Maybe he is not as bad..

01-01-2015: Aubervilliers, France

After coming down from the presentation, the first face I saw was Henry's. He looked surprised to see me, but honestly I think, it was on purpose. He had two months to know that I was also on the team.

- What are you doing here, he asked .
- The same thing as you, I answered.
- Well, well, it looks like we go to the same as always..

Me and Henry had always been together. We was born in the same town, same year, we started to the local cycling club almost on same time, Henry a bit earlier though. At the beginning at the age of 7, we were both equal, but as we grew older, he became more and more unstoppable.

- What will your goal this year, I asked him.
- Right now I want to be consistent, you know what happened last year..
- Well, I don't have any one either.
- Good luck in Spain, I heard you should go there.
- Thanks.

I walked away from him and started to look at my calender. In January I was going to Spain to train with my team, but also because I was racing my first three races.

The start of the race

My first race. I can still remember it like it was yesterday. From San Sebastian to San Sebastian. During this race, I wanted to help my teammate, César Bihel. He attacked early to get to the breakaway and I followed. I worked not so much, but I was also a water carrier. We got caught with 10 kilometer to go.

After my performance in San Sebastian, I got allowed to go to breakaway. However no one wanted to go in breakaway. A Caja Rural guy followed me, but he never came free. As expected I got caught with 11 kilometers to go.

A week after my debut, I tried to go to breakaway this time alone with some others. The route didn't attract me, but you could always go to break. And it worked - perfectly. We got caught with 5 kilometers to go. But I finished in a respective 16th place. First top 20! First of many?

The start of stage 2. It is me with number 184

I was a helper for Steven Tronet during the whole race - my first stage race by the way. I protected him during the whole race, and chatted with him; He is a funny guy!

I did not have any chances in the sprint, though, as firstly there were a lot of "big" stars like Ben Swift and Niccolo Bonifazio, and secondly we had our own sprinter Anthony Maldonado. He was in top 15 in three stages. All in all a very memorable stage race. Hopefully the first out of many.

A hilly stage, who will favorite the punchuers or the fighters. The plan here was to keep David Menut from difficulties during the race. I am domestique

I love being alone, right?

It was also what we started to do. Protect David. But later in the race, I got carte blanche by our directeur sportif.

- Let us see what you can do.
- Are you sure?
- David has four teammates around him, if something should happen we will ask you to come back.

And then I attacked. Unfortunately at the moment nobody wanted to attack and as there were no break, you probably guess what happened: Me alone in front.

I did not try to go full out, but just trying to build my form to be in form in April. I got caught with 20 kilometers to go. The race ended with many attacks on the hills. Gatto attacked with 4 kilometer to go and took the race win. Our best rider was David, who crossed the line in 13th.

Paris - Troyes

A flat race. If something else happen, this will end in a sprint. In this race, our DS was surprised over my strength for some days ago, he changed my status from being a domestique to a free element in this race. So it means that it is time for a new breakaway!

i.imgur.com/OnreXuB.png
Just the start of the race. I am the one who is overtaking the car.

I attacked immediately after the start. However this time I had company. Florian Sénéchal (Cofidis) and Romain Combaud (l'Armée) joined me. They were pretty optimistic and kind to talk with, but at the end we got caught just under the 10k banner.

It ended with a sprint where Maxime Vantomme could throw his arms in air. David meanwhile showed his improvement in form - finishing just outside the podium in 4th. However the big surprise of the day would be Florian, who became 3rd in a sprint despite sitting in the breakaway.

A flat race, but with some few hills in the last few kilometers, it might not end in a sprint. I had for second race in a row impressed the DS and he wanted me to be in break for thrid race in a row. My form is really well now!

i.imgur.com/gDCyh4b.png
Can I come in top 10...or will the sprinters pass me?

A new breakaway day. This time I was together with Tobias Ludvigsson (Giant), Jose Herrada (Movistar) and Adrian Kurek (CCC). However this time we got a nice time gap which we could hold off to the end.

With 15 kilometers to go, Kurek attacked. I followed him. With 8 kilometers to go, he attacked once again. This time I couldn't respond. I got caught by the haunting peloton.

It could not be the end? I will try again, I thought. But then the pace became slow. Much to my annoyance. I attacked again and tried to catch Kurek. I couldn't. He won with some few seconds. But could I hold on to second place?

It hurted a lot in my body, no, actually it screamed, but I tried to hold on. Then I saw that I got past. Come on, maybe a top 10! I threw my bike over the line. Which place did I finish on? I waited eagerly on the results...

No...just outside top 10! I was not sad or angry - maybe on Anthony, but I was disappointed. The director tried to comfort me.
- Don't worry. How you rode today, show real fighter instincts. You didn't give up, when you got caught. You didn't give up to the finish line. Remember that. It could help you in the future.
- Thanks, I hope that it wasn't once in a lifetime.
- It isn't! How many try to come to a professional or even Continental team and fail?
- Many, I guess.
- You are lucky! With your talent there will come more races like this.

A flat stage with many hills. I was back to the reality being a domestique for Anthony Maldonando. He had some great performances in this season so far. Nothing real exciting happened during the race.

Tour de Normandie

i.imgur.com/G3woCxd.png

My second stage race in my career. All stages is more or less flat. However, as I was working for David Menut, I did not ride in any breakaway.

i.imgur.com/CL6ies9.jpg
The prolouge. I believe it is only the second time, I am on a time trialing bike!

My highlight would be the third stage. It was raining and there was a lot of crosswind. Menut said to me, that I should try to ride fast for breaking the peloton and it worked!

i.imgur.com/OYNJWU2.png
Stage 3. I worked hard in about 80 kilometers, before I got dropped. But look at the carnage I created.

An unexpected meeting
- Great work, Pierre, I really appreciate what you did there out.
- Thanks, David.
Knock, knock. Damien came in:
- Hey! I knew, you was strong, but I never thought..this strong.
I laughed.
- I have never been strong to be honest. I just suffered more today - and I love when it is raining.
Meanwhile we were having some banter, suddenly it knocked on the door.

Knock, knock. It was Stephane, the manager, who came in our room - why would he do that in a unknown small race in March?
- Hey, I want to talk with you, Pierre. Only four eyes.

We walked to the room next to.
- What you did there out, was amazing. Never had I seen a kid doing this so early!
- Ehm..thanks.
- Honestly I think we have found a diamond in our team. And it is you.

Diamond? Ha, look at Henry if you want to see a real diamond, I thought.
- Hey, work hard, and one day you will start to win a race.
- Yes, I said, but it was nothing new to me
- The last example I know with a rider on the team with so big potiental was Tony. He worked hard and even harder and look now, winning a Tour stage and already weared malliot jeune - and that is only his beginning! Remember: Work hard and one day you will do the same, understand?
- Yes.

I thought about this the rest of the week. Nothing special else happened during the race. One day I will be able to win a race. One day I will win on Champs-Élysées. One day I will win the French tricolor. One day I will win the world championship. That's my dream. That's why I'm a cyclist.

03-04-2015: Vitré, France

I was in the last group coming home. But I didn't care. I was looking after Damien. Where did that guy go?
- Dami, your..
- Sorry, I did a complete ass of myself.
- Do you say, huh? You completely fool! That is not how to ride!
- Sorry..
- Well, just not do it next time, I sighed.

....

It was time to get a lot of massage. I use never to like massage, but when I crash, I need to have massage. However our masseur was not here, so I was in pretty bad mood, when I walked down to the local café (yes, one of the things you learn in cycling is where to find a good café!).

- A cappuccino please.
I took the mobile. Tried to read the latest news, but I felt that I just couldn't. I haven't told my teammates that I was going to the café, which is rule number one.
- Are you alright?, someone said.
I started to walk away.
