Volta Ciclista a Catalunya
A huge moment for me as I lined up for my first Word Tour. Fitting too that it is in Spain. I have grown to love this country already, with the great amount of joy it has given me on my bike. It was time to put emotions aside for the time being. Here goes history...
Stage 1 saw me attack thrice early on in an attempt to get into the breakaway. I was given a free role in this race and I had made the KOM jersey a priority. All three times I was chased down. Maybe this a mark pf respect from the peloton. I'd like to think so. I got lucky on the fourth attempted breakaway. I joined 4 others. Soon however, the breakaway split up into 3 groups with me being the lone rider in the second group with 2 riders ahead and behind me. The latter 2 were soon caught by the peloton. I was too but not before picking up third place on both climbs. I was caught on the third ascent by the peloton and somehow held on to the back pf the pack. The other two in the break were caught after the climb and it came down to a sprint to decide the winner. Davide Cimolai took the honours.
Stage 2 was mostly flat and I took it easy. I tried a cheeky attack with 5 km to go but could not ride away from the peloton. Another sprint saw Michael Matthews take the win.
I was in the breakaway again on Stage 3 with 2 others. We dropped a rider after the thrid climb. I secured enough points to take the lead in the KOM classification. We were caught less than 5 km from the line and finished in the pack.
Stage 4 saw me start in the KOM leader's jersey.
I did not join the day's break which led to me falling to 4th in the KOM classifciation. My day in the sun was short-lived but I was proud of it nonetheless.
Stage 5 was another one for the sprinters and I did not bother to do anything out of the ordinary.
Stage 6 saw me getting back into the break to try to collect more KOM points. Our breakaway had a 6 minute lead over the peloton at the top of the first climb which was halved at the top of the second. We were caught with 10 km to go. I moved up to 2nd in the KOM classification, 6 points off the top with more points available on the last stage.
I had no option but to join the break on Stage 7 to challenge for the KOM jersey. Ruben Guerreiro, the classification leader, too was in it. I picked up 3rd place on the first climb and was first over the second climb. Guerreiro had picked up 2 points over the climbs. However, we were both dropped from the break after the second climb, which meant my KOM quest would remain unsuccessful here, by a mere 3 points. I was caught and then dropped by the peloton too on the MTF. Rafal Majka won the stage with Simon Yates taking the GC win.

A decent World Tour debut which could've been made sweeter with 4 more points in the KOM classification. I think I gave a good account of myself and there shouldn't be any doubts in anyone's mind anymore if I belong here. If I come back here next year, which I might I very well might, I think I'll be aiming for bigger things than just the KOM win.

Finishing second in KOM and even leading it is something remarkable when considering it is your first WT race.
Team Sky looks ridiculously strong now and the future with Jungels and the Yates Brothers

April sweeps in with 4 one day classics and a stage race. There are more World Tour events lined up on my calendar but they are later in the month. For now, I'll update you on the first half of the month.
Gran Premio Miguel Indurain
Spain again and a free rider role. Daniel Felipe Martinez joined the breakaway for us. I stayed with the lead group throughout. When it came down to the decisive section in the closing kilometres, I was in the lead group of 11, having caught and passed the breakaway some time earlier. As the attacks started, I hung on and on till the last couple of kilometres but could not challenge for the win. I ended up in 5th place, a minute behind stage winner - Winner Anacona.

I was free to ride my own race once again. I knew I was in with a chance at the end so I stayed with the pack. I went away from the pack with 25 km to go in a solo attack, pulling out to almost a 1 minute lead with 15 km to go. I was caught by Mathieu van der Poel with 10 km left. 2 km later I found myself in the lead group of 4. I was dropped by this group and caught by the next group of 6 riders before the finish line. I finished just out side the top 10 in 11th place. van der Poel went on to claim the win.

Tanks Tamijo. Indurain's was a good start to the month. Next up, the two Ardennes one-day classics!
I was chosen as the leader in my first Ardennes outing! This was a special moment for me and I want o soak it all in.
The start of the race saw Daniel Felipe Martinez joined the break for us. The breakaway survived till about 25 km to go, when a group of 17, of which I was a part, caught them and left them behind. 5 km later, the group size doubled. The attacks started soon after. I managed to stay in touch with the leaders till about 5 km to go. After that, 5 riders went away and I hung on to the second group. Ettix took advantage of having 3 riders in the lead group of 5 to propel Alaphilippe to the win. I finished in 13th place, not too bad for my first time.

Martinez joined the break once again. I was not the leader here, with Calmejane taking leadership duties. The break was caught with only 17 km left. I attacked from the front, with 13 km to go but could not stay ahead for very long. I fell back to the pack and that's where I ended. A group of four riders were in the contest for the win. Kwiatkowski proved too strong for the others, while Alaphilippe narrowly missed out on back-to-back wins, settling for 2nd place here.

A decent start to my Ardennes career with a top 15. I was not selected to start the Liege-Bastogne-Liege. I put that aside and got ready to start in the Tour de Romandie, the next race on my schedule.

Thanks Tamijo. After a long month, I reached Switzerland for the Tour of Romandie, held in the last week of April. I was leading the team again, something I had got used by now.
Stage 1 was a super short ITT where I crossed the line in 2nd place, 4 seconds off the pace. By the time the guns went past, I ended up 17th, 20 seconds behind. Tom Dumoulin took the stage and the leader's jersey.
Stage 2 was a flat stage where nothing much of note happened besides the bunch sprint. Thery Schir was the surprise winner.
Stage 3 saw a massive early pack split. The last, bigger group formed the peloton while the three groups out ahead joined together to form the day's break, with 16 riders. Calmejane had joined the break for us. He was one of the first to be caught, as a part of a 3 man group on the first climb. The entire break was caught on the second climb by a lead group of 35 riders of which I was a part. I had no teammates to support me and was dropped on the third climb. I suffered for the rest of stage, finishing in 37th place, 18 minutes down on stage winner Nairo Quintana!
Stage 4 had both me and Calmejane joining the break. The break was initially of 9 riders but 2 were dropped very fast. I was dropped from the break quite some way before the finish. Soon after, I was caught by the GC leaders on the third climb of the day. I was struggling with fitness and fell out of this group too. Calmejane's sojourn earned him a high place at the finish, a minute behind the lead group of 11 riders. I rode in alone, almost 4 minutes down. Ion Izagirre won the stage.
Stage 5 saw Calmejane join the break once again. I was still under the weather and decided to stay in the group. I struggled to keep pace once again, losing more than 10 minutes as Nairo tied up the stage win and the GC with a dominant ride.
Stage 6 was another ITT and a relief for me from the hard climbing. The long ITT saw me lose another minute, this time to stage winner Luke Durbridge. It was a decent outing, but my hopes for this race were over after stage 3 itself. I managed to get 5th place in the U25s.

Also, I think fatigue caught up after so many back to back races I think. Got a little carried away with the prospect of riding in World Tour races perhaps.

After a hectic April, May brings only two races. First up, I joined the team in Azerbaijan for the five day stage race.
I was leading the team in this race. The field wasn't the strongest and I fancied my chances to achieve another high finish.
Stage 1 was perfectly flat and was won by Phil Bauhaus in the sprint.
Stage 2 turned out to be quite tough for many riders. The peloton was down to 60 riders after the first climb itself. I lost touch with the front of the race, after a group of leaders, including me, had distanced the peloton. I crossed the line a couple of minutes back, but still in the top 10. Bakelants took the stage and the lead in the GC.
I was categorised as one of the favourites for Stage 3. Schoonbroodt joined the break for us. The break was caught with just 6 km remaining. Schoonbroodt took up the pace-making work for me. I finished in the pack.
One of the favourites again for Stage 4, I was in the third group on the road after the second climb. The front three groups merged by the time the climb to the finish came about. It was a long climb and my effort in climbing saw me in the lead group of thrre riders with 10 km left. I went away from the duo of Dayer Quintana and Bakelants and built up a lead of 40 seconds. Heiner Parra took up the chase and as I got tired, he made up a lot of ground. I was pipped to the line by Heiner Parra. It was so so close for me! I had to settle for 2nd place. This fantastic ride took me up to 4th in the overall classification.
Stage 5 was another flat stage with a slightly uphill finish. The stage was without incident as the leaders protected their positions. Alexey Tsatevitch won the bunch sprint to the line.

Just 9 seconds off the podium and the white jersey. This was another good race for me. I hope to keep this momentum going. Consistency is what I'm striving for right now and the results of the past couple of months have been a good step in that direction. High standing in the KOM and the Team classifications too.
Another race to come in May, when I'll be back in Belgium. See you then.

The second race in May is another stage race. Back to Belgium again following Ardennes week.
Calmejane led the team for this race while I was selected as his helper. This race did not favour me a great deal except for the last uphill stage.
Stage 1 was flat and I stayed in the pack. Despite not being the allocated leader, the team had a mini-revolt of sorts and decided to protect me in turns instead of Calmejane! I wasn't sure what to think of this. I believe I should've been flattered then. The bunch sprint was won by Degenkolb.
Stage 2 had a couple of cobbled sections and the second one did all the damage. I was in the lead group on the road behind the break. And that's where I finished too, just that the break was caught.
Stage 3 was the ITT where I had high hopes of doing well. As I crossed the line, the timing screens showed me to be in 6th place, 24 seconds down. When it was all wrapped up, I was only 18th, more than a minute down on stage winner Tony Martin.
Stage 4 was another one for the sprinters and thus uneventful for me.
Stage 5 had us putting two guys into the break. It did not work as the break got caught with less than 10 km to go. I attacked the pack with 3.5 km to go but half a dozen other riders were stronger and dropped me in their counter attacks. I finished 8th on the stage and moved up to 8th place in the GC. The efforts by Trentin (3rd) and Kennaugh (4th) on this stage were not enough to usurp Martin who won the GC. Edoardo Zardini took the stage win.

I missed the U25 classification win by 1 second! 8th place is not a bad result in the end although I would've liked to have gone past the likes of Degenkolb, Arndt and Meersman in the general classification, given that they're pure sprinters and I should've been able to distance them on the final stage.
Another solid month has gone by and I'm very pleased with my form this year so far. Let's see how much more I can do.

June brought just one race and it was a stage race in Luxembourg. I was looking to keep the good run of results going. My agent had already started looking for contracts for me to sign for the following season and performing well in races is the best way to catch the attention of potential suitors.
I was the team leader and I was targeting stages 1 and 3 in this race.
Stage 1 was a short ITT. I pulled out a good ride and finished just 7 seconds off the winning time, albeit down in 20th place.
Stage 2 was for the sprinters and they fought it out for the win in the bunch sprint. Caleb Ewan won.
Stage 3 was the only stage with some climbing and I fancied myself to rise up the standings here. I was in the lead group of just 40 riders after crossing the first climb. The group kept getting smaller. I finished in the lead group of 20 riders, picking up a handful of places to rise to the edge of the top 10.
Stage 4 was another flat stage and it wasn't very eventful for me or the team.
Stage 5 was flat too and decided in another bunch sprint, with Andrew Fenn taking the honours this time. Fabio Silvestre picked up 5th place for us on this stage. I finished in 12th place overall while picking up another top 5 in the U25s.
