Good job by Pello Bilbao, taking the KoM and a stage podium.

Two nice rewards indeed after a race where we expected and achieved nothing as for the rest. Wink

From Galibier, with Time Gaps?
i.imgur.com/7crCpIm.png
Astana, who do not seem to have brought a potential top 10 contender, surprisingly set the pace from the start. Halfway cat.1 Col du Mont Cenis they would catch Maglia Azzurra Vuillermoz, the only rider in the break. Seconds later, Gianluca Brambilla (GC 17th) attacked a 40-man peloton.
i.imgur.com/HSSPd5H.png
The pace dropped in a very brutal way. Even Pinot, who had sat around 8 minutes down, could come back. Loads of riders rejoined the peloton.
i.imgur.com/CNwlZVB.png
Monsalve and Pizzaballa managed to catch up with Brambilla before the gap had grown too big. That trio tackled 1st cat. Col du Télégraphe with an advantage of 7'35", which'd allow Brambilla to move into the top 10.
i.imgur.com/o7gdLLC.png
Brambilla already dropped Pizzaballa and Monsalve before the eminent cat.1 Col du Galibier climb had even started. The Italian's advantage of 12 minutes even put Ion Izagirre's 7th place in the overall in jeopardy.
i.imgur.com/W6nQfld.png
At last, Nairo Quintana lit up the Fight for Pink, 11 kilometers to the top.
i.imgur.com/M1cTn4S.png
López, Majka, Nibali and Landa joined forces and bridged, 8 kms to the top. Izagirre and Maglia Rosa Craddock were already facing a 52" loss.
i.imgur.com/Jj1FTfr.png
Things started to look worse and worse for the American as Landa and Nibali couldn't follow the high pace either. I. Izagirre's time loss could also reach multiple minutes because the Basque kept losing positions.
i.imgur.com/wjlc2RD.png
Brambilla's maiden GT stage win is one to be proud of! What a way to return to winning ways after more than a year without raising the arms!
i.imgur.com/M43oUcg.png
Majka sprinted to third place behind Monsalve, being the best of the GC contenders and gaining time on every single competitor. MA López and Quintana did a good job limiting the time lost to twelve and bonus secs.
i.imgur.com/vStVNES.png
Craddock lost 2'45" to Majka, not good enough to keep his jersey. As of the next stage we'll have a Colombian in pink: Miguel Superman López.
i.imgur.com/0qpKQXd.png
Izagirre lost 4'17" to Majka but managed to keep his 7th place for now.

Nice that Izagirre was able to keep Brambilla behind him in GC.

A steady top 10 from Ion so far but looks like it'll be hard to climb higher up the standings!

Ripley
Impressive performance by Brambilla and huge time gaps. And I see now, it's the 2013 route and the toughest stages still lie ahead. In real life, stage 19 was cancelled and stage 20 shortened, but Ion and the rest won't have that luxury and will really suffer.

One of the down sides of not having a strong team. These kind of breakaways could be a threat until the very end of the race. Hopefully himself among better climbers will be enough. Pfft

Won't be happy with the time loss but his current GC place will make up for that. Smile

No doubt this is the most unpredictable GT I have ever experienced. Every GC contender seems to have had some bad day or even days, so hopefully that's a thing we can use to our advantage.

That's of course if Izagirre doesn't stumble upon an off day himself. Smile

Great stage for him and the country indeed, finally the Italians have their second stage win. Rewatched most of the stage as I advanced through the races and didn't even remember the final weekend was almost so decapitated back then. Let's hope we will make it through without too much damage. Post-rest day Borefest or Madness?
i.imgur.com/vE8KjJi.png
Vuillermoz came first atop Col du Mont Cenis, the first labeled climb of today. Another 14 points gained on his nearest KoM rival Contreras. His fellow escapees included Henao, Lindeman, Simon Clarke and Gautier.
i.imgur.com/V1xL78f.png
Movistar kept the gap at 2 to 3 minutes and really picked up the pace in the last 50km. Henao and Pizzaballa were reeled in, 7 riders had 1'33".
i.imgur.com/UPITavr.png
Feeling the peleton breathing down their necks, Lindeman tried to delay the inevitable. Mikel Landa's Movistar Team kept going on, as in raging.
i.imgur.com/kErCgvY.png
Izagirre had a very strong Intxausti by his side in the final kilometers ahead of the tricky 6.25km climb to the Piedmontese village of Andrate.
i.imgur.com/Yf9aVCa.png
Izagirre, Landa and Maglia Rosa López created a gap right at the foot. It didn't take very long for Landa to shake the other two, while a strong Majka was about to join him. Quintana, López were the chasers at 50".
i.imgur.com/6j4okc2.png
Izagirre handled the climb brilliantly as he passed the Maglia Rosa duo and joined Landa and Majka in the descent. López, Quintana sat at 45".
i.imgur.com/9DRKSXW.png
The three remained together until the ultimo chilometro. Kennaugh had joined the chasers, who had succeeded in keeping the gap around 45".
i.imgur.com/B1nrFtH.png
Landa launched first, a tad faster than the others might have expected.
i.imgur.com/BTrydxy.png
That is four for Landa! No win or second place for us, but a great stage nonetheless. Rafal Majka is the next man to move into the Maglia Rosa.

Perfect, passing Formolo and taking a stunning 4 min. on Craddock, still a long way to a top 5, but I've hope and faith.

Craddock is fading so Ion definitely has his sights on 5th. But he better not have a bad day on one tough stages ahead.

Thanks! Strook where he had too but getting a good GC spot is usually far more difficult than retaining it. We might not even be halfway our quest. Wink

We've taken a nice first step, but more are left to be taken in order to get the in our eyes best possible result in a 5th place. Smile

So far it's been incredibly difficult to evaluate the GC contenders' form with bad days appearing everywhere. Most of these riders have managed to hit back so I'm afraid we shouldn't count out anyone until the very end. Pfft

The Fight for Pink
i.imgur.com/LLah8lr.png
Fast forward to the foot of the sole climb. The 9-man break saw 7 guys surrender as Bert-Jan Lindeman attacked followed by Beñat Intxausti.
i.imgur.com/FAK2SIR.png
Beñat slowly bridged to the Dutchman and was about to drop him right afterwards when the pack caught them both. Less than 2 km to the top.
i.imgur.com/7fFsClZ.png
The long-awaited attack came from Mikel Landa, under 1000m from the top. A 7 men strong group of Landa, Quintana, Majka, König, Craddock, Mollema and Izagirre was formed in the descent, as 19 riders chased.
i.imgur.com/HjORKd8.png
While nearing the city of Vicenza, the pace in the group stagnated. Ion saw a chance and attacked, as the other 6 were caught by the chasers.
i.imgur.com/vAaSqXX.png
König eventually chased him down but Izagirre had one trick left up his sleeve. He started jumping wheels and tried to sprint from 800m out to surprise the others. Many among those guys were tired, or even empty.
i.imgur.com/8Lgi3MB.png
The wall to hit came a little too early for Ion as he finished outside the top 10. Maglia Rosa Majka won the stage ahead of Landa and Tosh Van der Sande. Loser of the day Brambilla dropped from 9th to 15th overall.
