Welcome, fellow fans of Antonio Andolini.
The second week of the Giro has really flown by. We had two stages for the sprinters, a hilly stage, three mountain stages, including a mountain time trial.
We saw our hero talk to Mark Cavendish. Maybe asking some tips to follow in the sprint?
If he did, it must've worked, as Antonio was delivered perfectly by his team mates to contest for the win in a windy mass sprint!
And Cavendish might've revealed too much, as Antonio adds another unreal victory to his counter here in Italy. This time in a straight mass sprint. Today, he couldn't have done it without his team, but he did it!
Result

The next day, he didn't come close and finished 8th.

In the next stage, Antonio went down and we were afraid he'd have to abandon for a second!
But he was back on his feet... bike, fairly soon. A few attackers tried to break away in the final downhill of a hilly stage.
Antonio chased them down and was heading towards the finish line with a small group.
As his reputation has grown immensely in this Giro, nobody wanted to take Antonio to the finish. He set the pace himself and had confidence in his sprint. Surely a 5th (!) stage win was in the making!
Was it underestimation, having done too much work during the race or the fall? We don't know, but Antonio couldn't finish it off and ended 3rd. Good for his points jersey, though.

He's exactly what Italian cycling needed.

The red is not far off! Thinking a final stage win now to a certain city is missing to complete the perfect Giro

Great to see another stage win being added to the collection The crash luckily doesn't seem to have had too much of an impact, which is obviously great news. The red jersey looks quite secure already

DiCyc - He's certainly the most impressive rider in the Giro so far, gotta say.
rogvi97 - Let's try to make this Giro perfect!
Selwink - Red Jersey is looking better and better. I think he has it if he can stay upright until Milan
Thanks guys! |

Welcome, friends.
It's been a while again since I updated this blog. As you know, I've taken a turn in my career and that makes it harder for me to do this blog regularly. But I'm certain you've been following the news or some of those cycling podcasts and blogs that are around. Did you happen to catch the interview with Rein of the fan club? I thought it was fun. They originally wanted to interview me but when they were at the hotel I was getting a massage and I couldn't be disturbed, not even for my own fan club, I'm sorry to say.
Anyway, even though I have won four stages already, yesterday's stage was the most important one for me. It was the stage to my home town, where I grew up and lived my entire life. Coming into Varese in the Red Jersey with four wins in my first Giro is already a dream, but I wanted more. I wanted to come to Varese a hero. I wanted to come as a conquerer. This is my Varese. Yesterday I wanted to own it.
Giro d'Italia - Stage 16
Pre-race
A short race, so it might be action-packed. You'd think this is one for the sprinters, but that final climb might make life hard for some of the pure sprinters. On paper this looks like the perfect profile for someone like me. I can see what happens on the final hill or I can wait for the sprint.
The Race
Despite it being a short stage, some of the top teams wanted to make it pass even faster. The pace skyrocketed with 60 km to go!
And that had its consequences. The peloton broke in pieces. I was near the front and very alert!
Coming up to that final hill, we still hadn't caught part of the breakaway. I was getting very nervous and I hear Guldhammer had broken away solo and was still over a minute ahead. There were only 9 km to go. I attacked!
I picked up a few riders from the breakaway, now only Guldhammer remained. So I had to catch him and try to win, while also keeping off the peloton. I hadn't made it myself easy, but I had no other choice!
Entering the final kilometer I was getting real worried. Still no Guldhammer. And then, suddenly, there he was! Because I was so involved with the race, I hadn't even noticed we had already entered Varese. There were many banners with my name and face on it. The people cheered so loudly I suddenly returned with all my senses. My heartbeat reacted to the applause from my friends and neighbours. I've come home!
By some miracle I recognized my mom and dad in the crowd, along with ALL my five brothers and their family. It gave me such a rush I managed to get out the saddle one final time and step on the pedals like I never done before.
Dying inside, I couldn't give up!
And then, there was the finish. And I had him. I was the first to reach my city. I did it!
I couldn't possibly describe what I felt crossing the line. I have known joy in my life, and yet this was something else. It was almost a spiritual experience, to tell you the truth.
I let out a prehistoric yell, like something a caveman would yell to his neighbour after he crushed his skull. I let the applause wash over me and I basked in it.

We celebrated. I dined with my family, I kissed my girlfriend. My father took me apart to tell me how proud he is of me. My team mates carried me on their shoulders, partly joking, through (a few meters of) Varese.
When I awoke the next morning, my emotions were spent.
Ciao

He sure is. I don't think he'll forget this Giro any time soon He's got as much wins as the entire last season here! |

Sure was. He is probably the strongest rider in the pack at the moment if he really wants to get away, nobody can stop him! although that doesn't count in the mountains
Thanks! |

Welcome, fellow fans of Antonio Andolini.
After his stage win to Varese, which we celebrated extensively, there were five stages left before Antonio's first Giro came to an end. For the first time in the Giro, it looked like Antonio had quenched his thirst. For four consecutive days, we saw little of Antonio. In stage 17 he was part of the lead-out train for Appollonio, trying to repay him for the big help during this race. In the mountains, Antonio was quiet and dropped back to place 34. Team mate Rosa slowly climbed the tables to a 10th place.
After an incredible three weeks, in which Antonio made the leap from subtop rider to absolute world class, the Giro would be coming to an end in the streets of Verona, with a flat time trial. One final day for Antonio to show his skills with a bike.
It was the perfect ending to a perfect Giro. This has been a truly historic Giro d'Italia, and Antonio has carried it like a legend of the sport. A legend in the making, but a legend nonetheless.

What a Giro for Antonio, how many stage wins did he end up with?
Another thing, Quintana absolutely shredded everyone else, 10 min to second and 30 min to tenth is absurd. |
