So what's this new European League then?
England have got Spain & Croatia but I don't really understand how it all works.

The BBC have a couple of explainer articles on it.
Tlr it's replacing the current Euro's qualification system. It will run in non-championship years. Group winners get automatic qualification to Euro's. Other high ranking teams go into a playoff system for the remaining places.
Designed to add more interest to qualification, and give some smaller nations a better chance.

nonono. Old qualification still exists for 20 spots. The remaining four spots will be decided in playoffs filled with the 16 group winners of this (If the group winner already qualified through the classic way, the runner-up gets selected, or further down the list in case they're already in too).

Croatia hopes it has finally found a team to better 1998 heroes
Croatia's first World Cup semi-final for two decades has revived the memories of the country's football highpoint and raised hopes that Luka Modric's side can go one better than their legendary predecessors.
After a dramatic win on penalties against Russia, Croatia will play England on Wednesday in front of 80,000 people in Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium for a place in the World Cup final.
In 1998, Croatia, which had emerged from a bitter independence war only three years earlier, made its debut at a World Cup finals.
With a team featuring Davor Suker, Zvonimir Boban and Robert Prosinecki wearing blues shirts with a distinctive red and white chequerboard pattern, they beat World Cup giants Germany 3-0 in the quarter-finals in France, sparking delirium at home.
Although Croatia went on to suffer an agonising 2-1 defeat to host nation France in the semi-finals, they beat the Netherlands 2-1 in the third-place playoff.
Nicknamed "the Fiery Ones", that team has stood as an example to their successors ever since.

So Messi has informed Barca that he wants to activate a clause in his contract that lets him unilaterally terminate the deal, effectively making him a free agent. Problem is, the clause officially ended on June 30th, the usual end of the season. Messi argues that the "end of the season" part is what matters, and that the clause should thus still be active. Barca, obviously, objects to that.
This could be the beginning of a very ugly legal dispute. It could also just be leverage for Messi to get Bartomeu out of office right now. But whether it be that, or actually trying to leave Barca without a transfer fee, this looks like a very poor move by Messi, at least from a fan perspective. This should have been resolved in a more respectful manner, imo.

Unfortunately the football world has lost Diego Armando Maradona with the cause of death being cardiac arrest.

Hannes Thor Halldorsson. You might know him from the cool Iceland national team and for denying Lionel Messi from the penalty spot. But he also made his directing debut at the Locarno Film Festival this year with his movie "Cop Secret".

Absolutely amazing to say I just watched the first ever win by New Zealand at a senior Football World Cup and on home soil as well. Such a nervous finish but incredible stuff Surely our country's greatest footballing moment - record crowd for a football match in NZ as well.
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

I watched the match, too, and was really rooting for New Zealand! You could see what it meant to them after the final whistle. In that group, the knockout stages now seem well within reach, I hope they get there. Fun match, too, looking forward to the rest of the tournament!

Guess I need to carve out some time this afternoon to watch the NZL-NOR game. Assumed Norway would just walk it 3-0 or something. But i'm down to spend 90mins enjoying NZL making history!
Meanwhile i'm enjoying AUS-IRL. The girls in green are fully stuck in and working hard to unsettle the Aussies. Atmosphere feels a bit flat however, like the ghost of Kerr is haunting the players and the fans alike. Need a goal to really spark this one to life as a 0-0 draw wouldn't really be good for anyone.
