Look at all that Genesys/Salmon/Avanti glory! Especially the ultimate and special 2014 season, really cemented a long term love for the story and for the riders and team beyond.

Keeping that bit of love alive in the MG with Avanti at my own team. Perhaps time to try and reunite some of the riders with the old manager...

Slowly moving towards a new season?

i.imgur.com/XBJkSPR.jpg

With every new racing season comes a fresh array of team names and kits for cycling fans to familiarise themselves with. This is true at all levels of the sport, and certainly in the Australian Continental scene. And in 2017, there will be more changes to the Australian Continental scene than in recent memory.

Several of the country’s biggest Continental teams have rebranded, one has gone through an off-shore merger, and others, sadly, have disbanded altogether.

Avanti has ditched its blue and orange colours for black and blue, and IsoWhey Sports had come on board as a co-naming-sponsor. CharterMason Giant, meanwhile, had become State of Matter MAAP, the squad trading its blue, white and red ensemble for an eye-catching, mostly cyan outfit.

The Search2retain team announced in December it would merge with the Taiwanese-based Continental team Attaque Team Gusto and focus on racing in Asia.

Meanwhile, the Perth-based Navitas-Satalyst team also chose not to renew its Continental license, citing exorbitant costs and a limited return on investment. It will continue racing in the NRS as the Satalyst Verve Racing Team in 2017.

Towards the end of last year, two of Australia’s biggest Continental teams shut up shop, each citing different reasons for their decision. For African Wildlife Safaris, a team that had raced in Australia’s National Road Series (NRS) since 2012, the decision was a financial one.

For Team Budget Forklifts, it was a case of having achieved everything management set out to do, eight years after the setup first started racing in Australia.

“We’ve done the NRS and we thought in 2012 that was as good as we were ever going to get in terms of results and satisfaction,” team manager Cameron Watt told CyclingTips. "We also had a great year in 2016, even though missing out on the title. It's been a difficult decision, but Team Budget Forklifts doesn’t exist in 2017!"

vic.cycling.org.au/Portals/17/EasyDNNNews/3340/778388p3449EDNmainm2w13%20podium%20780x390.jpg
Team Budget won't exist anymore.. a sad goodbye that is..

So is the reduction in the number of teams a sign that domestic racing in Australia is on the decline? For Andrew Christie-Johnston, co-owner of Avanti IsoWhey, the answer is no, but the loss of competitive teams is certainly disappointing.

“I don’t really see it as going backwards or forwards [having fewer Continental teams] — I just think that some teams progress and some disappear,” Christie-Johnston told CyclingTips. “It’s always sad to see a few teams disappear and Budget Forklifts has been a long-standing sponsor in cycling … to lose one like that is hard to see and African Wildlife — that was a hard one as well."

Australia’s Continental scene is constantly changing as teams wrestle with the ever-present challenge of finding sponsorship money, but the 2017 season has delivered greater change than we’ve seen in recent year years. And with many questions still to be answered about the health of Australia’s domestic racing scene, the next 12 months could prove vital to the future of cycling in the region.

Yap... and more changes to come.. no good news for the NRS..

Another National Road Series (NRS) event, the men’s Battle on the Border is off the calendar for 2017, taking the total number of NRS races cancelled or postponed this year to five.

Just two weeks ago, Battle on the Border race director, Mike Crawley, was confident of holding the men’s event. Over the weekend, a few teams pulled out leaving the men's race financially unviable.

“We were at a stage where we were just going to break even this year. The tipping point was on Sunday when three teams pulled out. Then you have to ask if it’s worth shutting down a whole area, and the logistics that go with that," he said.

The news comes as a bitter blow to the NRS, with the bad news snowballing currently to make the sport less attractive, for race organisers, teams and sponsors alike: the news late last week of the cancellation of the 2017 edition of the Tour of Toowoomba. Also the Adelaide Tour as well as the Tour de Perth are not able to currently confirm that they would be running races - most likely, they will fall, too. The same may happen to the National Capital Tour.

www.ridemedia.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/TAN_9528.jpg

This begs the question of what might have been, if the promised Cycling Australia review of the NRS had been completed expeditiously when announced in June last year. Instead the process has been slow to get under way, with it taking until January to start the review. What has eventuated is the continued loss of races, with a corresponding drop in confidence of stakeholders throughout the country.

The NRS is important for fostering an environment for the development of future stars and a healthy racing culture within Australia. The question is now, how much more bad news can it sustain before sponsors and teams look elsewhere in the future.

It's indeed sad what happens/happened to the NRS since it's prime years 2014/2015.. I hope it will recover in a way, even though the real 2017 season ain't coming up with better news so far.

On the other hand, it made it easier for me to update the DB. So I can confirm that this story will go into another season soon Smile Stay tuned for more updates concerning the look of the NRS 2017 here.

EARLY SEASON 2017 - AVANTI GOING STRONG (AGAIN)

i.imgur.com/lMMnWEV.png

An overview of the most notable results in the Australian summer of cycling 2017 shows, that it's again Avanti Isowhey Sports, which has to be considered as Australia's biggest domestic cycling team. After their strongest rivals Team Budget Forklifts surprisingly folded at the end of last season, Avanti is a real force for the upcoming NRS season.

Sean Lake (arrival from the folded African Wildlife Safari team) finished 3rd in the Australian NC timetrial, adding the Oceanian TT victory in March. Avanti also grabbed 3rd in the NC road race, where up and coming Pat Lane finished very strong, just being beaten by former Budget rider and last year's NRS runner-up Jack Bobridge (who went to ride WT level this year). Veteran and former NRS-winner (2010) Pat Shaw managed to grab a stage at the beloved Bay Classics.

Avanti would continue to play it's notable part between the big guns of cycling: in a rather strong Herald Sun Tour line-up, Robbie Hucker went to finish as a respectable 7th in the final GC. The allrounder (who had a few quite years after finishing 3rd in the NRS three seasons back) has been in a great shape this early season, also taking the overall victory (and a stage) at the Tour de Taiwan.

Ben O'Connor (anther new Avanti talent) took the overall honours at the New Zealand Cycle Classic, beating teammate Mark O'Brien by a small margin after a thrilling final stage. Speaking of the final stage: the new NRS team State of Matter/MAAP (formerly Charter Mason Giant) made some first impressions with Mike Cuming taking the line honours in this final day in Masterton. Will this team be able to break Avanti's dominance in the NRS? The Australian summer of cycling definitely showed, that it's hard to beat the NRS winners of the past three seasons. Even though Pat Bevin (2016 NRS champion) left the team to ride WT for Cannondale.

Thanks. Just writing up a few news here and then. Previews on the NRS 2017 will follow soon, so you haven't missed too much yet. Will only report/play the NRS this year (due to lack of spare time), so I just summarized a few results of the most notable teams in the early season.

NRS SCHEDULE FOR 2017 RELEASED - ONLY 7 EVENTS THIS YEAR

The 2017 Subaru National Road Series returns for a 26th season and while it may not be bigger than last years series in terms of the number of race days it’s shaping up to be just as competitive as previous years and covers events around Australia.

We had the news earlier, but now it's finally confirmed: we will see signfically less NRS race days in 2017. With a few events cancelled or postponed (like Tour de Perth and the Tour of Toowoomba), the NRS will feature only seven events with 27 race days in the upcoming season. The infamous Grafton to Inverell classic moved from October to March, kicking the season off. With all other early season events cancelled, the teams will then continue the action in August, where we should see some interesting races though.

The Tour of Gippsland is back on the schedule and races like the Tour of Tasmania and National Capital Tour will feature a few news stages as well.

NRS 2017 | JML Racing's first steps

Database(s) | tsmoha's NRS DB 2016 Update
Difficulty | Extreme
Mode | Single-Race Mode

Info | The NRS story goes into it's fifth season! We will follow the timeline and move on to the 2017 campaign, while our focus will now turn to the JML Racing Team instead of the folded Team Budget! Opposing to the last seasons, we will only cover the NRS events and no further series or UCI races. It's a rather small team, so the battle against the dominating Avanti squad may well be fought by other teams.

Some may know that I started running this story with PCM12 and continued with PCM13. I'll provide some relevant links here and then.
