Transfers Update

Since the start of transfers we've seen a flurry of activity at Ayubowan! HQ. Firstly, a number of riders have left - Thibaut Pinot, Cyril Gautier, Ian Bibby and Chris Opie - while Asela Sisira and Nidush Nirantha Fernando have gone out on loan. More outgoings are expected in the coming days as well.

We have made a number of signings however. In have come 6 Sri Lankans - Kashyapa Siriwardena, Krishan Madushanka, Sajith Hasantha, Gihan Pushpakumara, Darshana Prasad and Ashen Tharuka - who we hope will prove to be worthy of the step up from the domestic scene.

We've also managed to sign some non-Sri Lankans - 2 leaders and 2 talents, to be precise. In comes Yonathan Monsalve for 2 million to lead us in the Mountains, and Jerome Baugnies comes from the free agency for 525,000 to lead us on the Cobbles.
Anthony Turgis will be a future superstar on the hills, and Salem Kemboi will soon become an extremely powerful sprinter - with wages of 210,000 and 75,000 respectively.

Attached below are their current stats, and also their maxed ones - to show just how bright our future now is!

Ayubowan! 2017 Team Presentation

i.imgur.com/BkGJ2g9.jpg

This transfer season has once again seen many changes to our squad. While all of the Sri Lankan riders from last season have either remained with us or been loaned out, of the international riders only 5 of the 10 remain - Thibaut Pinot, Cyril Gautier, Ian Bibby, Christophe Laporte and Chris Opie have all departed to pastures new. Adam Yates and Hugh Carthy have both improved thanks to gains in experience though, while Adrien Petit and Tony Gallopin have trained hard in the offseason. And Jonathan Bellis will finally make his PT bow, after many seasons of consistently looking strong in the PCT.

We have however made some exciting signings to replace them. Yonathan Monsalve is a superb stage racer and far more well rounded than Pinot, while Jay McCarthy is a younger and more physically gifted version of Gautier. Jerome Baugnies has come in to provide us with a proper leader on cobbles for the first time in the history of the team, while two great young talents have come on board in Kenyan sprinter Salem Kemboi and French puncheur Anthony Turgis. And a late addition came in Kevin Predatsch on loan from Wiesenhof - Andritz. A pure TTer, he'll be useful from time to time to help our GC contenders in Team Time Trials.

Of the 11 Sri Lankans we owned our loaned out last season, all have remained with the squad - with the exceptions of Asela Sisira and Nidush Nirantha Fernando who have been loaned out to try and ride for themselves in the CT. We've also brought in 5 talented Sri Lankans to add to the group - Gihan Pushpakumara (a puncheur who can sprint), Ashen Tharuka (a versatile sprinter), Kashyapa Siriwardena (a stage racer), Darshana Prasad (a future top leadout man) and Krishan Madushanka (a cobbler with a nice kick). And our old friend Sachin Dulanjana has completed a permanent move, which delights us greatly.

Our team remains quite young, with an average age of below 25 and only 8 riders having completed their development. That presents challenges, and we expect a long hard fight to remain in the PT this season. But after the miracle that was our promotion season, we truly believe that anything is possible and that the sky is the limit. Below is a snapshot of what all of our talents will look like when they complete their development - a sight we're sure many managers will envy.

Some nice riders, you lack the real top leader that can assure points every time he races, but have a good amount of riders that can score points. Will be really interesting to see my ex-rider Monsalve and how he will do for you. Both him, McCarthy and Yates will be really nice riders when/if you get them some training in future seasons.

I really like Turgis as a talent as well (I did after all bid on him at one time). Really nice backup stats and will be one of the top puncheurs when he get some training.

Unfortunately that was always going to be the case after Bakelants, Ponzi and Taaramae became too expensive for me, I lost out on EBH and SotD couldn't be persuaded to sell Spilak for 4 million Pfft

Depth got me promoted though, so I'm happy to stand by it once again. Training is definitely in the future of all of those mentioned, but for this season wasn't quite possible - or better alternatives could be found.

At the start of transfers I promised myself I would get Turgis so was delighted that happened, albeit at a higher price than I anticipated. Wanted Latour as well, but the stubbornness of LLS and me being unable to sell Carthy scuppered any chances of signing him.

Looking ahead to 2018

upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c7/Sigiriya.jpg

One month remains in the 2017 season and - as is typical at this time of year - rumblings have been heard emanating from inside the management of Ayubowan! about the future of the team. The first matter being discussed is whether the team will in fact continue, with team owner jph seemingly disengaged for almost half of the season. However, assurances have been made that there are no plans for the team to close as it currently stands, with sources close to the camp confirming that the earlier personal circumstances limiting the involvement of the veteran owner have resolved themselves.

But having one issue resolved does not necessarily mean all is well and good with the inner workings of the Sri Lankan team. The continued lack of success by Sri Lankan riders - Gihan Pushpakumara's 6th place at Liege - Bastogne - Liege as the sole exception - has lead the consortium of sponsors behind the team to consider reining in their investment. That, combined with the strong likelihood of a return to the PCT next season means that while the sponsorship of the team will remain unchanged, plans have been made for structural changes to the roster. Firstly, the number of Sri Lankan riders may be cut if finances require it - and secondly, some of the existing big names on the roster may find themselves replaced with younger, and therefore cheaper, talent. Don't just take out word for it though - see this leaked document below!

Good to hear the election has calmed down, hopefully you’ve come out a winner there Wink

Also good to hear you’ll be back for this coming season, it’s great to see the commitment to the Sri Lankan cause remaining with the sponsor renewal. As a team with quite a bit of competition for domestic riders (Poland), it’s nice to see you dragging a country up singlehandedly.

Should we hold onto our promotion spot, we’ll likely be in touch about a couple of those potential departures (you really need to plug the leak if it’s coming out in team press releases Pfft)

Yates will be a great rider for you, no surprise he is unlikely to leave.

McCarthy though. A pity he had to be overpaid Pfft you should still expect some rumors surrounding his name in the offseason Grin

Yep - incredibly stressful few weeks but luckily all turned out for the best Wink

I imagine there's a good chance you'll be promoting to meet us next season in the PCT, so expect we'll be talking during transfers, whenever that may be. As for the leak, well let's just say I don't run a particularly tight ship Pfft

Yates will hopefully get to be trained - he'll only be 26 next season, so it'd be a solid investment. Thought originally that if I got him to 81MO he'd be a consistent top 10 GT finisher, then he went and finished 7th in the Tour with 79MO, so aim now is probably to turn him into a rider who can podium GTs.

Blame Shonak and dev for that, overpaying Bakelants and Ponzi and leaving me with no other alternative Pfft I expect to hear the rumblings as ever, it's not impossible he could leave but the deal would have to be exceptional - and there's few better puncheurs at PCT level.

Quite an exciting group of talent jph, and most of them still have a lot of room for improvement. Its going to be difficult to max out all of the level 4 riders this year though, I wonder how you plan to do that.

In truth, the short answer is I don't have a clue Pfft

Hopefully I'll be able to loan four of them out, leaving me with 6 to try and max out. A GT wildcard combined with PTHC and HC races would be the ideal solution, but obviously that's not a given. The hardest one to max would likely be Carthy due to having more limited RDs, but then he may leave anyway - which would make life easier, but of course relies on an adequate replacement being found.
