Raziz - So far, so good. Though on the cobbles he hasn't proven anything (yet?)

Welcome to the live coverage of La Doyenne: Liège - Bastogne - Liège. One of cycling's monuments. It's been ten years since we had an Italian winner with Di Luca. Can Andolini claim another Italian victory in the oldest of the five monuments?
The pace in the peloton has been brutal for the last 20 km. The breakaway is feeling the pressure and is crumbling!
The Ardennes form the perfect setting for this race. As the peloton dives into the forest, it is split into two big parts.
We're 80 km from the finish and Malori decides to leave his breakaway companions behind. He goes looking for a solo victory! Or does Cattelan have a plan lined out?
The are many teams willing to ride and ride hard. The pace hasn't dropped even a second since 100 km to go. Fatigue is already showing in many riders!
(...)
We're 50 km from the finish and our peloton has shrivelled into a 35-men group. What a race so far!
Here's the Redoute. We usually see some fireworks here. But the pace has been relentless and it discourages attacks. The favorites keep calm, for now.
And still Malori is up front. What an effort from the Italian. Meanwhile, the peloton keeps its hard pace. The group continues to thin out. What a brutal marathon this is turning into!
An attack! Alaphilippe decides to break the silence and rides away from the group of favorites!
He takes a gap quickly but fails to widen it further.
Malori finally gets caught. He tries to catch on but has to drop out immediately.
(...)
Everything's back together going into the final 5 kilometers. It'll be an exciting finale, that's for sure! 11 riders are still in the running for the victory!
Their names:
Michal Kwiatkowski
Antonio Andolini
Daniel Martin
Tiesj Benoot
Julian Alaphilippe
Alejandro Valverde
Sergio Luis Henao
Rui Costa
Gianni Moscon
Tim Wellens
Michal Kwiatkowski
Roman Kreuziger
Final kilometer! Here they go...
Andolini makes a very late move or a very early sprint!
Unlike the Amstel Gold Race, he's kept himself invisible today, until now. Can he pull it off?
Still going strong... Final corner.
Oh, no, he gets caught and loses momentum! He's gone too early, he's empty!
It's Tim Wellens with yet another impressive victory!
What a sprint from the Belgian. Andolini finishes 7th, he tried but failed!

The faces of the riders crossing the finish line say it all: this has been a very tough race. Exhaustion is written all across their faces. Many riders almost collapse after finishing. Despite the beautiful weather conditions, the riders have made a true battle of today's race. We try to get an interview with Andolini.
Antonio, a word?
Antonio Andolini: Very tough race today. I tried to surprise favorites - ran out of juice.
How do you feel about your Ardennes campaign?
(catching his breath) Amstel was great. Unfortunately I didn't have my Amstel legs in Wallonne or here today. I didn't feel all that great today again, which is why I didn't risk a sprint. I gambled and lost, but with these legs it was the best I could do. I'm having some troubles peaking right for these races.
Giro d'Italia is next. The race starts with a prologue right here in Belgium, in Ghent. How do you reckon your chances of grabbing Pink on the first day?
Hard to say. I'll check out the route before heading back to Italy. For now, though, my head can't be wrapped around the Giro since my legs are still screaming after today's race.

All in all a great spring,
Now we need the legs for that prologue, could provide some days in maglia rosa.

Tamijo - Definitely. First mountain stage is a few days in so pink jersey could be kept for a while

Ladies and gentlemen
Welcome back to the fastest rising cycling blog, I am Captain Bike Racer and I'll be your host for this evening. Since the start of this blog, we've discussed many races and riders. Today we have something special. Obviously I'm refering to the Giro d'Italia .
GIRO D'ITALIA IN BELGIUM
A review of stages 1 - 3
The Giro started in Belgium this year, with an opening prologue in Ghent in honour of Wouter Weylandt, who died tragically in the Giro now six years ago.
Stage 2 took the riders from Ghent to Genk. The third stage was a mini-Flèche Wallonne with the finish on the Mur de Huy. While the Giro is returning to Italy, we take some time to stand still at the first three stages and one thing - or rather person - stands out.
PEOPLE, FAUSTO COPPI IS BACK!
The Italian Champion (I was eager to say our Italian champion but I almost forgot I'm not Italian...) has been preparing for this for ages and nobody could threaten him for his first stage win in the Giro. Antonio Andolini took the prologue with a demonstration of speed and power. He conquered the Pink Jersey in absence of other top time trialists.

In the interview, Andolini showed once again what a class rider he is by paying tribute to Weylandt in his Ghent (Weylandt was born here).
And so we went to the stage for the sprinters, finishing in Genk. Andolini paraded his nice jersey through Flanders, under loud applause from the lovely Belgian crowd.
In the sprint, we had a rather large surprise. Appollonio started from very far. Or rather - he was leading out Antonio Andolini. Yes, you heard it correctly. Appo was leading out Ando, not the other way around!
Andolini - on a monster gear - powered to the head of the sprinting peloton.
Needless to say, everyone watching this, was watching with their mouth hanging open. What the hell?
The real sprinters (sorry Ando) were taken by surprise but nonetheless came all at once, rushing towards the finish.
In the end, but one sprinter, Danny Van Poppel, managed to overtake the Pink Jersey for the win of the day. A most surprising result from Andolini. It still baffles me!

And so we went towards the Mur de Huy stage. Obviously all the press had but one name for today's race: Antonio Andolini.
Could Fausto Coppi pull it off?
Movistar had a tight plan to keep the Italian from winning and shifting the power balance to Quintana's camp.
But Cattelan is no longer the small team waiting to be taken to the slaughterhouse. Instead, Taaramae did what he was hired to do. He escaped and made life harder for the Spanish team!
With Taaramae up front, Cattelan started a little plan of their own. Rosa did some excellent work for his leader.
And - BAM - off was Ando!
Quickly catching up to Taaramae was a genius move and Taaramae lead Ando over the penultimate hill.
Team work - it's a beautiful thing
All that remained was the Mur de Huy. With a satisfying lead, the Pink Jersey tackled it with style. Fausto Coppi is reborn and here he is. World: bow down for this Italian master on Belgian soil, riding the Grand Tour of his home country. His name? Antonio Andolini!
(yes, with an exclamation mark)

Hey everyone!
Without a doubt you've seen the first three stages of the Giro. You can imagine how thrilled I am! I feel very strong and confident. So happy to bring the Maglia Rosa to Italy, where stage 4 will bring us a team time trial. We don't have a team to compete for the win, but I hope to keep the jersey with the lead I've already taken.
Obviously this Giro can't continue like this, winning every other stage. My Giro is already a big success, but don't think I'll sit back now! On the contrary. Looking at how things are now and how I'm feeling, I'll try to keep this jersey until the first mountain stage. If I can win another stage by the end of the race, it'll be even greater!
Looking over the classifications, I have even formulated an objective which the team strongly agrees with. I'll try to go for the Points Classification.
Lots of ambition, but being too modest after my start would be ridiculous. No, at the moment I'm one of the strongest riders here and I want to profit from that!
Ciao
Antonio

That is a fantastic start to the Giro for Antonio! Is his sprinting really that good that he can fight for bunch sprints in the Giro?

He's never before sprinted like that in a mass sprint, but his sprinting stat is decent and with his form peaking + the lack of top sprinters + the amazing lead-out by Appollonio he almost won. His high FLAT stat also made it that he followed Appollonio without wasting a bit of energy.
Can he do it again? Maybe we'll find out

What a start, already 1'34 up on Nairo, more than 3 minutes on everyone else. Course if will be difficult in the mountains but that was brilliant.

Ando showing his spartacus track skills there and also a dominant performance in the hills. Points classification is what a rider with smarts and good skills in flat, hills, sprints and time trials (and cobbles) is built for if he is fit and pays attention, so Ando's fight for red should be very entertaining.
24/ 02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don' t drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

Yeah. If Antonio was a GC rider this'd be one of the greatest starts you could have.
Hell, it is one of the greatest starts you could have even still

I think so, too. Biggest competition will probably be Quintana if he can win a few mountain stages. Antonio will have to fight!

Welcome to the broadcast of the fifth stage of the Giro d'Italia. Ladies and gentlemen, we haven't had a moment's rest in today's stage! The course is completely flat 212 km, but there couldn't be more action! We're 50 km from the finish. In a minute we'll go to the live reporter and stay with him until the finish.
But first, let us give a small recap. Antonio Andolini would, of course, start in the Maglia Rosa, after yesterday's team time trial. Cattelan "only" lost 32 seconds on the winning team, not enough to take away the leader's jersey.
The wind is blowing restlessly today and there were several teams eager to take advantage of that. About 140 km from the finish, this happened:
The race hasn't slowed down for a second since then. We're 40 km from the finish now and we go live with our commentators Luigi and Samuel!
(...)
This is the fifth stage of the Giro and it looks like it'll be one of the most memorable stages of the entire cycling season. The peloton is ripped in a million pieces. AG2R, Lotto NL and Trek worked together and turned everything inside out. Many GC contenders have been left behind and are struggling to keep up.
(...)
We have a lead group of 14 riders. Here are their names again.
Jan Brockhoff
Matthieu Ladagnous
Niccolo Bonifazio
Mikhail Ignatiev
Fabio Felline
Fernando Gaviria
Sean De Bie
Gedinimas Butkus
Jens Debusschere
Antonio Andolini
Marc Sarreau
Davide Appollonio
Danny Van Poppel
Nacer Bouhanni
Note that there is no Nibali, Aru, Quintana...
We can also tell you that Nibali and Aru were the latest to be dropped and are only half a minute behind, while Quintana has already been spotted over 3 minutes behind.
A lot of decent sprinters left in the leading group, Samuel. Who do you see winning this stage?
- Lots of fast legs indeed, but this won't be an ordinary sprint. The pace has been so high for over 100 km now. I think the one with the most energy left will come out on top. Riders who can digest long distances at a high pace.
(...)
We're heading into the final kilometers and it's Appollonio for Cattelan Italia who's going to the lead and give Andolini a chance to take his third stage.
Here we go! This hectic and brilliant race is about to come to a climax! Appollonio starts the sprint for his team leader!
Sarreau tries to pass him but the acceleration doesn't bring him where he wants to be. Like we thought, there isn't any juice left in anyone's left. This is anyone's race to take!
A JUMP FROM ANDOLINI! He steps on the pedals and managed to create a gap! HE'S GOING FOR NUMBER 3!
VICTORY! Amazing, Antonio Andolini grabs another stage win after what we can already call THE stage of the season! What a race, what a winner!
Fantastic work, he was able to let the other teams do the work all day long, then let Appollonio come out at the end and finish it off against Sarreau. Un-be-lievable!
(...)
Minutes in and groups are still coming in. Sometimes a few riders, sometimes a larger group.

This broadcast is almost to an end. Of course we wouldn't want to leave you without letting the hero of the day give you his side of the story. Here he is, Antonio Andolini.
Antonio, what a race! On social media, many already speak of the stage of the season.
Antonio Andolini: It was crazy today. The wind was pretty hard and suddenly the pace went up like crazy. I was surrounded all day long by my team mates, I can't thank them enough for their work today.
We never saw a Cattelan rider trying to make the difference. Why not try to bridge the GC competitors as far away as possible?
The GC is not an objective, even though I'm minutes ahead now. I had no interest in letting my team mates work when there were still more than 100 km to go. Near the end, when I could've put some team mates in front, we were already thinned out too much and I prefered Appollonio at my side.
When did it occur to you that you could win this stage?
About 10 km from the finish, I knew I would make another great step towards the Points Jersey. With sprinters like Sarreau, Van Poppel and Bouhanni still in the group, I knew it'd be very tough to actually win the stage. But that final sprint wasn't a true sprint. It was a test of who had anything left in their legs. I still had an acceleration left and so I could make the difference.
5 stages, 3 victories. A prologue, a hilly stage and a flat stage. These are performances we haven't seen in ages. It reminds us of legends of the sport and perhaps comparable to modern day riders like Sagan. One cycling fan already launched the hashtag #AndoCoppi.
While that's a big compliment, of course, I'm not worried about things like that. I'm just doing what I can, trying to make the most out of my career. This Giro, everything that could've gone my way has done so. Sometimes everything falls into place and then miracles can happen.
How do you see the rest of this Giro? Won't you try to hang on and go for a top 10 GC?
Like I said, the GC is no objective. The mountains will automatically bring the best climbers to the front again, even if I'm minutes ahead now. For me, the Points Jersey is the main priority now. Well, one thing lists even higher...
The stage to Varese.
Yes.
