Ion still holding his place in the GC. Don't think Craddock's 5th place is secure by any means.

@all - Ion played all the cards he could today, no regrets after this stage whatsoever.
Abhishkek - don't think anyone's spot is, judging by how often solid looking riders have cracked so far

Always would have been difficult to strike on such a tough terrain.
That's also about where we belong is this kind of stages.

Giro d'Italia (WT) Stage 19/21, 138.6 kms
The Last Days of Truth - Part 1 Breakaway rider Loïc Bouchereau came first atop Passo di Gavia as the peloton took it easy. Vuillermoz had cracked earlier on the ascent, thus Bouchereau opened up the climbing clash for the blue mountain Maglia. After a short moment of inadvertence, Izagirre suddenly found himself off the back of the Maglia Rosa group on Passo dello Stelvio. Intxausti assisted him as long as he could but a few kilometers from the summit, Ion was on his own. It seemed like he'd manage to limit the time loss. When it seems like things can't get much worse, they do. At the top the difference was not very large, but Izagirre would hit the tarmac in the descent. The gap to the Maglia Rosa group increased, to over a minute. Seba Henao caught up with Ion after his crash. Near the intermediate sprint the two of them would catch up with a thoroughly thinned bunch. That was the good news. In all hectics we had completely missed a real coup. Somehow, an 11-man group had opened a big gap to the Maglia Rosa group. Majka tried to bridge all alone but he got stuck at 3'10", as this leading group had just started the brutal and irregular Val Martello. Eternal attacker Mikel Landa tore the group apart as only Quintana and Craddock were keeping up. At this rate Ion could lose several minutes. And he had still more than 20 nasty kilometers of climbing to deal with. Far behind them Ion was on his own again when Seba had to let go. A steady pace he could keep up was what he was looking for. We have no clue what must've gone through his mind as many guys started to pass. Quintana and Craddock were no match for Mikel Landa in the sprint, as the Basque won his 16th GT stage and the 5th in this Giro. Are you guys wondering where our Polish Maglia Rosa Rafal Majka might have gone? The winner had crossed the line 3'30" ago, when the camera spotted a man in pink at last. He had 8 km to go and was paying for his efforts on the flat, big time. Purito and him barely kept the pedals turning. Even a Ion Izagirre in both pain and panic must've passed him at some point. The clock was all that mattered when Ion crossed the line. The verdict? It was harsh, 15'52". We could not do anything but wait now. We knew, for a fact, that Quintana'd just become the tenth different Maglia Rosa. What a bloodbath! The stage was as brutal as expected. Poor Majka, but great Craddock, he seemed to be catchable, now he's 17 minutes ahead! And Ion, 25th on the day and stilll 6th in the GC, a small miracle. Tomorrow won't be any easier, either. |

That was absolutely a gruesome stage, with many changes in the overall top 10, glad that Izagirre could hang on to 6th.
Another monster tomorrow

Fortunately he has, for now.

An eventful day to say the least! Don't think the RuralvÃa car has been so nervous before. Initially Ion made a mistake himself and paid for the risks he had to take afterwards. Hats off for the race tactics of that first group though. Luckily Majka's plan fell through, as it helped Ion to keep his spot. Fifth place could've been so close!

Keeping his spot is a big achievement at the back of a day stuffed with a combination of pain, panic and stress. Hopefully the crash won't affect him too much as he's going to need his legs of the first 19 days again.

RuralvÃa loses 3 more riders in the Giro May 30th, 2019 Grand Tours usually really take it out of the riders. There's not only the mountains or the accumulation of stages, but also the stress of making it to the finish on time. That is exactly where things went wrong today. As the pace was upped on the infamous Stelvio, many riders got forced out of the peloton. Sixteen among them would not cross the finish atop Val Martello before the time limit had expired. Those 16 riders included Federico Zurlo, Aridani Tinajero & Fernando Grijalba, which means our team will be five as from tomorrow. Galibier stage winner Gianluca Brambilla, Trentin and eternal fourth JoJo Rojas were excluded as well.

GP de Plumelec-Morbihan (1.1) Bretagne, 181.2 kms
Something could have come from the two-man break, if it had not been for Kasperkiewicz' constant wheelsucking. Cortes could not react when the Pole jumped from behind his back, twenty kilometers from the line. Everything came back together and subsequent attacks got neutralised. King Lok Cheung, from Hongkong, won in a mass sprint ahead of Bailly. GT's are no walks in the park, clearly.
It's great thing for exotic countries to have their fair share of talents.

Something must have happened to Brambilla, it's possible he crashed as well. Above all we're happy to keep Ion's spot, let's hope we can defend it being only five as of tomorrow.

Giro d'Italia (WT) Stage 20/21, 203.3 kms
Twenty stages in and finally we have Purito, who's set to retire after the current season, in the break. Fellow escapees Bouchereau & Vuillermoz would probably settle things concerning the Maglia Azzurra once for all. Vuillermoz came first atop Passo Costalunga. Bouchereau came 3rd as he saw King of Mountain leader Vuillermoz widen his point's advantage. Bouchereau's last hopes got smashed on Passo di San Pellegrino (11km 6.4% avg, 14% max.). Vuillermoz dropped Dennis, RodrÃguez & Monsalve again as well. Securing the jersey came down to finishing the Giro now. Meanwhile former Maglia Rosa Majka, whose hope for the GC had been affected before, took another hit as he let go near San Pellegrino's top. Vuillermoz didn't look back and took the maximum of points atop Passo di Giau as well. The closest chaser sat 4' down, the vast peloton at 18'. The Maglia Rosa group finally hit some pace over Tre Croci. A 16-rider group had gapped the rest, ahead of the last climb. Main absentee was Ion Izagirre's closest threat in the overall standings, GC 7th Kennaugh. Landa did what he had to if he was still planning on winning the Giro. A first attack came on Col Sant'Angelo, a steep appetiser to be digested quickly while nearing the iconic and brutal Tre Cime di Lavaredo ascent. The falling snow made this an image which could definitely end up in a frame in Vuillermoz' living room. A genuinely superb way to secure the long-awaited stage win and become the first French rider since Laurent Fignon, back in 1984, to take home the blue jersey for the best climber. Landa would pay for trying his all and could only look on, as Nairo most probably took off towards a fourth overall win in six years here in Italy. The Colombian gained almost 2' on Landa to accentuate his supremacy. Ion did not climb with the best but defended his GC position with verve.
