 Roma Maxima (1.1) 185 kms Now is the time for one of the few races outside the Low Countries that still features cobbles. After a longer relatively flat section 4 rather short climbs await the riders. That is before they will hit some sections of the Via Appia, the Queen of the Long Roads that once was a very important connection between the majestic city of Rome and the heel of the Boot. Realising that he's got exactly what it takes to perform on both hills and cobbles, Ion Izagirre tried a few attacks early after the starting signal, but the bunch didn't want him to lose sight of him that early in the race. In the end his brother Gorka was allowed a gap, along with Bardiani's youngster Alessio Taliani. The Italian was given a very hard time at every single climb but caught up with our Basque rider in the descents. That way the duo hit the first of 8 cobbled sections jointly, with 80 kms left on the counter. The time gap of the duo had come down from over 7 minutes to an advantage of slightly more than 3 and a half minutes. Only two sections further, the worst possible thing happened: Taliani had to let go of Gorka, who'd then been pacing for several kilometers. But sadly the bigger teams start chasing fast, triggered by Etixx' duo of Campenaerts and Bouvry. Gorka eventually didn't stand a chance and a big bunch approached the two last cobbled sections at a high pace... And then we saw a first and a very strong attacker: Katusha's Adriano Malori. Now inside the final 10 kms only one guy could maybe bridge... And that rider was one of ours, Federico Zurlo, as one Italian tried to chase down another. Both riders seemed to come very close to hitting the wall at the false flat section just before passing under the red kite... Sadly, Federico stranded in Malori's wheel and missed out on his very first win as a pro rider.  Paris - Nice (WT)Stage 2/8, 195 kms Well, I guess stages don't get any more flat than this one is. Still many flat stages have ended with surprising attacks or echelons, so it'll be a matter of staying focused when trying to protect our sprinter MartÃnez. But before that there was one KoM sprint to win out there. As expected several French riders riding for French teams attacked first.And finally, Cofidis' Benjamin Thomas outsprinted FDJ's Julien Antomarchi and he'll be wearing the polka dot mountain jersey during the third stage. The Frenchmen then got joined by Mikhail Ignatiev and Lotto-Soudal's Jean-Albert Carnivali. Together they extended the gap to a maximum of 8 minutes, but soon the teams of the main sprinters took things into their own hands. Hence why none of the four riders out front should've started thinking of grabbing a stage win in this year's Race to the Sun. The high pace caused some minor splits in the pack, and one of these terminated MartÃnez's ambitions for today's stage. Apart from Cerezo, nobody was still present near the front and then already we knew none of our guys in green would contest for the stage win or a top 10 finish. In the end MartÃnez would be our top finisher in 33rd place as Arnaud Démare beat Kittel, Sagan and Cort Nielsen on home soil. Paris - Nice (WT) Stage 3/8, 170.8 kms Third stage already and still not many difficulties will have to be faced, apart from a few insignificant bumps in the final third of today's stage. Our very own Diego Ochoa was the first to attack but did not have any luck. After numerous tens of kilometers, finally 3 guys got some space: NehemÃas Padilla, Giro stage winner Nicola Boem and Michael Van Staeyen. Together they contested 2 intermediate sprints, both won by the Belgian, who's the fastest if things were to end with a sprint-Ã -trois. Even though he's not the weakest climber of the group, he'd disappear at the first and only categorised climb of the day. Van Staeyen claimed points and prize money at the KoM sprint too. He pursued the break of the day along with Boem only, but in the conclusive 10 kms they faded. Despite not being part of our sprint train too often, Cerezo and Ochoa tried their very best to keep MartÃnez as close to the front as possible. But still he did have to launch his shot earlier than the other sprinters... Again the final outcome was exciting as IAM's Elia Viviani won a very close sprint over Kittel and Wippert. Would it be possible to give some insight as to who are the, let's say, ten best riders in every discipline (Mountains, Hills, Cobbles, Sprint and TT)? Would give some idea about who are expected to win the big races, now that you're in the WT.

Paris - Nice (WT) Stage 4/8, 177.1 kms Practically halfway through this year's edition and the most challenging part is still yet to come. Today featured some possibilities for guys who are interested in the KoM ranking, but the stage should normally end in a bunch sprint for punchers as we are talking a heavily false flat sector. Over 10 riders did not allow some seriously threatening clouds to keep them from attacking, but only five of them made it into the break of the day . Baptiste Planckaert, Niki Terpstra, Gianluca Ocanha, Florian Maître and Alexis Gougeard were today's escapees. That breakaway battle was the most riveting or least monotone passage in a long while. That's until multiple riders hit the tarmac at the same time. Main victim of the crash was Dutch sprinter Dylan Groenewegen. He would never make it back into the pack as the intensive chasing had already started. And the intensive chase phase lasted long, very long. All the breakaway members had surrendered, except for Trek's Planckaert. To hold on or not to hold on, that was the question. And what could MartÃnez do this time, helped by Cerezo and our leader for the GC Sam Vandenborre? The previously mentioned false flat finished ruined Planckaert's dream of a stage win. In the meanwhile Orica's Sonny Colbrelli was leading out Australia's champion Michael Matthews in the most perfect way... But ultimately FDJ's Magnus Cort Nielsen got rid of the last car of his train and claimed a clear and deserved win, as Matthews had to settle for second.
