What a gap between the top two riders and the rest. Landa was too tough an opponent for the KOM jersey, sometimes it can be (too) easy to win the jersey, but sometimes you're up against strong competition, even more so at the Giro than the Tour, in my experience. Certainly a good chance of winning it in Spain if you go for it. |

Landa had lost a lot of time in the first week and half so he was allowed to be in all those breaks. He ended up winning three stages in the last week from the break and finished 11th in the GC!
The KOM in the Vuelta will definitely be a target. It depends finally on what role the team give me.

A successful first GT I reckon, though I haven't caught up with it entirely (going anti-chronological, though). Second in KoM is great, but the gap was big enough.
GC-wise, a strong showing from Meintjes. But two guys way better than the rest, obviously |

I got to wear the KOM leader's jersey, which was brilliant  . Unfortunately, it was Landa who I was up agianst! (Silly AI wouldn't allow me to get into the breaks on stages 19 and 20)
Meintjes might have challenged for a podium had he not lost so much time in the first week. Jungels took it by virtue of his superior time-trialling, while Aru was the more consistent climber. Uran got to wear the Maglia Rosa for a couple of stages in the first week too.

After the excitement of the Giro, I was off to Switzerland for my first outing in the Tour de Suisse.
Meintjes was the designated leader again here. I was given a free role and I was eager to test my legs once more.
Stage 1 was the prologue where I was the best of Lotto, finishing 26 seconds behind stage winner Tony Martin.
Gilbert joined the break for us on Stage 2, so I decided to hang back in the pack. The gap to the break was controlled by the peloton who reeled them in on the flat before the last climb. I attacked on that same climb, pulling away from the pack. There was a counter and soon there were six of us out in front. Eventually, Rui Costa and Peter Sagan distanced the rest of us and the former claimed the stage. I finished 6th while Meintjes took 10th, part of the next group on the road. I was up to 5th in the GC and 1st in the U25s! Gilbert was leading the KOM standings.
Stage 3
I started (and ended) this stage wearing the White jersey. I was being protected on this stage, being the highest placed in our team! Gilbert was once again in the break, which, once again, was caught some way before the finish. The finish was uphill and I found myself in an excellent position in the final straight. I went for the win but was outsprinted to the line by Sagan.

Stage 4 was flat. Beukens joined the break but it did not succeed. Gilbert sprinted to 10th place.
Stage 5 was similar to the last one. van Hoecke joined the break but they were pulled back. I was dropped with 10 km to go, losing nearly 7 minutes and falling to 9th in the GC. Meintjes finished 2nd on the stage and moved up to 2nd in the GC behind Pinot.
Stages 6, 7 and 8 were majorly flat and mostly uneventful for us. I stayed in the pack and out of trouble throughout.
Stage 9 was the 38km ITT which would decide the GC. I put in a decent time, finishing 15th on the day, but fell a place in the GC to 10th. Meintjes had a poor day, losing 4 minutes to stage winner Tony Martin, 2 minutes to Pinot and 90 seconds to eventual 2nd place Tony Gallopin. Our team leader would settle for 3rd in the GC. I won the U25 classification.

A good race for me picking up the U25s classification win and a top 10 in the GC. An even better race for Meintjes to build on a good Giro. Gilbert impressed too with his attacks into and from the break. The ITTs were a bit of a disappointment. That's something I'll need to work on in the days ahead. Signing off. Half the year's over! Wow, how time flies!
July will see me head off to Austria and then back to Spain for one stage race and a classic. First up, it was the Int. Osterreich Rundfahrt.
Internationale Osterreich Rundfahrt
I was chosen as the leader of the team for this race. With the field not as strong here, I sensed this could be a big opportunity for a high finish.
Stage 1
The first of two consecutive MTFs right off the blocks. I was being touted as one of the favourites for this stage! I stayed in the pack, keeping a close eye on stage and GC favourite Dan Martin throughout. When we reached the climb to the finish, the break had already been caught, I had one helper in Vliegen while Martin had two. The size of the group kept reducing till there were only 13 riders left with 4 km to go. At 2 km to go, I attacked out of the group along with six others but could not keep pace till the end. I ended up 6th, while Riccardo Zoidl won the stage. Martin had a bad day and lost more than two minutes.
Another MTF awaited us at the end of Stage 2. The story of the first part of the stage was similar to stage 1. Martin attacked at the base of the climb while Zoidl was dropped in the early kilometres. Martin was never sighted again till the finish. I was able to get away from the pack with Berhane and Mamykin in tow. We dropped Mamykin and then Berhane dropped me. I finished 3rd on the stage and moved up to 2nd in the GC!

Stage 5 was flat to begin with but my legs were bad by the time the climb to the finish came around. Both me and Berhane lost time as Zoidl moved up to 2nd, while I dropped to 3rd in the GC.
Stage 6 was one for the sprinters again. This time there would be no major result for us.
Stage 7 was the ITT which would decide the final standings. Martin had a substantial lead and despite losing more than 2 minutes to stage winner Zoidl, still maganed to keep the lead by over a minute. I finished 12th, lost a minute to Zoidl, but hung on to 3rd place in the GC.
Stage 8 was flat again and without incident. There was no change in the GC.

A very good race for me personally, getting onto the GC podium for only the second time this season. I won the U25s competition again, which has become a happy habit off late. The team struggled with just one 2nd place to show for on stage 3. But they did a fine job protecting me in the mountains, so I can't complain at all.
Preuba Villafranca-Ordiziako Klasika
A have a bad history with this race, with the injury here two years ago. Yet, the profile suits me and I can't seem to stay away. How would it play out this time?
I was chosen as the leader for Lotto and was one the bookies' favourite for the overall win. I stayed int he pack till the break got caught and launched an attack on the last climb with Intxausti and Pello Bilbao, with 10 km to ride. We were caught with 6 km to go. I wasn't dropped in the run-in and I did have the legs to sprint at the end. But it wouldn't be enough. Incredibly, Bilbao, despite his previous effort rode off the front in the uphill finish and took the victory. Simon Clarke finished 6th for Lotto while I finished 9th.

Another fine result for me and a better showing for the team with two top 10s. July has been a month to remember but not going to the Tour still is an irritation. Hopefully, next year this time, I'll be on the roads of France, leaving people in the dust in my first TDF outing.

More excellent results. What was Lotto thinking not taking you to the TdF? Though being the leader in the Austria Tour is not too shabby and the podium finish looks good on the palmares. I wonder if they showed some highlights on Indian television, tough to compete with cricket! |

@Ripley: Yup I agree. Riding the Tour would've been great. But I can't complain right now with the support the team has provided. Well the TDF is the only race shown live back home. I made the sports pages though. A miniscule article in the corner but atleast it's a start

"Do you believe you can become the GC leader for Lotto in GTs?"
I was caught off-guard by the sudden question. I had just finished writing my latest entry into my journal. I turned around to see the team manager sitting in the next seat. We were on the plane to Poland. The Tour de Pologne would be starting in three days.
"Pardon me", I said. I wanted to make sure I had heard him correctly.
"How soon can you become GC leader for Lotto in GTs?"
I contemplated an answer as I thought of the right thing to say. If I jumped at the chance, maybe he would tell me that I was being greedy and needed to be better prepared than I was currently. If I said that it would be ready in the future, he might think I was backing away from the challenge.
The team manager seemed to realize my conundrum.
"The team management believes that we've seen enough good things from your riding to back you as our GT leader in the not too distant future. However, there are some things we'd like you to work on."
"I understand...", is all I could reply.
"We'll be changing your training methods following our visit to Poland. We want you to start concentrating on skills needed to excel in three week races. We are satisfied with the progress we've seen so far and believe that Abhishek Sinha and Lotto Soudal are a perfect fit to mount a GC challenge in GTs."
"I'll do my best", I said. "I won't let the team down."
"I'm glad. Now show us that we've made a correct decision with you. We'd like a little taste of the future in Poland." He smiled warmly and left to go back to his seat. I was literally beaming.
It was decided then, Lotto were going to push me as their GT leader in the not too distant future (hopefully). It was a wonderful feeling to know that the team had so much confidence in me and investing heavily towards my progression.
When I started the race in Poland, I felt like I had wings!

A big month for me, probably the biggest for me since joining Lotto. The race in Poland is followed by the Vuelta later on in the month. Two huge chances for me to repay the faith shown in me by the team management.
I would lead Lotto in the GC here. The team wasn't very strong and I knew I would been my own mostly on the climbs.
Stage 1 was flat and for the sprinters. Geuens finished 10th for us.
Stage 2 was more of the same. A better result for Lotto with Stallaert finishing 6th and Geuens in 7th.
Stage 3 was a flat one too but there was disaster waiting for some riders. A huge crash half a dozen kilometres before the finish meant that half the field lost nearly two minutes to stage winner Gaviria. I stayed out of trouble while all favourites except Simon Yates and Leopold Konig lost time. Geuens finished 6th.
Stage 4 and the early break nearly caught out the peloton. We had to dig really deep and fly down the road to catch the break with just 2.5 km to go. The pack seemed to slow down for a few moments. I took my chance and attacked out of the peloton. With less than 2 km to go, I put everything into it and it paid off! My first win in a World Tour race!! I was up to 3rd in the GC.
The bookies put me down as one of the favourites for Stage 5. Buekens joined the break for us. This time the break was caught a long way from the finish. I followed the attacks of the other GC contenders but lost some time in the end. I finished 9th on the stage and moved down to 9th in the GC.
Stage 6 was another flat one with an undulating finish. The peloton were not able to catch the break, who won comfortably. The GC leaders finished in the main group and no there was no change.
Stage 7 was flatter still and the break won again.

Another high finish in the GC but no white jersey this time, Lopez pipping me to it by a mere 20 seconds. A huge first for me with my first win in a World Tour. A huge boost of confidence as I head on to the Vuelta. I hope I can do even better there.
