Settimana Coppi e Bartali

Yet another stage race, this time in Italy. A complete 5 day stage race with 1 of each of they key disciplines, TT, TTT, flat, hilly and mountain. The early season has been fruitful for the Petronas squad minus the Tour of Taiwan which is a good sign as this is once again a sponsor objective.

Stage 1

Preview:
A stage which is in large flat, but contains a few hills at the middle to end of the race.

Parcours:
Spoiler
imageshack.com/a/img924/9965/bjsDRP.png

Race:
A very short stage being only 100km which should see a sprint and some good attacking riding.

At the top of the 1st category climb the break have reached a 2 minute advantage with 30km to go, most of it being descending.

A very un-organised chase ensues with the break still having 1 minute with 12 km to go.

Finale:
An absolutely amazing lead-out, but an awful sprint(forgot to press sprint with Kroupis). Drucker ends up 5th and we would have won for sure if Kroupis just went out of his wheel and sprinted, but the winner for the day was Richeze.

Stage 2

Preview:
The TTT, the most dreaded day stage of the race.....(simulated). Completely flat, but with only 1 TT engine in the team with Ludvigsson, it will be challenging. It is only 11km so we hope to limit our losses.

Parcours:
Spoiler
imageshack.com/a/img922/7042/YWctUx.png

Race:
Orica Greenedge takes the win, but an excellent finish for our lads finishing in 8th place only losing to WT Teams and even beating Cannondale. At the end we lost a minimal 49 seconds.

Stage 3

Preview:
A mountainous stage which is classed as a hilly one. It includes the same category climb. A stage for the climbers and GC men looking to win this race.

Parcours:
Spoiler

Race:
The breakaway have a huge lead with 3/4 of the stage gone. 8 minutes up the road and they have pretty much secured the stage win.

The final climb have gone and the pretenders have been separated from the contenders A front group of 6 elite riders have escaped with 2 of our riders in the group. The break will win the day as they have 4 and a half minutes with the final climb over. It could dangerous up in front with a few solid climbers.

Finale:
Carlos Jose Ochoa wins the stage 4 minutes in front of the GC group. Zeits is dropped and now the group is depleted to 4 riders.Majka eventually rides first from the main group with Meintjes finishing 3rd in it, and overall 8th. No time loss, but gains over several other riders.

Stage 4

Preview:
The only mountain stage of the Coppi e Bartali begs a GC battle. The GC is at the minute is a bit of a mixed bag as most of the break from the previous stage is leading the overall classification.

Parcours:
Spoiler
imageshack.com/a/img924/2131/6imAXO.png

Race:
A group of 7 venture up the road in the early stages of the race.

AG2R take charge up the front as they have the yellow jersey, Sebastien Minard although isn't the greatest climber.

M.Belkov has a dig with 50km to go which is a little concerning , but the pack begin the chase.
imageshack.com/a/img921/4669/4w2pQt.png

We decide to put the hammer down with Cheng Ji pacing the break back to only 2 and a half minutes.

The peloton if you can call it that are reduced to 13 riders, but soon R.Majka goes onto the attack on the downhill. Zeits is sent to pace him back.
imageshack.com/a/img924/3717/1E0w62.png

The break has also been reduced to 30 seconds.

As the break is caught, Tinkoff run away with this. Majka has Petrov in front of him while the break has been decimated.

He goes again! Majka is looking imperious.

Stage 5

Preview:
The final stage of the Coppi e Bartali is a TT, 15km long, in the town of Crevalcore. The podium fight is still on as 3rd to 5th is within 16 seconds. The overall GC though will go to Rafal Majka.

Parcours:
imageshack.com/a/img921/558/Kai50A.png

Race:
With only so little in it, the stage is set to be a tense won.

A trio of Petronas riders start from 94th to 92nd, will they make an impact?

Drucker goes through the first intermediate in 5th which is a touch surprising for the sprinter.

Kroupis at the last puts in a ride good enough for 5th while Drucker comes home directly after him in 2nd, but 15 seconds back.

Drucker is still in 2nd, while Teklehaimanot finishes 14th so far.

The barrage of Petronas riders begin as we have 4 riders in the top 20 as Mat Senan commences his TT. Ludvigsson begins directly after him.

Oooh, Ludvigsson finishes one second, off now leader L.Westra(what a wonderful career unfortunately retiring just recently).

Meintjes is now off the starters ramp looking to get that illusive podium spot.

Meintjes finishes the day in 23rd overall, 40 seconds back, but will it be enough, to move up the standings while Tobias finishes a close 2nd on the stage.

That's the wrap up from Italy. Meintjes, very unlucky to miss out on a 4th place(1 second) and a podium place barely. In fact he was only 12 seconds back from 2nd place. A good result for the team. considering the last race.

The next race will be Gent-Wevelgem. Jempy Drucker's opportunity......

Preview:
The race from Gent to Wevelgem is always a cycling spectacular, as you sometimes see crazy winds (Thomas blown into the grass previously) and amazing breakaways succeed as the cobbles sectors are less exaggerated in this classic. It's a race for mainly cobblestone specialists to perform well, but the stronger sprinters can also make the finish as well. An opportunistic attack could also be on the cards.

Parcours:
imageshack.com/a/img924/9890/6eSvss.png

Race:
The race starts with a flurry of attack including some of our own, but none are able to get away. The break are finally established with 30km to go, strongest riders are Simone Ponzi and Nikolai Trusov.

The race is split up the second cobblestone sector as Trek are on the attack. Drucker is caught in the 2nd group along with several others, while cancellara approaches the break.

imageshack.com/a/img921/6236/qBmXur.png
3 men at the front are Cancellara, Kristoff and Boom meanwhile, Drucker launches an attack from a group behind.

Kristoff takes the win at Gent! While behind Drucker is about to launch his sprint.
imageshack.com/a/img921/6076/DpPmwP.png

Drucker had great legs throughout the day and showcased this with his wonderful sprint in front of riders such as Nizzolo, Hushovd and Breschel. He finishes 4th, the best of the rest essentially. A real good showing for him, Porsev as well rode a superlative race to be in that group. A special mention for Toms Skujins who toiled hard, chasing down numerous riders when there was a lull in preceedings who in turn earns himself what looks like a top 25 place.

Jempy Drucker showed the world what he could do if he was given more chances winning the sprint for 4th by a huge margin. Our team supported him well with two outstanding rides from Porsev and Skujins.

We hope to carry our momentum onto the Route Adelie Vitre in France. We will see you then.

A French one day semi-classic around flattish roads. Should be suited to the sprinters, but the punchers could also have there way. As you can see from the favourite list, it is predicted to be a harder race than expected which could go well for us, as we bring a strong team here.

Parcours:

Race:
A group of 3 make the early breakaway bonanza which includes 3 very competent climbers including Rafael Valls.

Europcar and FDJ are the main pace-setters in the peloton as they have 2 of the biggest favourites T.Gallopin and A.Roux.

The pace is now upped by several other teams, who now leave the peloton with only 71 riders, Petronas are positioned well up front.

Devolder launches a move with 10km to go.

Cheng Ji attacks few km's later, but the victory is nearly a certainty now for Stijn Devolder.

Race:
The break left off as soon as the gun went off, as Rwandan Adrien Niyonshuti was joined by Jasper De Buyst and Ben King.

The break is briskly caught with 15km to go.

Soon after, the peloton are split into two. Only 60 remain with 10km to go as our riders are all up there.

With 2km to go Manan delivers Porsev perfectly, but will it be too early?

Race:
The breakaway took a while developing, but in the end 5 remain up front including Daniel Teklehaimanot from Petronas.

As the day develops, the break is caught, but Dani Navarro throws in an attack 25km from the finish. Senan could be leading us with good form and Park will be our sprinter if it comes down to a sprint as Drucker and Kroupis have poor form and are saving their legs for later.

Everything is brought together with 16km to go.

Attack! Wout Poels attacks on the downhill of the final climb. M.Senan (Petronas) and C.Gautier marks him.

imageshack.com/a/img924/9688/CkYtQ4.png

With 3km to go the escapees are caught.

Finale:

Park takes the win in front of his own Petronas team-mate Senan. Another un-organised sprint which always provides for interesting results. The South Korean takes his first professional win, in France, while Skujins and Buts also finishes in 4th and 7th. Utter domination!

Race:
The early flyers go off, with not much success up until the 30km mark as 5 riders venture up the road, them all being not the biggest names.

The flat terrain is more suited to the bigger teams as they can send riders to the front without hurting their own leaders so much as BMC and Astana chase the break down as we head into the first of the cobbles sectors.

The first few cobble sectors are negotiated with fair ease, but the peloton has split into two as there is only a 30 man peloton with 30km to go, Petronas having 3 riders up there.

The group is further reduced to 20 as they finish the penultimate cobble sectors.

Monsalve attacks! Monsalve had spent enough time in the peloton and now had to go. Skujins was embedded in the pack, so he decides to go himself.

Now with the cobbles coming thick and fast, Monsalve is caught with the pack being 15 man strong.

3 more riders drop off from the harsh pace and tempo set by BMC and only Skujins left in the bunch!

Finale:
The bunch kick is sent into action by R.Navardauskas, but is overhauled at the line by nearly the whole group.Thor Hushovd ends up taking the win with a final kick to remember in front of B.Bozic and B.de Backer. Our own hopes faded at the final with Skujins not being able to match the pace of the pack. He finishes in 12th place.

A shorter stage race that is usually a pre-cursor to the Giro d'italia is an interesting one for the Petronas lads. We are sending in a climber's team looking for a result with Louis Meintjes. As expected though, the race has a number of huge names all vying for the win. With 3 mountain stages, it could sure shake up things.
