The first series of rides came in with times between 3’44” and 3’54” Rick Zabel (BMC) sitting the longest period in the hot-seat.

Then as the 2nd riders starting for Sky the first of the Top 10 favorites Danny Van Poppel, cut 5 seconds with 3’39” now the riders to beat.

i.imgur.com/X8VIYnn.jpg

The next Top 10 favorite is Fabio Felline (Trek), he come in at 3’38” new best time.

i.imgur.com/SczMLGC.jpg

Then the first podium favorite Manuel Quinziato (BMC), not faster, 3’40”

Two more Top 10 favorite Michael Hepburn (Orica) and Gaëtan Bille (Wanty) both 3’42”

Then another Top 10 favorite Bob Jungels (Etixx) he is credited with new best, in the same time as Felline. Later this is adjusted and in the official result Felline beat Jungels.

i.imgur.com/rbLDtN5.jpg

Then is in Top favorite Lars Boom, cutting one second of the time with new best 3’36”

i.imgur.com/jUFuPvv.jpg

Top 10 favorite Gianni Meersman (Quick Step), 3’38”

Then we get the first surprise time, not considered a favorite Giacomo Nizzolo (Trek) get in 2nd best in the same time as Lars Boom, later adjusted to +1 but still 2nd best at this point.

Then it is Top favorite Taylor Phinney getting in with new best in same time as Lars Boom, also later adjusted to Lars Boom faster than Taylor Phinney.

The last rider to start is Vincenzo Nibali, and a bit unexpected he beat teammate Lars Boom with a second, taking the stage win.

A good time trial result Smile

Forever the Best
Nice win in Luxembourg. Also Nibali rode like a champion in that Giro, without the crash in Netherlands he would have comfortably won.

It is partly clouded with strong winds up to 60 km/h

The fight to get in the breakaway is fierce, and the brutal sidewind put a lot of pressure on the riders, trying to keep up with the pace in the peloton, stretched to the breaking point.

i.imgur.com/J2uGBQv.jpg

The fight for possition as soon as the small hilly climbs starts, ends in a huge accident taking 22 riders down, a lot of good sprinter on the ground we can spot Van Poppel, Sabatini, Cort, Felline, Theuns, Nizzolo, Dehaes, Haller, Swift, and Porsev. Also Simon Yates was down and race favorite Pieter Serry (Quick Step) is out of the race.

i.imgur.com/ctRBzRw.jpg

The peloton slows down a bit and the crashed rider get back, stage favorite Giacomo Nizzolo has some serious brusings and Simon Yates seems to be even worse of.

A break get away, it is Frederik Ludvigsson (Giant), Marcel Sieberg (Lotto) and Jérôme Cousin (Cofidis).
Cousin takes the KoM at Rue de Savelborn.

i.imgur.com/Q93lz1v.jpg

When the breakaway start the climb to Côte de Bourscheid they have 4’59”, again Cousin takes the KoM. About 80 km to the line.

Just before the peloton starts the climb, another crash and Giacomo Nizzolo is down for the 2nd time.

i.imgur.com/eamYYIQ.jpg

Cousin , the last rider from the breakaway gets caught with some 5km to the line, Astana is leading on the downhill, race leader Nibali in front.

i.imgur.com/Qe40M6W.jpg

But as he have seen to many times Astanas trains do not work, and only Nibali follows the two Quick Step riders when they opens the sprint.

Gianni Meersman wins the stage in front of Danny Van Poppel and Moreno Hofland

i.imgur.com/63lSxLB.jpg

Evaluation:

Overall:

This was the 1st stage win by the 30 years old Belgian Gianni Meersman, his last win was Handzame Classic20.03.2015.

The many sprinters down in crashes provided for an unusual top ten, with riders like Adam Yates and Vincenzo Nibali

Most disappointed must be Astana, they had no riders down but top favorite Guardini was far from a podium.

Astana:

To reflect the mood in the Astana camp, we can listen to the remark from Andrea Guardini to an Italian journalist after he crossed the line (losely translated from Italian): “When your fucking train can’t hold a fucking line its fucking hard to be a sprinter.”

i.imgur.com/L5owygx.jpg

It is partly clouded with wind between 30-45 km/h

Pavel Brutt (Tinkoff) opens the stage with a solo attack, taking the early KoM in Cinqfontaines, a little later he is joined by Lars Boom and Pavel Kochetkov (Katusha).

The peloton is right behind them all the time, Boom takes the bonus point at the intermediate sprint, before the break is over.

i.imgur.com/X0cL6VR.jpg

Tinkoff tries again, this time with Sérgio Paulinho going on a solo adventure. He built up a lead of close to 4 minutes up to the intermediate sprint in Clervaux.

Then just before the climb to Reuler Dario Cataldo accelerates away from the pack.

i.imgur.com/wJK66dw.jpg

Sérgio Paulinho is no match for the Astana climber, flying by him on the climb to take the KoM points. Over the top they got 3’15 to the peloton.

i.imgur.com/iMIlypZ.jpg

Cataldo also takes the next KoM, when the duo starts the first lap over the small climb on the circuit, they have 2’55.

But the peloton is now very fast. It is BMC setting an extreme pace which may seem a bit strange as they do not have the obvious candidate neither for the stage nor the GC. Anyway the break is reeled in over the next two laps.

i.imgur.com/QHTaRmi.jpg

Vincenzo Nibali attacks with two hills left, but half way up the last hill he gets caught.

Bob Jungels (Quick Step) see an option, attacking as soon as Nibali is reeled in, Nibali haven’t used it all and counters.

i.imgur.com/xcMY1SC.jpg

Nibali is faster than Jungels in the downhill, and they are both building a small gap to the peloton, a final attacks from Vincenzo from 5 km is enough to get rid of Jungels.

Nibali wins in Hosingen also taking the GC, Tosh Van der Sande wins the bunch sprint for 3rd.

63 riders get the same time as Nibali

i.imgur.com/OM3ECIu.jpg

Evaluation:

Overall:

This was 9th season win from the Italian national champion.

The stage played our somewhat different from what had been expected, with only 3 of the top 10 favorites making it, and only Nibali from the top 10 favorites getting on the podium.

Hard to say which rider was the biggest surprise there was many, but as a team Lotto Soudal did great with 3 riders in top 10.

The disappointment today was Orica, top favorite Esteban Cháves 39th, with best rider Daryl Impey as 13th.

Astana:
A great result again from Vincenzo Nibali, although the time gap is very limited and it will be hard to hold the GC against the bonus seconds provided on the coming stages.
