World Championships

The World Championships were once again held in Doha this year. As a result, the flat course is a sprinter's paradise and I was selected only for the ITT.

Individual Time Trial

Incredibly, Dumoulin had decided not to ride the Worlds at all, so despite there being four riders representing Netherlands in the ITT, there was no top favourite.

I had a very good run on a course which wasn't the best suited for me. I like ITTs with some elevation as it plays into my climbing strength. I set the fastest time when I crossed the line but there were faster men coming up later.

As it would turn out, my time was beaten by eight riders, which meant I finished 9th. My teammate Palik won the Gold for Poland!

My prep race for Il Lombardia. I was deemed to be top favourite for this one and I wanted to make a mark. I had never felt this good at this time of the year, even considering the year I won Il Lombardia!

Three riders formed the break of the day. Ulissi crashed early for us, but he recovered. The team started pacing the pack with 50 km to go. The break was caught with 20 km to go. I waited for someone to launch the first attack, feeling rather confident that I could chase it down. I missed the decisive moment as I was boxed in behind seven or eight riders at the front. My attack was too late. I caught and passed a couple of riders but only managed 6th, in what a disappointing result.

Il Lombardia

After the disappointment of Tre Valli Varesine, I was determined to improve in my last race of the season. I have had arguably my best season till, winning La Fleche Wallone and the Vuelta. I was hoping to improve on it.

We had a strong line-up for the race, with Formolo, Barguil and Van Garderen, all starting alongside me. Not surprisingly, Formolo was our team's designated leader, my continuing contract dispute not helping my cause for leadership responsibilities. I didn't mind really, as this meant the pressure was off me to perform.

Four riders formed the day's break. Duteil crashed early but recovered. The team started pacing at the front. Adam Yates attacked on the first climb, with Van Garderen in tow. They were caught by the pack. They didn't survive for long. Jungels and Formole launched the next dual attack. One of the breakaway was caught. I was a part of a six rider group that went away from the peloton at the top of the climb, and had Barguil for company. We caught Formolo soon after. Yates and Jungels now had a 48 second lead. We were caught by the peloton at the bottom of the descent. The leading duo had doubled their lead! Barguil took up the chasing duties, splitting the pack to just 35 riders left in the peloton now. Barguil's massive effort reeled in Yates and Jungels on the second climb. Barguil attacked himself. A group of four riders were on his tail, but couldn't catch him. I was in the third group of six riders. At the base of the final climb, Barguil's lead was up to nearly 90 seconds. I was in the second group with just Yates and Jungels. The gap decreased slightly as we climbed, but Barguil still had more than a minute's lead with 3 km left. Barguil took it easy in the final kilometers and still won by a comfortable margin. I was too tired to sprint and had to settle for 4th place. Formolo finished 9th in the group behind mine.

This was my best performance in this race since I won it in 2018. It's taken five years, but I've finally got close to challenging for the win again. I was delighted win Barguil's win in all honesty, because he's been a constant presence at my side through most of my GT aspirations with this team. This was easily his best result with Duvel/Bonsucro. The question is whether this is the last time we'll ride together as teammates for the time being?...

Barguil has signed an extension with Bonsucro. So the only way we ride together is if I sign too...

Edit: Actually signed with Gatorade which I missed earlier. They did not offer me a contract.

Many congratulations on that second GT win! Hopefully the contract issue will be resolved soon, with either a reconciliation or a move to a 'warmer' team.

'Paradise' Lost

All good things come to an end! After a couple of months of uncertainty, it is finalized today, with certainty, that I wouldn't be riding in Bonsucro's colours next season. Too much water has flown under the bridge and the differences in the expectations for both parties were not reconcilable anymore.

I did sit down with the team management for a final round of discussions the day after Il Lombardia. The meeting didn't look to be heading towards a positive outcome from the first few exchanges itself. The team were sticking to their stance of having Formolo riding two GTs for them as leader, including the Tour, while I would ride the other as the leader, albeit with a full mountain line-up in support. I didn't want to start concentrating on just a single GT at this stage of my career. It was too early to start conserving energy. I can't say I didn't see this coming. The signing of Formolo after the sponsor changed from Duvel was an indication about the long-term plans. I felt I had done enough this season to prove them wrong.

The management did not want to meet my wage demands either, which I felt were fair. They were offering me less than what other teams were willing to offer; off course there has been contact from elsewhere! They felt that I was their second leader in the team and their offer was befitting that.

Two strikes against my terms meant I was out. It wasn't easy leaving the team, with its setup and staff, after three years. My exploits at Lotto had made people take notice but Duvel/Bonsucro has made me a star. But a star must continue on it's set journey and that journey now takes me away from this familiarity...

It's a sad thing obviously, but it also opens new opportunities. Maybe another team recognizes the potential you offer in a better manner, which can take you on a way you may ride to the ultimate top: Beating Formolo to win Le Tour? I'm excited to follow your next step!

Paradise Regained

Having decided to leave Bonsucro and it's familiarity behind, it was time to accompany my agent and sit down with the other teams to discuss where I could possibly ride next season. There were offers, as I'd already mentioned. However, given how late it was in the season, it there weren't many teams still looking for GT leaders. There were two which we narrowed down to.

Fly Emirates came in with a very good offer, but they have the likes of Adam Yates and Miguel Angel Lopez in their ranks. I was worried that this would likely turn out to be a similar situation to what I was walking away from Bonsucro.

The other offer came in from Continental, who had the likes of Duteil, Danny Van Poppel and Mohoric in their ranks. Their strength is not as strong as Emirates, and their offer was slightly lower than the former, but they were offering me exactly what I was after, outright leadership in two Grand Tours and a mountain support train to help me reach my goals.

There was a catch though. Continental would not be continuing as the team's sponsor for the coming season. The new sponsor had a new recruitment team who would be finalizing the deal with me. I'm not very comfortable in these situations as it is, and prefer my client to do my talking for me, but there was no getting away from this one. The team's new Head of Recruitment, who would also be my future Team Manager, was a guy named Kurt Owens, popularly known only by initials. He is reknowned for being a hard task-master, and an ace negotiator. Good thing I wasn't coming off the back of a bad season!
