Trofeo Calvia (1.1) Baleares The final race of this year's Mallorca Challenge was raced at the west end of the island, close to where it all started with the Trofeo Palma. Inspired by the Basque fans at one out of many climbs, Gorka Izagirre joined the breakaway along with Rüdiger Selig and Pablo Lechuga. Their gap grew to several minutes but many bumps were yet to come. Halfway through the race, Selig was the first who couldn't keep up with the pace at the front. No surprise as this terrain doesn't really suit him. At the penultimate climb, Lechuga surrendered too. Gorka still had a gap of one full minute but with some valley racing and one short climb left everything would be in the details. Would the oldest Izagirre stall? In the end it were the accelerations on the final climb which cost Gorka Izagirre the victory. Before the final turn to the left, Dimension Data's Dutchman Sam Oomen flew by. Gorka didn't even get a top five place. So Sam Oomen won and Gorka took 7th in the end, with his younger brother finishing just outside the top 10. Ion Izagirre had to start his own sprint from really far out because he thought Gorka had it already. Dubai Tour (2.HC) Stage 2, 135.8 kms The second and first full stage is a pan flat one during which possible crosswinds could be as least as challenging as who we are up against. Four guys went hunting for what seemed to be nothing more than some intermediate sprint points. The best-known names were French, AG2R's Gaël Malacarne and Anthony Turgis in black for Direct Énergie. But way before the expected mass sprint their adventure was over already. Battling against the train of Giant's Marcel Kittel, it looked like Aridani Tinajero's kick would give us the upper hand. Sadly, Carlos Barbero lost the wheel of his leadout man and had to burn quite a lot of energy to get that wheel back. At that point Kittel was coming forward too. Both Barbero and Kittel waited as it was still too early to launch their final jump properly and they got beat by the Pole Adrian TekliÅ„ski despite his early celebration. Herald Sun Tour (2.1) Stage 2, 153 kms The second stage offered a first chance for both the sprinters and the guys who would like to give it a try for the black-and-yellow KoM jersey. We wanted to send a guy for the KoM points too, but our riders had a unfavorable starting position within the pack. As all of them vainly tried to make their way through the pack, a group of 4 had taken off already.
Avanti's Davide Pacchiardo and Bora's Björn Thurau both collected 32 points, which means this King of Mountain jersey will be fought for. After the neutralisation of the break of the day, the pace is upped in a brutal way. Beñat Intxausti had worked earlier on and had to let go of the pack. Apart from our main sprinter Manuel MartÃnez and our co-leader Sam Vandenborre, our entire team would suffer the same fate.
They both had to give everything to keep up with a group that was now getting smaller by the minute. Compared to the number of starters, in the end only one fifth of the pack would finish in that small front group. As for the sprint, Manuel MartÃnez got boxed in and couldn't do better than 10th. Dubai Tour (2.HC) Stage 3, 185 kms Well, with only flat stage in this year's edition it is obvious this should also be one for sprinters. We'll try to set up a train for Carlos Barbero. A small group without any well-known tried an attack nonetheless. But just after the intermediate sprint they had no choice but to surrender. Due to the high pace our riders which could be part of the train were nowhere to be seen, so Barbero jumped on the wheel of Michal Kolar. But Barbero had already used so much energy to keep that wheel that he had none left to sprint. But this breakaway group without any big names made them work for the stage victory. Orica was setting up a train for Rick Zabel, but the breakaway still had over one minute with less than 5 kilometers to go. Eventually two guys would survive and Rick van Breda achieved a nice stage win for the Hincapie team. FYI I edited the local .cdb to have the advantage of the AI riders at the hard level at 1.030 instead of 1.025

Dubai Tour (2.HC) Final stage, 106.8 kms The final stage was another flat one which led the riders to the highest tower in the world, Burj Khalifa, which means Tower of Khalifa in Arab. With 40 kms to go, the breakaway containing Aldo Lature got split and our Bolivian rider wasn't lucky enough to be at the front. And soon the possibility of a stage would be denied to the entire breakaway anyway. Carlos Barbero started the sprint in a rather promising position, sitting next to points leader Marcel Kittel and GC leader Michael Matthews. He was less drained than before some of the earlier sprints over here... But still he didn't have enough left and was no match for stage winner Kittel, who secured the points jersey as Matthews came home in 2nd and claimed the overall win. Herald Sun Tour (2.1) Stage 4, 145.9 kms Final chance for sprinters here at stage 4. With only one single climb on the road and far from the finish, they shouldn't have any trouble today. Diego Ochoa made it into today's break of the day, thanks to the time the Colombian had already lost. He set the pace at the climb, where he came second in the KoM sprint. But after his enthusiastic climbing he had to surrender at the long flat sector before the finish.
Meanwhile in the pack some big racing was going on. For our team only Manuel MartÃnez could stay with the pack as Sam Vandenborre had to give up after a long fight. At that point one guy was still riding alone. That way the German veteran Simon Geschke achieved a more than well-deserved stage win. As Manuel MartÃnez and Sam Vandenborre were still in contention for a spot in the top ten they would both need every single piece of help the other riders of our team could provide. Ten other guys did join forces and took off hoping they would make it to the line. Amongst them were several solid riders such as Eduardo Sepúlveda, Tobias Ludvigsson and Fabio Sabatini. They started the first of three ascents of Arthur's Seat with an advantage of 4 minutes.
At that same first ascent, it already became clear MartÃnez would have a hard time defending his GC spot. He gave the sign and we changed plans as Vandenborre was still riding comfortably. But at the last climb he didn't have that much anymore, and the breakaway still wasn't over. The stage went to Direct Énergie's Pierre Gouault, one of the many young and gifted French climbers. Vandenborre set a brutal pace from the foot himself, hoping to shake enough guys to climb some places. Moser cracked early but Sam also hit a little wall. A Kazakh guy passed him, but he managed to keep up with the next group.
