersey.
i.imgur.com/r4C1Zbt.png
None of them three stood a real chance for today's stage. Once again our sprint train for Carlos Barbero appeared really strong at the beginning.
i.imgur.com/B6b8CYH.png
Lotto-Soudal's experience was the decisive factor, as we could no longer keep up on the false flat in Albufeira. Neither could most other sprinters.
i.imgur.com/DDRb4V8.png
Jasper Stuyven won far ahead of teammate Edward Theuns. Top finisher for us on today's stage was Carlos Barbero, who sprinted to a solid 5th.

Stage 2/6, 140.9 kms
i.imgur.com/7iMUeC2.png

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/e6hwvWA.png
An initial 10-man break was too big for the pack's liking. After the second KoM sprint the trio of Alex Cataford, Eduard Prades, David Bartl took off.
i.imgur.com/HaNMpwc.png
Their time in front came to an end far from the finish line. While gaining ground on the right-hand side, we got boxed in by Bahrain and Movistar.
i.imgur.com/TQ4eQh2.png
By the time there was space to pass, Katusha had virtually brought home the bacon. Andrea Guardini had another man in front of him with the gap between him, the other sprinters and Martínez already being significant.
i.imgur.com/7iBcoq7.png
Guardini's early celebration was the only thing which allowed the others to get somewhat closer. A tad further back, J.S. Molano sprinted to 8th.

Stage 2/5, 196.5 kms
i.imgur.com/8H3U0Yp.png

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/W30Zl1l.png
Three riders got into the break of the day but the understanding was less than satisfactory. Jauregui & Lechuga dropped Plarre with still 100 to go.
i.imgur.com/Vxgm5eP.png
Jauregui lost contact too, after which Lechuga was joined by Valinho. The two did not last much longer, as Team Sky kept the pace extremely high.
i.imgur.com/4fxkedz.png
The peloton was down to 50 riders after the first two labeled climbs. Not having brought the best climbers here, only Vandenborre had managed to keep up with the thinned group. So had overall leader Jasper Stuyven.
i.imgur.com/FzmxzRy.png
We were down to 25 when Jan Hirt attacked ahead of the final climb. Léo Vincent and Hugh Carthy immediately went after Hirt, and Vandenborre kept riding at the front of the GC group. Final difficulty was Alto da Foia.
i.imgur.com/z29XUdo.png
Jan Hirt would try a second time after being pulled back. Koen Bouwman went with him, while Sky and Vandenborre had no immediate reaction.
i.imgur.com/CQa2m0M.png
Both attackers fell back when the pace of the GC group went up. Thomas De Gendt, Quick-Step's second option, showed good legs by riding away from everyone else. Vandenborre clung onto the back of chasing group.
i.imgur.com/EKhGCFx.png
An impressively strong De Gendt put 50" into Hugh Carthy, who held off an unknown Emirati for 2nd place. Great way for the Belgian breakaway specialist to bounce back after a 2019 season without one single victory.
i.imgur.com/wPdGVyH.png
Sam got a second breath in the last hectometers, which made him finish in 5th place. The white jersey for the best young rider is also his for now.

Really solid start at both race indeed. Sam should be capable of moving up with a strong TT. Smile

Stage 3/6, 142.1 kms
i.imgur.com/r8VeTEW.png

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/6XK79Mg.png
Palmero made up a gap of 2 minutes to join the break of the day. With him in front sat mountain jersey contender Tonelli, Matysiak & Shevchuk.
i.imgur.com/kDiguMP.png
Francesc had to let go of Tonelli on the first climb, Cabrezo des Andres.
i.imgur.com/2xii1Sa.png
The Venezuelan fought back, but Tonelli also won the second KoM sprint.
i.imgur.com/706CFgJ.png
Palmero got back to Tonelli ahead of the brutal .HC Cerro de las Lomas. He kept up with the Italian until two kilometers from the top. Francesc had to let go on the steep section at 23.9%. A thinned pack sat at 3'15".
i.imgur.com/UNqhru2.png
Being a great descender, Palmero came back once more. With 20 km to the line, a pacing elite GC group caught sight of the remaining escapees.
i.imgur.com/f3WXGzZ.png
Kudus and Kelderman got away from the others once the breakaway was over. Guerreiro and I. Izagirre sat inside the chasing group, 25" down.
i.imgur.com/9EZerUT.png
The chasers only lost more time on the final ramp, where Kudus sprinted faster than Kelderman. The latter does make the move into the GC lead.

Andalucia: Lost a slot in GC to Wilco Kelderman, but two inside top four is great.
The time differences are very small – an exciting race.

Algarve: Nice TT, (too short though Wink ) but enough to move up and take time on anyone important.

Too short unfortunately, and also the wrong rider we needed to gain time on. Will be hard to make this up with only one somewhat hard stage left.

Meanwhile things look good in Andalucia as well, despite Ruben's poor form at the moment. The next mountain stage could be a little too much for his at his current form though.

Will be damn hard to make this up indeed. Yet a second overall this early is certainly a great result. Smile

Story of the Day

Six escapees hit the final bump with an advantage of 1'15". Among them multiple Latvian champion Aleksejs Saramotins was the best-known face.
i.imgur.com/FxIV4s5.png
Even though four of them dropped the others, the pack reduced the lead to 30". Katusha once again appeared strong the sprint train for Guardini.
i.imgur.com/Jenucvo.png
From those four, Antonino Parrinello attacked. Under the red kite his gap amounted to 25". However the Italian looked to be close to hitting a wall.
i.imgur.com/g8GwmDS.png
Parrinello's came 500m from the finish. Wouter Wippert flew by, with the remaining sprinters coming at a safe distance. We're remaining invisible.

Wippert secured his second triumph of the season. We were happy to see Ion Izagirre, Ruben Guerreiro without losing any seconds for the GC.

Stage 4/5, 190.7 kms
i.imgur.com/j71C3Q9.png

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/zZDQAKO.png
With just over 15 kms to go, three riders remained out front: Ribeiro, Le Boulch and our Nélson Oliveira. The peloton sat only 45 seconds down.
i.imgur.com/ZCX9qwr.png
Le Boulch left the other two behind with about 10km to the finish line. Le Boulch's advantage shrunk to only 20" due to the sprinter teams pacing.
i.imgur.com/vEUMFY0.png
With Le Boulch reeled in, Terpstra and Spengler tried a late acceleration. Mitchelton-Scott made sure they could not break clear & made a gap too.
i.imgur.com/0U0Dc6y.png
While we made the top 10 with two riders, Davide Cimolai sprinted to his first win of the season. Sam Vandenborre remains to sit in 2nd overall.
