May

April has been a turbulent month, with a disaster in our C1 trip to start with. Some good minor placings in the races we did expect not much from made up for it, so that Azerbaijan was the judge for the question if we had a good or a bad month. Good stage results but another GC disappointment made it an ok month looking at the final outcome.

Now May gives us spare opportunities for our promotion fight. We can't expect much from the flat classic in Barcelona where Mezgec will lead us. Instead Tennant will have his first chance to prove his worth in Namibia. Finally the Tour of Scotland should be a real deal for us, given the fact we have Mezgec & Antón leading us there.

Barcelona Classic

We have the ambition here to set up a train for Mezgec. Drucker & Papok are one of the best leadout duos in the division and should finally prove that. Moreover Timmer is here to make stuff interesting over the hills and might fight for a surprise finesseur victory. As our leader is clearly not the strongest here we also expect some agressive riding by our young guys to join a break.

Goal: Top 5

This is our very first goal race of the season. Before the season we knew that we wanted a top-class TTist, and we have one in Andrew Tennant to compete for the victory here. In the ranking of the strongest time triallists of the division he should be #2 behind Yatsevich of Spark Project. We need a Top5 to fullfill our goal here, but we came to Namibia for a podium. On a good day maybe even more...

While our young Estonian is here only for gaining some experience, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso_ser.png Kasa in his serbian TT champion jersey should be an outside candidate for the Top10.

This is a really, really worthful race for us and can bring us many points if we are on the right side of the luck this time. A problem could be that the only mountain stage is on the last stage, and a certain leader of ours loves to underperform on last days. He has our whole mountain support on his side for this race though, so a chance to turn the worst of luck around.

Additionally, Antón has done very well on a stage in Azerbaijan that was very similar to this years stage 2 of the tour of scotland. An opportunity to climb into the leaders jersey there? We'd swap that for finally winning a GC though of course.

Mezgec will be here without his train, as the team is focussed on our basque mountain goat. Still he should have a chance of fighting for a stage victory on stage 1 & 3 and maybe even on stage 4 if no hilly sprinters are present.

We don't expect breakaways from our domestiques this time, but instead we expect that Isostar aggressively shows theirselves at the front and makes this race ours to give our leaders the best of possible chances to deliver.

Goal: Top 3 and Stage Win

All out for Mezgec was the plan for today. Sadly we failed the first part of the plan, sending a man up in the break. This got caught though, and as a result our next part of the plan should start off: Setting up a train for Luka. But yep, that failed again as it did over the whole season. Mezgec also couldn't show off with good position, but wasn't completely out of contension yet.

i.imgur.com/tCYQaCd.png

Then Kraftwerk once again pulled out a great pace and dominated stuff until the end with a great 1-2. Our men Papok & Drucker completely failed to deliver this time, but at least Mezgec could hang on to a Top 10. And Albert "the Joker" Timmer was able to pull out some points for us as well finishing 13th.

Well a race we must deliver at. Tennant being the second-strongest CT TTist needed to achieve a good result for us here, at least a podium. Well, he didn`t, we will just qoute the report and don't say anything more about his performance:

An iffy ride was what we got from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Tennant: he never troubled those at the very top today. He would come home, well down for him, in 7th.

Kasa also couldn't surprise and finished 18th. That's our by far easiest goal failed, leaving us with a huge disappointment.

You couldn't call it out better. But one by one.

On stage 10 we had the classical Mezgec performance, being weaker than his leadout. Good debut.

Stage 2 could've well been a copy of Azerbaijan. Well, no. Antón lost way too much time for his hill/acceleration combination. Especially on a certain russian.

He still leads with 5 to go, heading for solo glory.

At the end of the day our young home-grown rider got caught and it was a sprint finish. Of course Luka copuldn't compete for the Top 5 there.

On stage 4 the break survived. What a surprise, this time we weren't present. And of course Mezgec sprinted well when there was nothing on the line. He came in 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Scotland/4-8.jpg
Luka going well in a tight sprint for 3rd.

The final day started well:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Scotland/5-2.jpg
Day starts good - Katrasnik & Timmer in the break of the day

A fully irrational and dumb attack by our leader on the penultimate "climb" that was just a waste of energy later everyone started the climb together. So he only brought the break with 2 of our riders back and spent a useful amount of energy. Perfect.Juodvalkis then early dropped as usual. But our dutchman on a strong day, guiding the captain into the final.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Scotland/5-6.jpg
Timmer leading stuff for Antón on the last climb

But then our basque mountain goat faded big time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Scotland/5-12.jpg
Antón choking as always on the last stage

He finished 4th, which is bad as favourite on that stage, and also meant that it would only be a 5th overall in the aftermaths. Fantastic.

1.5/10

Man of the race: Gasper Katrasnik - Some fantastic effort to come close to a breakaway victory on stage 4. That's teh spirit!

Retard of the race: Igor Antón - Could've well been Mezgec here for scoring nothing or Juodvalkis for being dropped even before it goes uphill like in almost every race, but this time it's for Antón. You can't ride these retared race tactics if you're the race favourite. He wasn't the strongest on the hilly stages though too, but with the relatively weak startlist a podium couldn't be too much to ask for. Well, it turned out that it was.

June

Looking back at the month of May we've seen various types of desasters. It says all when a 10th in a sprint race was our best result accoring to what we should've done. Our first goal race, which we thought beforehand is unfailable, was obviously a failure. And then the best possible race where our basque captain was the outright favourite wan't a complete failure, but once again he let us down on the last day and achieved much less then we needed.

From now on it's defending our good looking current position in the standings. The season of Antón is almost over, espeically after his risky attempt in Capo. Then there is a bigger chance for Drucker to save his season in a cobbled classic in Lincoln, which might be slightly too hilly for him though. The biggest race for us this time though will be, yes really, the Post Denmark Rundt, where Tennant has to show something after disappointing so far. He's got some great support on his side, which will also play a role for Mezgec, who can look for his first first victory of the season there.

Lincoln GP

6.6.cobbledCaptain: Jempy Drucker C2Value:www.rockclimbing.com/images/global/icons/stars-5-2.gif

Yes, we have already recognized that we lack support for our captain from Luxembourg on the cobbled "streets", but no, we can't do shit about that right now. Hopefully he won't suffer under this problem once again. Or crash once again. Either way, Jempy will be on his own for scoring a decent result here. A Top 5 would do the trick for us.

Goal: Top 5

Post Danmark Rundt

9.6.-13.6.bumpy & TTCaptain: Andrew Tennant C2HCwww.rockclimbing.com/images/global/icons/stars-5-5.gif

Goal race #2 for us. And we want to do nothing more than a wreckfest! Tennant clearly the guy for a podium, Kasa is the outside shot second option. Our british import's outstanding energy stats should really help him to survive the first 4 stages in time and then to still ride a competitive TT. At least we are hoping that the likes of Robert, Stannard, Sebright and Flens are sorted out until the TT, which would make life so much easier here.

Then aditionally we have a strong set-up for Mezgec, who could do something if he finally recieves a leadout from the two minor sprinters. The bumpy stages should fit him very well. Bole with another chance on the more punchy stage to add to that. We even have brought 2 breakaway specialsts in Gasper & the Joker for stage 4.

This, especially being a HC race, needs to give us tons of scoring to keep our promotion fight on the right side. If we don't achieve the sponsor goal here though I am defenitely going to cry. Out loud.

Call it the gamble: There are only 8 km in this race that are mountainious. And we felt that these are enough to make Antón a contender for the victory. Non of the stages really look to selective, and with his great acceleration and resistance stats we have the feeling that our basque captain can be competitive here to keep up with the peloton until the MTT and then upset the puncheurs. That is of course a gamble, but who should be able to do that if not him. Well, the toughest hilly stage is stage 6 which means that he won't win anyway.

Then we have the possibility of a rising and shining Bole, who'll surely love these up and down stages with a flat finish. If Geschke is not here and breakaways are controllable then we mostly expect a stage win from our co-captain. The other riders are just here to surprise the established ones and hurt the favourites on the hills with an attacking style of riding. Much effort here will be made to bring our basque leader in the best possible position.

But on that cobbled section he ran out of gas and couldn't stay with his 7 other companions. In the aftermaths that meant P8 for him while Pippo won the race, which is okay but not what we expected. Also we would've liked a breakaway attempt.

Goal race #2 for us. Tennant was the guy to achieve that, and he delivered it by solid performances. He sadly couldn't hurt Yatsevich on the hills, but he stayed with (most of) the best and thus achieved a good placement for the TT. There he went solid another time, so that he concluded the race on the lowest step of the podium.

Kasa on stage 5, mediocre time trial

The set-up for Mezgec couldn't be bothered by putting up a sprint train, which lead to the fact that we should've been chanceless here. Well he did a good job and came close to a surprise on the opening stage, but at the very end he sadly ran out of gas. Solid performances on the other sprints, but nothing outstanding despite the decent hilly performance on stage 3.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Denmark/PCZ0008.jpg

Bole and Timmer targetted stage 4 as they were only helpers onthe other days. There the couple managed to achieve soome good results, but not enough to earn enough for the workload we've done. On the other stages they were just helpers, combined with an ok time trial that at least made up for some minor GC points outside the Top10.

Man of the Race: Andrew Tennant - At least he achieved the goal in climbing on the podium this tour, which was very much needed here. His performance was clearly not outstanding though, just delivering a weigthful minimum goal for us.

Retard of the race: our timing to set the punch - Well, I don't really know. Two times our team looked very good for a stage, especially on the hilly one. The manner in which we lost that hurts even more, cause the likes of Timmer & Bole looked like they had so much more in the tank than riding home 5th and 6th...

The most important race of the season. Tennant for the overall win has some great support on his side, with f.e. another Top10 prospect in Kasa. Him in the time trial and stage hunters Mezgec, Bole & Drucker should add at least 2 stage wins to that race.

Sponsors and thus our budget for next season as well as our rankings will be majorly influenced by the outcome of this race.
