20 years old Italian Lido Franzini riding on Astana U23,
Came 8th in U23 Liège–Bastogne–Liège 2/5 - his 2nd top ten of the year.
Very likely he will be signed on the Pro Tour team.

Ya - Aru have been and will be often be acting as lieutenant for Nibali. He is a great climber but he got a shitty ITT, but he will get some WT leads, TDF and Tour de Suisse mainly.

4/5-8/5 2016 Tour d'Azerbaïdjan 2.1
4/5 Stage 1/5 Baku Circuit 148.4 km
We got fine weather with no wind.
A lot of attacks and a very high pace in the peloton, makes for a hard start with noone allowed to get away, up to the first intermediate sprint.
Then we got the breakaway of the stage, it is Artem Nych (Gazprom), Michał Podlaski (Verva), Fatih Keles (Torku) and Marco Zamparella (Amore). They get a little more than 4 minutes.
The pursuit is led by IAM Cycling with some help from Paolo Tiralongo.
The break is over near the 20 km banner
It comes to the expected mass sprint, Astana lose the front with a tactical mistake.
The stage was won be Leigh Howard in front of Fabian Wegmann and Eduard Vorganov
Evaluation:
Overall:
This was the 1st season win by the 26 years old Australian Howard Leigh, and his first win since Trofeo Alcúdia back in 2013.
Velits (BMC) did not perform as well as the press expected, but it was a strange prediction as he is not the strongest sprinter, not sure the team is very disappointed.
Otherwise the race turned out as expected.
Astana:
Astana could have done a bit better, seemed there was a misunderstanding between the riders in the train, but anyway an ok result.

4/5-8/5 2016 Tour d'Azerbaïdjan 2.1
5/5 Stage 2/5 Baku – Ismayilly 184.8 km
Another fine day, sunny with a little more wind than yesterday, a gentle to a moderate breeze.
Several break are getting some limited TV time, amongst them also Astana’s Valerio Agnoli, but everything are brought back just before the mountains.
Some 130 km left.
60 km left, over the two first climbs at Ilanli and Tenha Mezar, KoM leader Artem Nych (Gazprom) and Jonas Tenbrock (Stölting) have built up a gap of 3’51 to the peloton.
In between we also got Muhammet Atalay (Torku) at 1’54”
Astana and IAM have been leading the peloton, but from here Astana set Malacarna, Agnoli and Lutsenko in front, pulling very hard, they want to bring back the breakaway before the climb to “Xasidara”.
At the start of the climb Nych and Tenbrock has about a minute, then Tiralongo accelerates with Fuglsang on wheel.
32 km to the line.
The breakaway is over
Tiralongo has got fine legs, but Fuglsang has a very bad day he can’t hold wheel and gets reeled in by a favorite group of 28 riders.
Darwin Atapuma (BMC) sense the weakness of Astana, he accelerate away from the group.
Fuglsang is in pain, Tiralongo has to fall back and help him.
Also Kristijan Đurasek (Lampre), Sylvester Szmyd and Victor De La Parte both CCC Sprandi, has started to distance the Astana riders.
The four riders in front passes the top with about 40” to Fuglsang and Tiralongo.
Astana decides to let Tiralongo chase alone, to minimize his loss as Fuglsang seem done.
Darwin Atapuma win in Ismayilly, in front of Kristijan Đurasek.
Paolo Tiralongo comes in 5th at 48”, Fuglsang 7th in 1’49.
Evaluation:
Overall:
This was the 1nd season win by the 28 years old Colombian John Darwin Atapuma , and his first win since a stage in Tour de Pologne back in 2013.
Today’s big loser was Astana, all the other top teams did fine.
Astana:
On paper 5 & 7 is a good result, but not in this case, was a bad day for the team, ironically Fuglsang’s bad form was the only comfort, as it suggests he may be able to do better in the coming day.
Will be a tough decision to choose if Jakob Fuglsang is still the right leader, with Paolo Tiralongo over a minute ahead.

6/5-28/5 2016 Giro d'Italia
6/5 Stage 1/21 Apeldoorn – Apeldoorn ITT 10.3 km
Not the best weather today, very clouded and wind speeds at around 40 km/h.
The first to set an impressive time is Manuel Quinziato (BMC) 13’22, Quinziato start in the first wave of riders, but beating Jonas Van Genechten (IAM) with 38”, might be a time good enough to win the stage.
Also starting quite early we see Katusha’s Anton Vorobyev 2nd best, 12” behind Quinziato
Very surpricingly we see unregarded Serghei Tvetcov (Androni – Sidermec) overtaking Nicola Ruffoni on the route and coming in 2nd, just 9” behind Quinziato.
Danny Van Poppel and Stefan Küng sets relative bad times 30-40 sec after Quinziato
Svein Tuft (Orica) set a good time 3nd 10” after Quinziato
It has started to rain just as Nicolas Roche (Sky) starts his race, he loses about a minute.
Despite the rain 25 years old Belgian Yves Lampaert (Etixx - Quick Step) set 2nd best in the same time as Quinziato, a brilliant result.
The rain has stopped again, Dylan Van Baarle (Cannondale) 3rd 8” behind Quinziato
Patrick Gretsch new 3rd best, 4” behind Quinziato
Then we got a new best stage favorite Rohan Dennis (BMC) 13’16, 6” faster than Quinziato
Even though we are just half way trough the stage, the podium wont change after this. Rohan Dennis win the prologue in Apeldoorn, in front of Manuel Quinziato and Yves Lampaert
Vincenzo Nibali was the very last starter, he had a disapointing prologue finishing 24th losing 33” to Dennis.
Evaluation:
Overall:
This was the 3rd season win from the 25 years old Australian Rohan Dennis, after he won a stage in Volta Ciclista a Catalunya in March and a stage in Giro del Trentino – Melinda 22/4.
Let’s take a look at the position between the race favorites:
4 | Rigoberto Urán Urán | Cannondale Pro Cycling Team | +00:06 | 13 | Richie Porte | BMC Racing Team | +00:20 | 15 | Wilco Kelderman | Team LottoNL - Jumbo | +00:26 | 19 | Roman Kreuziger | Tinkoff | +00:29 | 24 | Vincenzo Nibali | Astana Pro Team | +00:33 | 31 | Andrey Amador | Movistar Team | +00:38 | 80 | Steven Kruijswijk | Team LottoNL - Jumbo | +00:59 | 119 | Mikel Landa Meana | Team Sky | +01:10 | 123 | Romain Bardet | Ag2r La Mondiale | +01:11 | 144 | Fabio Aru | Astana Pro Team | +01:16 |
Astana:
Not a good stage seen with Astana eyes, but in the GC only Rigoberto Urán has a notably advantage

Honestly not a bad start at all, don't think Nibali is supposed to beat guys like Porte or Kelderman in this kind of stages.
