 Paris - Nice (WT)Stage 8/8, 9.7 kms MTT We are back at the foot of Col d'Èze, nothing but a stone's throw away from many editions of Paris-Nice have been decided already, despite it not being a brutal climb (see profile) at all. The hardest parts are right at the foot and directly after the intermediate point, so let's get started! It's been a crash-free edition so all GC pretty much ended up inside the top 20 by now. That meant a lot of lesser climbers were to start before them. Diego Ochoa didn't have his best race so far but the time he set was the fastest at that point. And quite a lot of riders failed to defeat it. A sudden twist occured as a former hour record holder in the person of Matthias Brändle showed up to kick some ass outclimbing riders such as Marc Soler and Cattaneo to top the provisional results. Ochoa then had slipped down some places already, yet remaining inside the top 10. The best 40 riders were about to start as Jonathan Klever concluded his time trial too. He did fairly good and was faster than Ochoa. By one single second only though, but that was enough to achieve a provisional 7th place as he had required 37 seconds more than Matthias Brändle. Even Colombia's former TT champion Henao lacked power to beat the Austrian. Eventually El Imbatido (aged 39!) himself would have to step up to get him out of the hotseat after Meintjes'd failed to do so earlier. He would however not last too long as quickly Geraint Thomas claimed the first place. Afterwards he would suffer the same come-and-go fate as Tom Dumoulin was 13 seconds faster compared to the Welshman. But of course our main goal today was trying to at least hold on to our 6th place in the GC. To do so Vandenborre couldn't lose more than 11 seconds to Nibali. The others behind and in front of him were probably out of reach. At the intermediate point they had almost identical times. In the meantime Adam Yates was putting in a great performance and created a gap of 20" between him and Dumoulin. At the finish Nibali and Vandenborre finished one second off each other's times, but both would miss out on a top ten spot as they lost over 50" to Adam Yates. For Kelderman, it all was a matter of parrying Van Garderen's attempt to snatch his yellow jersey, but the American failed to deliver, finishing in 5th place. The race leader finished with the second best time, slightly faster than Vuillermoz. The latter moved from 9th to 7th thanks to his third time and ended only 5 seconds behind Vandenborre's 6th place. Tirreno - Adriatico (WT) Stage 5/7, 229.3 kms Today's assignment is a second competitor for the title of queen stage of this year's edition, along with yesterday's stage. Tinkoff should again take charge of simply controlling the race but if they are really up for it, a lot of riders could be scattered all over the place by the end of today. A well-stuffed breakaway with solid climbers such as Edoardo Zardini, Reichenbach, Rabottini, Barbin, Gastauer and Agnoli took off early. They must have been hoped that Tinkoff would need a moment to catch their breath after yesterday's demonstration, but nothing was less true. At the first-category climb of Sasso Tetto, Kevin Dowe was the first to lose contact with the breakaway. They had accelerated earlier in order to keep their advantage, that had never been more than 3', alive. Vain move though, as Tinkoff was in for seriously intense racing once more. That bad news for us as somehow Ion Izagirre lost his place near the front due to a sudden push by a now unchained Tinkoff squad. Coming back'd undoubtably take much out of him with only one guy by his side. Meanwhile this picture of the front proved how truly comfortable Julian Alaphilippe's situation was: not everyone can say they have a rider in a rainbow jersey who is only controlling the pace for him in their team. Then all of a sudden the pace got dropped and four riders grew a gap: Contador, Froome, Fuglsang and A. Yates, now sitting in GC fourth. Sam Oomen tried to bridge at first, but Tinkoff took charge again when the gap was at one minute. Oomen got caught quickly and on their way to the top only Izagirre managed to keep up with a rushing Tinkoff trio. In the descent the two groups merged again, as Alaphilippe's helpers tried to prevent the riders in the E2 group from making it back to them. Oddly enough the engines of that very E2 group were wearing a yellow Tinkoff shirt as well. In the end several riders did manage to complete their bridge: Daniel Martin, Aru, Formolo, TJ Slagter and Lutsenko. The latter decided to attack as soon as they had joined the front group. Despite giving it various shots he didn't stand a dog's chance against a simply superior Tinkoff whole. Accelerations required to reel Lutsenko back in caused multiple riders to get left behind by the E1 group again. At the last climb the fans saw two riders made very clear who were the strongest. After having responded to all of Yates' attacks, Alaphilippe tried to reverse roles, but they would reach the ultimate summit jointly. Yet in the descent they looked at each other too much and first a group with Contador came back and then a second group with Izagirre did it same, both having bridge a one-minute gap. Suddenly, 7 riders were in the running for the stage win while approaching a dangling reddish kite. But most of them were so drained they were already delighted to finish in the same time as the winner. Adam Yates took a well-deserved win ahead of Alaphilippe and Contador, while Ion Izagirre made us very happy by coming home in sixth place and moving into fourth in the GC. Tirreno - Adriatico (WT) Stage 6/7, 174.0 kms The final stage stage before the concluding time trial was here. Shorter than the previous two by 50 kms, a dominant team could still give many guys a hard time at the local circuit near the Adriatic coast in Macerata. Really good riders had lost time at earlier stages due to crashes or bad luck. Some among them decided to join the breakaway and try to grab a last possible chance of winning a giveaway World Tour stage. In that group we had Kreuziger, Rolland, Bosswell, Rabottini, Agnoli and Barbin, who wore the KoM jersey instead of actual leader Alaphilippe. Even though the breakaway once more didn't get a huge gap, the pace in the pack was not that high. That would change in the final 60 km and counter attackers Bakelants and Geschke were the first who'd realise the predetermined plan of catching the break was a losing proposition. Tinkoff tore the pack apart once again, using the double climb in each lap. And in the last lap the pack had been decreased to some 15 riders. Koen Bouwman and Petr Vakoč were the last who tried to avoid the sprint, but again Tinkoff proved that there was simply no point in trying. Yates led a small E1 group up the final climb yet Alaphilippe seemed to be ready to kick away for another stage win. And Ion Izagirre could have a bigger shot at winning a stage than he had earlier in this race. While Yates' pace was too high for Izagirre, Alaphilippe was ready to launch a final shot that would help him get past the two in front of him. And so he did, showing who's boss this year. Yates and Aru joined him on the podium, as the latter gained some more seconds Izagirre, who will have to dig deep to gain a full minute in tomorrow's 9 km time trial. We've been great at doing what we can in this race, and that's following the slightly better guys and aiming for the highest GC place possible

Tirreno - Adriatico (WT) Stage 7/7, 9.3 kms Roughly 9.5 kilometers to go and then the 2019 Race of the Two Seas will be over. The GC battle wasn't too thrilling but still it was far from a boring race, and bagging GC 4th would be far more than we hoped for. Youngster Miles Scotson, still only aged 25, became the first rider to complete the ride in under 12 minutes. Quite a manner to display, once more, why it is exactly him who is considered a unique time trial talent. Only a couple of minutes later though, Taylor Phinney proved that he is ready for the upcoming cobbled classics. The man, fifth in last year's Ronde van Vlaanderen, beat Scotson's chrono by another 13 seconds. Phinney's name remained at the top of the list for the rest of the day, while only Kwiatkowski would ride faster than Scotson too. Izagirre kept up a good pace in the first half but felt he could not keep it up and had to slow down in the second half. While he just made it into the top ten, Aru slipped past A. Yates to make it a 1-2 for Tinkoff in extremis. Nice pace. It's always pleasant to get past PN and TA, for me it sometimes feels like there's no progress with two races at the same time. Looking forward to MSR. Good luck, and nice 4th for Ion. |

Thanks feel you about two race going on at the same time, but some good results have made up for it

Under the circumstances it was the best result possible indeed , let's score some more WT points in Sanremo to create a buffer for the cobbled races. We probably won't grab too many points there

Milano - Sanremo (WT) Monument 1/5, 296.3 kms Racing this Primavera for the very first time means a third race among the Monuments can be added to the annals of our team. Hopefully that will not be the sole reason to remember this cloudy day in March 2019. Some bigger breakaways did not proceed and eventually only three (!) riders were what the break of the day was made up of. Near the top of the Passo del Turchino the gap of Gianni Moscon, Stephan Tricot and Chad Haga was shrinking: more than 10 had become about 7 minutes. We are very sorry to have to tell you that pretty much nothing occured before the Tre Capi. At the Capo Cervo, Niki Terpstra launched a very short-lived attack. No luck for him, but it was a sign that some among the riders disliked the slackness hanging in the majority of the peloton. With around 35 kms to go, Pello Bilbao tried his luck too. He was just as (un)lucky as Terpstra had been before. Ian Stannard wanted to go with him at first, but the thing he really did was bringing an entire pack back to the wheel of Bilbao. The initial BOTD was about to give up too. At the Cipressa the breakaway stranded but that's about it. We thought we'd see no more actions before the Poggio when Benoot accelerated. Again it was a futile move, but that didn't discourage Alexey Lutsenko and Lars Boom to attack. Guessing the outcome wasn't hard though... The Poggio climb itself gave birth to a mouse, but the strong teams set a more than solid pace. It was high enough to prevent new attacks and made Barbero struggle. Even though he was still sitting near the front, he had close to nothing left to follow when a Movistar duo gave a push. Wouter Wippert did his best to follow Fernando Gaviria but no doubt he would not be able to keep up with him all the way to the finish. With the Via Roma only two corners away from them, the Colombian looked good for the most considerable win of his still strikingly youthful career. And he held on, and so did Wippert for the second place. Italy's honor was saved by Matteo Pelucchi, who sprinted to the last podium place while Carlos Barbero finished way down the field, far from the top 10.
