Abu Dhabi Tour (2.HC) Stage 1/4, 174.9 kms
The merge of two attacking duos resulted in the presence of four men in the BOTD. Andrea Pasqualon, Rob Ruijgh, Josh Berry, Higinio Fernández reached last intermediate sprint with their lead at 4'16", with 75 km left. It took long for the sprint trains to take the stage. With some 2200 m to go, Pasqualon had created a nice gap without any breakaway rider close. In the meantime, our train was fighting those of Israel Cycling Academy and Bahrain-Merida. Ours remained on par with the other two quite well. Pasqualon made it through the last corner, in danger of collapsing totally however. Bouwman, Bonifazio, Ruffoni were close, and so was Barbero! Ruffoni kept up his effort to finish ahead of Bonifazio and his own leader Mareczko. Carlos ran out of steam too early, and concluded in 8th place. Not bad, just a tiny bit more legs and could have been a 3th or 4th place.

Solid result for a flat sprint indeed. Hopefully we'll be able to handle them a little more smoothly someday.

Abu Dhabi Tour (2.HC) Stage 2/4, 129 kms
The pack let go of two men early on: Sven Reutter and Nicola Boem. The latter won the last intermediate sprint, at which point the duo had 1' left. Boem was the stronger one, and he got rid of Reutter on a bridge 19 kms from the finish. His advantage didn't seem promising at all, down to 40". The lone survivor lasted until the 10-to-go banner. Our train struggled to get to the front, while Movistar, Israel Cycling Academy were impressive. The ultimate bump made things even more difficult, while Israel Cycling Academy seemingly had it all sewed up. Still 2 riders ahead of Mareczko. Onto the last straight, Mareczko had been surprised by three others. The question was if he would be able to make that up, with only 300 m to go. The Polish-born Italian could not. The stage win went to Wouter Wippert, who narrowly beat Mark Cavendish for his first victory of the season. As we failed to make the stage top 10, Ruffoni remains in the leader jersey. Pan flat stages will never be our cup of tea I guess. Let's try to strike on terrain that suits us better.

Abu Dhabi Tour (2.HC) Stage 3/4, 142.8 kms
Israel Cycling Academy and Team Sky made sure the 7-man break of the day was caught way earlier than the final climb. Big bunch with 40 to go. Fabio Aru put off his first acceleration until the final 5 km of Jebel Hafeet. White jersey holder Van der Poel was the only one to stay on Fabio Aru's wheel. Then already, Chávarri & Izagirre didn't seem to have the legs. Van der Poel had to let go of Aru on a steeper section 3 km from the top. At that moment, our first riders sat already 1'10" down on the Sardinian. At no point did Van der Poel really cave in, but he could not threaten Aru either. The Italian won while Van der Poel had to leave second to Benoot. Eder, Ion concluded in the E4, with Rubén Fernández. The three lost 2'. Abu Dhabi Tour (2.HC) Stage 4/4, 110 kms
2020 Abu Dhabi Tour: conclusion The BOTD on the Yas Marina circuit included our Federico Zurlo. Among his companions were Fabio Sabatini, Francesco Gavazzi & Marco Coledan. When the group of ten hit the last 3 kilometers with a gap of 55", hopes of a stage win grew. Being one of the stronger sprinters, Zurlo chose the wheel of Fabio Sabatini, recently signed by a newly founded Uzbek team. Sabatini overplayed his hand when he kept setting the pace himself. The group slowed down as some started the sprint from behind Zurlo's back. Federico's sprint sufficed to get past all of his fellow escapees. When he hit the wall as well, the sprinters from the bunch suddenly turned out to have come very close. Niccolo Bonifazio appeared just around the corner. The ultimate hundreds of meters seemed to last for ages, but Fede held on. He got himself his maiden pro win at the age of 25. Bonifazio's effort to come in second earned him a last-minute move into the points jersey. Ion Izagirre, Eder Chávarri concluded in GC 6th and 7th respectively. Perfect way to conclude our time here despite a slightly disappointing performance in the queen stage.

GP Costa degle Etruschi (1.1)
Toscana, 123.4 kms
Local teams usually make sure to get a guy in the breakaway in this kind of races. Today, they failed to do so. Today's front trio consisted of David de la Cruz, Nello De Battisti, Amaury Van Bijlen, representing WT teams. De Battisti lost contact on a false flat sector with 13 left; 30" for the rest. Windhorn, Verona and Puccio joined the leading duo 8km from the finish. None of the others could follow the pace of Roy Windhorn. With less than two kilometers to go, Bahrain - Merida limited his advantage to only 18". Our sprint preparation didn't go as planned, with our train sitting way too far back while Roy Windhorn was still fighting for each and every second. Windhorn was passed in the final kilometer, after which the win went to youngster Emilien Cohen. Manuel had to settle for a disappointing 10th. Vuelta a Murcia (1.1)
Murcia, 167.9 kms
The pack let go of above six early on. Amongst them Montaguti and Ivan Garcia Cortina. The advantage was 2'30" at the foot of the longest climb. MÃnguez and Guldhammer left the others, of whom DÃaz was the last to be dropped, behind on the first section of the long climb, Alto de Espuña. Le Lavandier attacked from the pack approaching the highest point of the day, the summit of Alto del Collado Bermejo. Christian Mager responded. Theattack had come too close to the top to create a big enough gap. On the descent, they were reeled in along with the two remaining escapees. Klever tried an attack ahead of the last climb, but the other teams had no intention of giving him space. Sam was our man for the uphill finish. A camera at the end of the famous tunnel on Alto del Castillo showed us a worrisome image. Sam sat too far back, while being near the red kite. In front, several Frenchmen became the main challengers for the win. In the end Chevrier beat Elissonde and Le Lavandier for the win. No reason to worry for Vandenborre but he does have some form to gain ahead of the Volta ao Algarve, his next race. Klever, stage winner at la Vuelta last year, left the race with a fractured vertebra. Surely not the best of days.
