Hey

It's been a while, hasn't it? I haven't found the time to get back to this blog ever since last year's Paris - Tours.
To be perfectly honest, I had to shy away from this for a while. Why, you may ask? Well, I needed all my attention, all my focus on my training. Even if a blog like this doesn't sound like much work, I couldn't be bothered at all.
I want to make the most out of my career and don't want to look back in regret. That said, I couldn't stay away forever so here's a small update on my latest activities.

As you probably know, San Remo and Wevelgem were two decent races from me, but both without a major result. I decided not to stay in Flanders because those Flemish roads don't suit me too well. Instead I would race in the Basque Country to prepare for the Ardennes Classics and my first Giro d'Italia!

I used this race to gain form, so I rode as a lieutenant for Ratto, who wanted to show himself here. I set the pace in the peloton for hours this past week.
In the final time trial, the parcours was slightly up and down. Tailor-made for someone like me and I succeeded expectations by winning the stage, finishing 19th in the General Classification.

Unfortunately Ratto was unable to win a stage, but he did finish 2nd in stage 2.

Amstel Gold Race: War Zone

Welcome to Sportivo, we start with cycling today, as we go live to the Amstel Gold Race. The main favorites before the race were Valverde, Wellens, Sagan and Gilbert.

Riding for Cattelan Italia, Malori sought the refuge of the early breakaway, probably to put some rest on the team for today's leader Antonio Andolini.

The pace was controlled by the usual suspects. Movistar, Quickstep and Lotto. We're going on to the live part of our coverage now. We go live to our reporters, Samuel and Roberto!

Welcome, dear viewer. We're still about 40 km from the finish and things are heating up. The three breakaway riders are still a minute and a half up the field, where Movistar has been active all day!

One thing that I've noticed is that Andolini is looking really good. He's been near the front all day, very aware of everything.

The riders are going up the Keutenberg now. This usually causes some devastation in the peloton. Let's see who ends up on the wrong side of a split.

Big gaps today! Here we see a group, who are they? I see Andolini, Martin, Alaphilippe. Wait a minute, apparently Valverde and Wellens have broken away out of view. Camera missed it but both riders are at the front of the race.

Andolini is restless and realizes this group isn't riding fast enough. He breaks away!

He picks up Malori, still a remnant of the BOTD, and both riders try to gap the bridge to the two leaders.

Both time trial specialists, they make up a lot of space quickly! The attackers realize they will be caught and give up, now. We're looking at a four-men lead group!

They have been caught. But a chasing group has also found the leaders and so we have a group of about 10 riders. Andolini is making the pace.
- Jesus, is he strong today. We've never seen him like this in the Amstel, have we?
- Certainly not. But I'm not complaining! What a great race so far.

Andolini takes the lead on the Cauberg! He forces the pace and goes for the win!
Can he do it?

What a display of power! He doesn't look behind him, just keeps going! From top to bottom, he leads the group, never dropping the pace for a second! But can he finish it, that's the main question?

It looks like Wellens and Sagan are barely hanging on. The others are cracking! There's a small gap!

The three keep a gap. Final kilometer now!

And they'll sprint for the win! What can Andolini do? He sees Sagan has to close a small gap and starts sprinting! Wellens follows Andolini. Sagan has to make up ground!

Here comes Wellens, he wants to pass Andolini! Sagan is coming, too. It's going to be close!

Here they come, side by side... And it's Andolini who's managed to keep his lead on the finish after a power sprint, ANDOLINI WINS!

What an incredible achievement from him! He's dictated the race for the final 10km and finishes it off in a sprint against Sagan and Wellens. This is the making of a giant in the sport. Mark our words, dear viewer! We haven't seen the last of Antonio Andolini.

Wow, Antonio, what a race.
Antonio Andolini: Yes, I know. I can't believe it.
It looked as if the competition was afraid of you. After Valverde and Wellens had been caught, you dictated the pace and there were no more attacks.
Going into the final kilometers, I wanted to keep the group together, because a larger group was coming closer. I wanted to keep the pace high enough. I got some help but I ended up doing most of the work. Perhaps the others had seen I had great legs today. Originally I wanted to stay hidden as long as possibe, but I had given myself away when Valverde and Wellens almost escaped for the win. I had no choice, they would've stayed ahead without a reaction.
On the cauberg, you were in the front from bottom to the top.
I didn't want to be surprised. I can ride a fast pace a long time, but when too many riders start attacking, I tend to waste a lot of energy responding to them. This is the way I had to do it in order to win. And I'm happy I did. Of course, you need the legs to pull it off, so a super day didn't hurt!
Did you know you were able to beat Sagan in the sprint?
To be honest, I thought I wouldn't. Still, I was willing to risk it. I'd rather take a three man group to a sprint and be guaranteed a podium spot than to sit up and risk a 10-men sprint. But then I saw Sagan had left a small gap and had to correct that. I decided to make it hard for him and I started the sprint from far out. I think I surprised Wellens a bit there, he stayed in my wheel a bit too long and I kept both off just until the finish line.
Just last year, you had to abandon the race, went on to finish 97th in Flèche and 20th in Liège. Did you come here with the ambition to win?
I certainly did. I've grown a lot since last season, and I wasn't 100% last year. I knew I had it in me to win this race. I've made a lot of progress over the last season and this winter and today it pays off!

Great stage win in Basque Country, but Amstel is such a beauty on the mantle piece.

Flèche Wallonne

Moving on to cycling. Today Flèche Wallonne was raced. The second of the Ardennes classics, Flèche Wallonne is traditionally decided on the final climb of the Mur de Huy.

A break of three spend all day in the attack, only to be caught in the final 10 km.

However, the traditional Mur de Huy sprint was disrupted by an attacking Wellens. None of the other favorites had an answer for this attack.

He held his ground on the Mur de Huy and so Wellens took this win deservedly. Italian Moscon finished 4th after an incredible sprint.
Andolini just missed out on the top 10, finishing 11th. After the race, he stated that Flèche Wallonne is "a tough race to win. The Mur de Huy is a monster. I turned on the Mur in a lost position and you get no second chance here."
