Hamid Mukhtari was in no way famous, but his films, art and poems was recognized in Tehran and he was able to support his family with ease, in the late 70’s.

Jaleh watched while her husband was attempting to bribe the Turkish soldiers, her six years old son Amin looked at his mother, they were both silent.

Amin was not thinking anything; he was just very hungry and tired. Jaleh mind was in confusion thoughts falling over each other:
Will we get over, will we ever get home, will by son get a good life.

The family was living about 2 years in the underground Iranian community in Istanbul, before they were able to get to Denmark where Hamid Mukhtari and his family got political asylum in early 1985.

Hamid continues his activities as a painter, and guitarist playing with different band, in the Copenhagen underground scene, connected to Freetown Christiania and Ungdomshuset

To make ends meet, Hamid is also a Taxidriver and Jaleh works as an interpreter, using her various language skills, besides Amin they get two daughters, Firuzeh (1986) and Mahin (1989), the family lives in an apartment block in Hvidover, a suburb south of Copenhagen.

The now 13 years old Amin is a dedicated student, top in his class, but in his spare time he mostly hangs around with his father, he love to be in those strange and mysterious places with many kids, dogs and colorful people.

Jaleh’s mother died without ever seeing her daughter again, her father escaped to denmark in 1989, living with the family until he passed away in 1993 only 63 years old.

Amin finished high school with a perfect exam, after a one year’s break traveling in northern Africa and the Middle East, he started at University of Copenhagen in 1995, to study Persian language, culture and history.

Amin Mukhtari met Lisbeth Ryborg, that same summer. They quickty fell in love and soon got a rented apartment at Vesterbro, traditionaly the Red Light District of Copenhagne, but lately transforming into a trendier part of town.

Lisbeth was studing to become a nurse, but made some money working in a pup, Amin was helping at musical venues, they just had enough to survive, but they were young, in love and very happy. Lisbeth became a nurse in the summer of 1996.

With the baby on her stomach holding the hand of her lover, Lisbeth was dozing. Amin wispered mostly to himself, �he’s a beauty, hope he will be able to achieve something remarkable�. Aram Mukhtari Ryborg was born in 1997.

The only thing Aram could later clearly recall form his years at Vesterbro was Christmas. The entire family gathered to enjoy a traditional Danish Christmas dinner. The small 46m2 apartment was full. His parents, Grandpa Hamid, Grandma Jaleh, Grandma Inge, Firuzeh, Mahin and uncle Jens.

Roast duck and roast pork with Sugar-browned potatoes, and finaly Risalamande..The one who gets the almond, win a box of chocolate.

At the time he did not wonder why Hamid and Jaleh did not eat the pork, he later found out it was a cultural habit, they had no problem with the wine.

After Amin got some income from teaching at the university and Lisbeth started working nightshifts at the hospital, the family finances improved a lot. They bought a house on Hvidovre Strandvej in 2002.

The house was not too far from Jaleh appartment who was home most of the time and could take care of the child. If not working in the atelier/studio he was sharing with some friends, Hamid was also home more and more. Sometimes Hamid would take the youngster to the studio and they would make a painting together.

Aram met John Balleby when he started school in 2002, both 6 years old. There was something special about those two boys, within a week they just clicked, inseparable and loyal to each other right from the very beginning.

John was the son of a single mother without siblings, they had a small apartment on Gl. Køge Landevej, the only other family he had was his mother’s father, who they both just called Knud. Knud had an apartment in the same group of building just a little larger than the daughters.

Knud Balleby was the first top rider from Hvidovre, in the late 60’s and 70’s riding Six-day racing races on the Copenhagen Velodrome and in Gremany and Sweden, as well as in some smaller road races. When Danny Clark started singing for money while racing, Knud have had enough.

After his pro days ended, he became a very active member of Hvidovre Cykle Klub as a Junior trainer, but he also had a small cycling equipment store and workshop, on Strandhavevej 6.

The two boys spend a lot of time with their grandparants, having tea with Jaleh, or cycling out to Hamid’s atelier listning to old funny music from the 70’s and making paintings, or helping Knud in the workshop. As soon as they got 10 years old they became part of Knud’s Junior Team at the cycling club.

Aram said:�Hamid, I love riding my bike and I do train a lot, but how can I ever win, all the other boys my age a so much bigger than me?

Hamid puts his brush down, takes a few steps and looks at Aram: Do you know what Aram really means?..Hamid waited a moment as if he was expecting an answer: Aram means highlands, mountains, and if you keep that training up, forget about Denmark you will be racing in Italy, Spain and France, you be just like Andy Schleck!.

Aram would never forget that – he was destine for the mountains.

In 2009 Knud Balleby had a cancer operation, laying in the hospital bed he promised this grandson John, that he was not going to die. He promised that when he was over the chemotherapy, he would start training and finally he would arrange for himself, John, Aram, and everyone form the junior club, to conquer Mont Ventoux. (**)

The group from Hvidovre Cykle Klub was riding from Nice, a 5 day route finishing with the climb to Mont Ventoux, credits to Dan Frost cycling vacations, who was arranging the journey.

When they were climbing Mount Ventoux, Aram now 14 years old, showed for the first time to himself and others, that he was a climber, when everyone was resting he was restless, he asked politely if he could finish the last 3 km alone and he did, waiting more than 10 minutes for the next rider in the group to reach the top.

Knud Balleby made it to the top, when he came home he was declared cured.
