Bumpy stage today before the first of the real tough stages after the rest day. Will be interesting to see how Dumoulin vs the rest is gonna pan out.

I am also a huge fan of stages like this. Hopefully some fireworks by those mentioned indeed.
Pelli and Anacona/Amador in the break and attack on Stelvio by Nibbles/Nairo would be fun

Yeah and Kruijswijk seems to come into for now, he is a beast on a stage like this in the 3rd week, Landa is one of the purest climbers as well and love him such climbs when he is on form (which he is). Prolly the favourite for the stage considering he is out of GC.
Hopefully, people won't be too scared of Dumoulin, but I can't imagine Nairo and Nibali will be that. Pinot, Zakarin, Mollema etc. on the other hand will be contend with podium. |

On Landa, seeing as he looks to have recovered from any injuries sustained in that crash and down in the GC, he's obviously looking for a stage win but with the remaining stages having so many big climbs he could also target the mountains classification. A 3-way battle between Fraile, Polanc and Landa in the last week would be damn fun to watch and give real credibility to the Blue Jersey.

Yes, at least a real good climber would win the thing then. Not like Visconti a few years ago. 
Stage win for Landa you guys say? Yes please Hoping TomDum can surprise many and limit his losses. His team is really weak although with Geschke and Ten Dam they have two pretty clever guys on it. What will likely hurt him the most are accelerations at the Mortirolo or Stelvio. If Quintana and Nibali get away from him there, it's going to be wild.
Honestly, I see no reason why they wouldn't attack so far out. Especially Nibali needs to go big or go home.

Nibali will need amazing leap forward at rest day. because so far he has been really far from peak. He has been dropped so many times.
All accelerations has been really weak.
But who knows he have seen 3rd week miracles before.
I wont predict nothing. It will be full of surprises. |

The only bad theng to say about this stage is we once again will ascent Stelvio from the 'easy' side and not from Prato (they are descending that side) which is up there with Rettenbachferner, Mortirolo and Zoncolan in difficulty! Its a monstrosity - its still a super, super hard climb from Bormio tho.
And I guess they could have thrown Gavia in instead of Mortirolo now they are ascending that from its easy side to get some insane altitude climbing going, but thats just nitpicking.  Imagine this stage with Gavia from its hard side or Mortirolo from the 'classical' Mazzo side they more or less always use, that would have been epic. Now Mortirolo is more about warming the legs up, its still a very solid climb in general tho.
All in all, brilliant stage design, now its up to the riders. Reminds me of this monster stage on the dolomites, some of Angelo Zomegnan's finest work of art:

Look who finished 9th on that stage... and young Steven K who even had the audacity to attack the almighty Contador on Fedaia, one of the most beautiful climb (the same Contador attacked on Giau a good 70 km from the line, proceeded my a Nibali-atttack from on the descent on Giau into Fedaia).

Really looking forward to tomorrow's stage. Should be spectacular right from early on. Will be interesting to see if Quintana has kept some sort of hidden injury from his crash, but he should up there in any case. My bet for the best of the favorites is Kruijswijk though, this kind of stage really suits him most and he seems to get better and better compared to the rest.

Yeah, but better ascent those hairpins. Last 3 times they have climbed Stelvio is from Bormio, if I'm not mistaken, and not since 2005 when Basso cracked completely have the climbed the monster Prato-side. But that stuff just keeps the legend growing, so its not all bad. Using a particular climb scarcely adds mystique, thats why TdF shouldn't be ascending Ventoux and Alpe d Huez every 2 years and not use Tourmalet basically every year (they aren't this time tho).

I have some faith he will at least limit the damage enough for the ITT. But Quintana is a beast in the 3rd week. |

One of the hardest stages i have ever seen looking at the profile, so hopefully at least one of Amador/Anacona duo in the break and Nairo goes early (first Stelvio?) to catch them and work with them.

A big break got away finally. Movistar sent Anacona and Bennati, Giant sent Bauhaus and Haga. Miraculously, Van den Broeck shows signs of life  . All names (taken from Sporza):
