I realize that. You're right. But still, if you ride around in the Netherlands or in Belgium and then take your bike to France or Italy, it makes a big difference. Cars are king and cyclists had better watch out.
I feel the road is not for everyone.
While riding a bike will always have a certain risk involved, I still think my point is valid that many accidents could be avoided and that cycling safety is barbaric in this 21th century.
Just for argument's sake: the roads are a bit wider than a car. The speed limit is set for cars, so everyone expects to ride fast on the road. A cyclist on that particular road will be vulnerable. If he's lucky, a small shitty bike lane. Mostly just riding on the road. He's already at disadvantage but it gets worse. If it gets to an accident, guess who's safe inside his metal cage death machine and who'll end up in the ditch?
I think you see what I mean.
This debat shouldn't take away the tragedy of what happened, but it's never not worth having, imo. |

Was my interpretation too, and I agree as well. There's a clear difference between stating these kind of accidents happen and not caring about that very sad fact.
Some regions or countries have better circumstances for cyclists than others but there's no way this couldn't have happened in a certain one. I think everyone agrees efforts could prevent a lot of accidents, but not all of them. And some regions need attention when dealing with this issue than others. Not trying to roast you at all though Ollfardh.

Denmark is a huge cycling country as well, but riding your racer bike (especially fast which pros does) increases the likelihood of it happening.

Well exactly, that's my whole point. A rider has died and you just say "hey, these things happen". People do care about this because cyclists shouldn't get killed at this rate. Infrastructure, road quality, car drivers not giving a shit about cyclists, etc are all important issues that need to be addressed, in some countries more than others. I'm not going to start with a "what if" here, but don't make it seem so trivial that a cyclist dies.

I ride my bike, on average, 400 kilometres s week. Please don't pull this crap on me. This hurt me deeply, I've cried today, Michele is one of the nicest guys of the peloton.
But whatever you like it or not, no matter how much you improve safety, there is always a risk when you ride. A maniac CAN always run you down.
It actually really hurts me you are willing to go down this route and make it about me being a bad person or whatever, it really does. So typical.
If I misunderstood your post, I apologise. But you are the one making it personal here with your "so typical". No idea what I ever did to you to deserve such a comment.

You most certainly did misunderstand my post and I felt really bad when you tried to make it sound like I was a bad person and really didn't care that much. A man just died and not just someone we didn't know, one of the bigger riders the last 10 years who is one of the most well-respected and most liked in the peloton, a rider who have contributed greatly to some of the best stages we have seen in modern time - Pajares 2005, Aprica 2010, Gardeccia 2011 etc. And we just saw him yesterday!
I honestly think thats lack of decency on your part which is why I honestly got upset. I hope you can understand that. And I will stop it here, you can PM if you want to. |

Well I honestly though you lacked decency in your posts, that's why I commented. But apparently all a big misunderstanding. Moving on then
So to everyone, I do think cyclist safety, professional or amateur, is a big issue. A lot of riders are commenting about it right now, and it seems to be horrible to ride a bike in Italy (no personal experience, but maybe one of our Italian forum members can say something about this). I do hope something good can come out of this tragedy and some awareness is raised.

This is unreal. Sitting in a bus in Croatia with hangover and two hours of sleep, thinking I was there at that climb Scarponi won a few days ago and he died. Rest in peace. One of the finest guys in the peloton, a joker and fighter. My thoughts are with his family and friends. Personally I also loved playing with him in PCM. Honestly feel really sad. Giro should be held in his rememberance of course

Yoann Offredo was assaulted with a cutter and a baseball bat during a training ride with some friends today. According to his Facebook post, he has a fractured nose, a seriously damaged rib and bruises all over his body.

Maybe, but I think this can be a case of the aforementioned "car drivers not giving a shit about cyclists". For some drivers it's enough a cyclist taking his priority to go bananas.

So Froome is basically just making this stuff up in order to persuade Movi to switch to Valverde as their captain?
I don't really see it that way, but if Quintana still is very gppd after after the Giro, he will obviously still be the main man, but Valv will be around no matter what |
