Lost some time again but as I said I'd be really happy with any top 5-10 place at the end of the race. Don't expect Izagirre up with the best climbers. Wink

Two stage wins so far on the first rest day is pretty successful I think!
12th in the GC. Is he top 10 material?

It is, especially because 1 stage win was enough to achieve our sponsor goal! Frankly I had expected Izagirre to be in the top 10 by now, especially with that time trial. I guess riding them in 3D is a bigger challenge than simulating them.

Given his 4th place of last year one could expect more than this, but playing on Extreme, riding TT's in 3D and better opposition might change a lot. Any GC place between 6th and 10th would be a great outcome.

The Mountains Have Arrived!
i.imgur.com/UlDQarm.png
Yes, a breakaway this is. Twenty riders strong and established after the merge of some smaller groups. Interesting names among the attackers were Contreras, Vuillermoz, Colla, Mäkelä, Canty and Intxausti for us.
i.imgur.com/sCeUnUF.png
Tinkoff, mainly in the person of Sacha Modolo, tried to keep the gap as small as possible. A hard fight later, the bunch conceded 2'44" nearing the cat.1 Passo Cason di Lanza, with steep slopes near the foot and top.
i.imgur.com/ieKTVRD.png
Contreras attacked like a madman from the foot. He started to struggle in the last 2km, but had gained 2'30" on his closest chaser by then. The pack had been split by a brutal pace and kept getting reduced each km.
i.imgur.com/7D2Cugt.png
Intxausti was the third to reach the summit, 4'34" down on Contreras. The reduced, 13 men strong GC group was about to reel him in as well.
i.imgur.com/EhJy3kd.png
On the flat the damage could finally be assessed. Contreras had 25kms left and an advantage of 2'24". The Maglia Rosa group counted sixteen chasers, including I. Izagirre and Intxausti. Maglia Rosa Formolo had Majka, Nibali and Chernetskiy by his side. GC adversaries Lopez, Landa, Quintana and Craddock had also made this seemingly promising move.
i.imgur.com/SBTTm7X.png
Many GC contenders had missed the boat though. Nerz, Frank, Ghilardi, Mollema, Pinot, König, Kruijswijk and Latour had all been caught behind in several groups. Mollema's case (4'15" to Maglia Rosa) was the worst.
i.imgur.com/z2mP6hK.png
Formolo's teammates made sure the bonus was further extended. Near the foot of Altopiano del Montasio (10.5km, avg. 8%), Intxausti couldn't keep up and got dropped. Contreras had 1'58" left, as the E3 was losing 2'39" to the Maglia Rosa group. The guy in pink didn't look good though.
i.imgur.com/R9wJ8vJ.png
Quintana and Landa soon distanced the others on the climb. Lopez and Craddock tried to bridge to them at their own pace and so did Izagirre.
i.imgur.com/jMqOwQk.png
Maglia Rosa in crisi! Formolo struggled after his team had taken charge all day long. His teammates stayed with him trying to limit the damage.
i.imgur.com/3yYMX4H.png
Five kilometers from the top Quintana and Landa were joined by Lopez, Craddock and the rather unknown 25-year-old Chinese climber Jin Guo.
i.imgur.com/JwVTCPp.png
I. Izagirre failed to catch up as well. Contreras came into sight for the five when he was about to go under the red kite. Our leader was losing one minute to them already and he had been surpassed by Hirt as well.
i.imgur.com/L74R8ZX.png
The GC contenders arrived too late, Contreras won this stage from the breakaway. Craddock and Quintana snatched the other bonus seconds, as the Texan also moved into the pink jersey. Aged 27 he finally seems to be ready to show why he's always been considered a great prospect.
i.imgur.com/4RMmZQ7.png
Ion struggled in the last kilometers and finished just ahead of Formolo, losing 3 minutes to Craddock's group. However, he'd gain valuable time on some of the race favourites like Pinot, Mollema, Morton and Ghilardi.

Cracking the top 10, nice. Next stage coming up shouldn't see too many changes there, but the Giro can always surprise. Lovely lay-out!

Mixed fortunes for Ion.

What a drama – great report.

Fine that you had Intxausti up front, I guess he could help Izagirre some after he got caught, at least get a bottle. Even though Ion lost a bit on the last climb, a great stage crawling up the GC.

A Chinese climber? Cool. Craddock better than I've ever seen him, very impressive.

It's great to finally have breached that top 10 door. Tomorrow doesn't look to hard but I tend to struggle at short hills when they go all-in from the foot. Let's hope for the best.

I've applied many different layouts throughout the story but I'm very happy with the look of the current one. Smile

The time loss suffered is quite big indeed, but losing time to the best is something we'll have to settle for. Keeping our spot and gaining time where we can will be our next aim. Wink

Thanks, good to see Ion having support near the end. Still a long way to go but at last we have moved into the top 10. Let's stay there now. Wink

And this one wasn't signed for sponsorship purposes. Pfft

Craddock doing great so far indeed, but the road to Brescia is still a long one. And we know what happened to American GT hopes the last couple of years.

A historyless stage later, the sprint started after the four'd been reeled in. Barbero sat too far back and wouldn't be able to defend his chance.

The Fight for Pink
i.imgur.com/2fYwH8l.png
Sebastian Henao made the breakaway in a stage that should suit him. The others were KoM contender Vuillermoz, Nelson, Canty and Gautier.
i.imgur.com/IudbjHf.png
Despite being one of the better climbers, Sebastian was the first to be dropped from the group, even before the cat.1 climb had really started.
i.imgur.com/fcRZlHJ.png
Nelson and Canty lost contact as well and those three reached the Sella Campigotto summit together. Vuillermoz and Gautier had 4' on them as a still very large peloton was about to reel in Seba and his companions.
i.imgur.com/vAefpyi.png
Several teams paced in the valley, which was a disaster for the leaders' duo. Some 10kms from the finish line, Gautier would attack Vuillermoz.
i.imgur.com/PywsMqA.png
In the end, everything would come down to the final bump anyway. And not for the first time, Landa was the first to kick away. Majka, Quintana, Pinot and Lopez managed to stay close. Izagirre had a few seconds on the fading Maglia Rosa group, with Craddock, Chernetskiy and Formolo.
i.imgur.com/fIeyzLH.png
Landa won his third stage, showing off that he probably is the very best climber in this Giro. Behind him Pinot, Quintana, Lopez and Majka came home in the same time as the five all gained time on leader Craddock.
i.imgur.com/duU3stl.png
I. Izagirre finished in 8th, between the Quintana and Craddock groups.
i.imgur.com/UbVrVEl.png
Craddock finished some more time later, behind Formolo and Nibali. A big boost for Landa, who really opened up the battle for the overall win.
