Easy. Finishing the race in the lesser time of the 198 starting riders

How on earth can Aru win Giro in that start list?

Easy. Finishing the race in the lesser time of the 198 starting riders

It's simple physics and rules of cycling and all that stuff Pfft

First up 2016 review:
Spoiler
- Only one of Degenstache and AK-47 take a monument
Right in that one wouldn't, but neither did Pfft
- Valv takes a Grand Tour, I'll go out on a limb and say Giro, but definitely adds it to his podium collection
Added to podium, no win
- Cancellara podiums a monument but doesn't win (just beat out fanboy triple + top 5 worlds RR)
Bang on (unfortunately) Grin
- Dumoulin and Dennis both take a week long stage race but underwhelm in GTs, not just mountains either
Nope to the first part, Dennis kind of but Dumoulin was very good
-Gerrans takes his last WT win but it isn't a monument
Yet to be seen, but could be absolutely true Pfft
- Valverde has another amazing season but shows signs of less consistency but still the same class
Nah Pfft
- Quintana has form to win a GT and shows it by winning TDF but falter rest of season (excluding a Tirenno win a la this year) by working entire season trying to beat Froome
Yes he has form, no he didn't win Tour, no he didn't falter outside of Tour, yes he won an March-April stage race Pfft
- Froome takes TDF-Rio TT double and nearly triple with RR but isn't punchy enough
Yes, almost, debatab;e
- Nibz takes Rio RR
No but close
- Uran will show old form with a top 5 in a GT
Showed good form, but only 7th in the Giro
- Hesjedal has some stellar GT moments in stages but can't cut it overall
Can't cut it at all Pfft
- Valv takes an Ardennes classic
Yes
- Boonen and Cancellara both a part of the battles at the front in one of the cobbled monuments
Not together Sad
- San Remo is won by nailbiting Poggio attack
Nope
- Both Bennetts take thier first ever GT stage
Sam crashed unfortunately but wouldn't have I guess, George had a breakthrough and top 10s but no stage
- Sagan takes a stage with his green jersey but is still mostly unlucky 2nds and 3rds
Green yes, stage yes, but multiple wins, plus some podiums
- Kittel is back but not as good as 2014
Yeah
- Crosswinds mess things up in Doha (just pleeeeeeease)
Yeah
- Zakarin doesn't get caught doping
Yep
- Chaves/Nibz/Valv podium at the Giro
I'm an actual sorcerer Pfft
- Bertie and Froome within a minute of each other at TDF
Lol no
- Another Yates WT classic win, as well as 2 GT stage wins and a KoM fight
No classic, one stage, no KoM fight but very good GC!
- I manage to follow women's cycling enough to make some fairly clued up predictions for this year.
I didn't even follow men's as much as I'd have liked :/
- Van Aert still doesn't win Worlds
Nope
- Bevin makes strong showings in HC races for Cannandale and puts in some decent leadout and domestique WT work but no personal glory
OK season, not that great but good WT debut
- I make so many of these predictions a more complicated one (not: Valv takes Ardennes classic because that's easy Pfft) is bang on (not likely)
No not really
- Peter Sagan takes a god damn monument
Yeah he did Pfft

- Kruiswijk doesn't podium Giro
- Chaves podiums both GTs he attends
- Boonen has a fairytale monument win
- Pelizzoti is crap
- Pellizzoti is good but obviously doping
- Ewan and Gaviria are still very good but can't quite break into the elite group of Cav et al
- Sagan takes another monument but not 3x WC
- Nibali and Chaves both finish on the Giro podium but the order is swapped from 2016
- Quintana is either at his best in the Giro and top 5 at the most in the Tour, or he holds himself back on podiums, but doesn't win, both.
- George Bennett continues 2016's form
- Groenewegen takes a GC stage
- Mollema and Contador both suck in the Tour but only because Mollema top 5s the Giro
- Valverde repeats 2015 minus one Ardennes classic and only top 10s the Tour
- Tony Martin cries and drools in Dusseldorf
- Rolland gets stage win + KoM in the Tour
- Adam Yates top 5s a GT, Simon Yates does well in a multitude of WT races
- Kreuziger top 10s Ardennes classics for himself and a GT in support of Yates/Chaves
- Aru still isn't as good as he showed he could be
- Chavanel and Voeckler both do well in their last seasons (that's a prediction is itself), at least at the Tour, but only one claims a stage
- Pantano wins stuff
- Froome also Wins
- Toon Aerts beats one of VDP and WVA in the WC
- The Tour will be much closer than previous years and will be one by Froome or a daring attack
- No mechanical doping busts
- Zakarin doesn't get caught doping
- Omar Fraile makes it 3x Vuelta KoM
- GVA triumphs in his rivalry with Sagan, taking stages and RVV
- EBH wins Roubaix plus lots of other things
- Cummings wn a GT stage plus 3 other WT wins
- Bardet podiums the Tour again and if my prediction about a daring attack comes true, it's him
- Once again I'll try: I make so many of these predictions a more complicated one is bang on (not likely) Pfft
- Scarponi is again an amazing domestique (thanks for reminder below Aquarius Pfft)
Yes, a lot of these are me hoping for stuff, but they are realistic things. don't believe me, here's one more Pfft:
- Chaves wins TDU, Herald Sun, Fleche, Giro, 2nd at Vuelta to a surprising old average rider (Horner comeback?), Lombardia, Velo D'Or, World Champs, etc.

How on earth can Aru win Giro in that start list?

There are two ways to explain it. First the long one

He won one year ago La Vuelta. The startlist had Quintana, Valverde, Chaves, Froome, Dumoulin, Purito, Majka, Nibali, Landa, Meintjes... Except for Contador, almost the best 6-8 GT riders in that moment were riding that race. And Aru won it. If he did it once, why can't he do it again

And the short one: He has Scarponi as domestique

Quintana rode tour and came 2nd
Dumoulin targeted Tour and was not a top 6-8 GC riders
Rodriguez rode tour aand won two stages
Chaves was not a top 6-8 GC rider at the time
Froome won tour, a stage and abandoned race
Majka rode tour and won a stage
Nibali rode tour, won a stage + came 4th and didn't finish Vuelta because of DQ
Landa was his teammate and worked for him Wink
Meintjes was nowhere near a top 6-8 GC rider, even now

I'm sensing a pattern Wink

Quintana got sick and Froome abandoned that Vuelta, nobody was on their best level, probably apart from J-Rod. It remains to be seen just how good he actually is after his 2016-season... his Giro, despite winning two stages, wasn't that impressive either.

Let's start with 2016:

Spoiler
- Van der Poel will win the world championships after the Belgians fail to cooperate.
Exactly the opposite, but not complaining
- Stannard wins Omloop, Cavendish wins Kuurne
Nope
- Sagan beats Kristoff and Degenkolb to win San Remo
Nope
- Terpstra wins Dwars Door Vlaanderen
Nope
- E3 win be won by a sprinter you wouldn't expect (Bouhanni, Coquard, Lobato?)
It was an unexpeted winner, though it's hard to qualify Kwiatek as a sprinter
- Gent-Wevelgem goes to Kittel
Hahahaha
- Cancellara wins Ronde Van Vlaanderen, taking the record
Close but no cigar
- Boonen wins Paris-Roubaix, taking the record and immediatly retires
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUU..
- Gilbert wins Brabantse Pijl, but can't make the top 10 in the other Ardennes races
Not even that
- Van Avermaet wins the Gold Race
Nope, as he was injured
- Valverde takes Fleche Wallonne
Hey, I got one right!
- Martin and Alaphillipe make it a 1-2 in Liege-Bastogne-Liege
Nope
- Nibali wins the Giro pretty much uncontested
He wins, but it wasn't easy
- Quintana breaks Froome in the third week to win le Tour
Unfortunately not
- Benoot gets his first win in San Sebastian
Wasn't his season yet
- Dennis wins the olympic TT, road race goes to a Sanchez
Even better!
- Vuelta goes to Contador, who hasn't done much in the rest of the year
Not even the Vuelta..
- Tom Dumoulin wins both the RR and the TT at the world, but realises he'll never win a GT
Nope and nope again
- Nibali wins Lombardia again
Rosa is Nibali enough?
- Boeckmans wins Paris-Tours
Alas

So will have to do slightly better this year (again Pfft )
- Toon Aerts to win the cyclocross worlds after Wout and Mathieu hold another staring contest
- Sagan wins both Omloop and Kuurne
- We'll see a Poggio attack win San Remo, maybe GVA?
- Dwars Door Vlaanderen gets a really big winner
- Boonen wins E3 after beating Sagan in a sprint
- We get a normal Gent-Wevelgem and Gaviria wins in a bunch sprint
- Team Sky sets up a train on the Kwaremont and wins Tour of Flanders, no one is happy
- Vanmarcke wins Roubaix and cries after the finish
- Brabantse Pijl will be won by a convicted doper
- Etixx does not win the Gold Race because Gilbert chases down Martin
- Valverde wins Fleche (stick with what you know!)
- Wellens wins LBL after a big solo
- Quintana wins the Giro again, but disappoints in le Tour
- Froome wins le Tour again in the most boring race ever
- San Sebastian goes to a Yates
- Vuelta is due an old suspicious winner needing a new contract, how's Valverde doing with his contract?
- Sagan wins another WC after not taking the lead until the final 20m, Martin takes the TT again
- Gaviria wins Paris-Tours in a proper sprint this time
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.
