Very good route as well. Despite beeing Brasil, wouldn't mind seeing a one day classic hosted here, in this route. Much better than having a race in Abu Dhabi.

Really enjoyed yesterdays Olympic road race.

Action packed, difficult cobblestones and tricky descents with a nicely placed climb in the finishing circuit. Sort of a Lombardy style course. Very good advertisment for the sport Olympic road race has been a must watch since 2004 if you ask me. No radios, small teams gives a unique feel. No way with cycling go that direction though, I think realistically GT's going down to eight riders is a realistic short term aim (classics six?, Ardennes in particular has become snoozy)

It felt as if this is what we should be getting in the Ardennes rather than the wait fest it currently turned out to be. Italy, Poland and GB in particular enlivened things as they had to with the likes of Alaphillipe and Valverde.

Whilst Nibali and Italy in particular arguably deserved the win, Nibali took risks on two descents and his unlucky number came up the second time round. Majka gets a lot of hate, but I did almost feel sorry for him at the end there. Fuglsang and GvA looked cooked two or three times but for them to eventually contest was great for them.

Minekeys he looks a bit sluggish when he attacks but fantastic again, liked to see Purito give it one more go and Froome bot could not really handle the rough stuff so well. I still fancy him in the TT just because there are so few contenders bar Tommy D (who will likely win)

Superb race- it really was some of the best riders in the world slogging it out, with what was ultimately a very worthy winner in GVA, who thumped a brilliant Fuglsang in the sprint just as everyone knew he would. Shocked when Nibali crashed, but evidently he was rather too desperate. Thought GB rode a great race, but there was too much pressure on Froome to deliver back home despite the fact that, on paper, he didn't stand a chance.
Really enjoyed that race. Now onto LizzieBot.

You complained about Costa wheelsucking to 2013 World Title. This would've been worse... Felt good seeing Costa dropping FroomeDog as well. Costa could've done better.!

He stil managed to pull ton's of wheelsucking even when he was back. Later he wheelsucked crashed Thomas..and sprinted before him over the line. What a hero.
He is still one the best wheel suckers in the peloton.

Stop trashing our national hero, godamnit! Pfft

Has anyone already read an explanation of what happened on the last descent? Whether Nibali took Henao down or the opposite?

I'm italian and how you can see from the signature, i felt dead when i saw Nibali on the tarmac. I hoped in Aru at the end but he was very tired and he isn't a good rider on the flat. SadSadSad
Vincenzooooooo Nibaliiiiiiii

Does anyone have a link to the full race? I was out last night and couldn't watch it. Frown

Nibali breaks both collarbones. I am sorry for him. He was certainly the strongest. Contrary, GVA was super too.

GvA deserved it.

No, he deserved it not and he wheelsucking also just.
Nibali deserved it most and after him Fuglsang.
But deserved does not matter in sports.

are you drunk now?..or after silver celebration trolling mode is back on?

Are you disagree with that Nibali deserved of winning or what are you trying to tell?

SotD
Wow that text composing...

More than one rider can deserve to win a race. I doubt anyone will say that Nibali didn't deserve it. But GVA definately also deserved his win.

Henao took Nibali with down. Is not Nibali fan, but he drove a fantastic race and really deserves to win it, he was just unlucky.

One of the rare times I agree with you, even though that 3rd person "is not fan" gotta go man, it's gotta go.

Echo much of Smowz thoughts above.

Additional mentions for Henao and Alaphillipe who both also were awesomely strong. Nibali and Henao's ferocious attacks on the last ascent were quite devastating and impressive - how Alaphillipe closed a minute gap pretty much solo on the ascent while this was going on up front is frankly frightening!

GVA an awesome winner - was up front for whole 2nd half of race, struggled a couple of times on the hills, but always working hard either in the break or in the chase at the end. Given the rest of the guys around the top 10 all have GT GC pedigree, incredible grintas throughout and still had the legs for a proper sprint finish.

Enjoyed so much just finishing watching the final 50km again!

Austrian television is so clueless..

What did they say? I always like quotes of clueless reporters

At that point I was mostly frustrated by their programe scheduling. ORF (Austria's broadcast company) has several channels, including a separate ORF Sport channel. They did not manage to show the olympic race once there, instead they showed some random qualiyfing basketball match. The few minutes they spared in the opening 100 kilometers, the commentator Brunner already showed however how he has no knowledge of the sport whatsoever, pronouncing names wrong, declaring wrong favourites and reading the race wrong. The guy who moderates the whole thing didn't he even bother to look into the camera when annoucning the road race, just reading up from his sheets and even then he can't name the stuff corretly..

ORF of course switched to swimming right away and they just came back for the decisive last kilometers. The funny thing is: They announced the race and then they switched to advertisment spots for like 3-5 minutes. They showed advertisment during the final climb!! and just came to the race before the downhill segment lol. Like really, they claim they transmit 300 hours of sport during olympic games and they manage to fuck it up in the road race in such a complete way, it's incredible.

Well at least at that point I understood then why the austrian commentator should be happy that they did not transmit because he bombed some classic one-liners Kirby would have been proud: Declaring Purito as a "supeb rsprinter" or telling Majka that "he can enjoy now the last 3 kilometers to his certain gold medal". Another great thing was when he spotted tactical games between Van Avermaet and Fuglang who were just changing the lead. Ofc he didn't know that Van Avermaet is a great classic rider but rather declared him a mountain rider lol

Really it's just to much to list imo. ARD commentator is clueless at times too, but ARD was equally bad at scheduling and showing the road race, showing the news during the decisive climb. What is going on in their brain I ask!

Well I talked to my father and he said he wrote a letter of complaint to ORF. I am really not surprised that we don't have top cyclists although many continental teams work hard every year. ORF is a clueless bunch who just cares about formula one, shitty austrian football and ski sports.. for the sake of ORF, I hope we end up with zero medals..

Meanwhile the debate about smaller teams and peloton has risen again on the internet after the Rio showdown. Considering that this was radio-free race, what would have bigger impact on a much larger race like TdF - ban or limitation on radio communication or reducing the maximum number of riders team can send?

You just gotta love our Austrian commmentators, especially Brunner. Wink
He not only declared Purito as a "superb sprinter" but also called him "the Spanish World Champion" and kept on talking about Froome and if he would come back in the last few Kilometers even though he was about 2 minutes down.

Unfortunately he was at his worst best yesterday. Pfft

And as you said it's shocking how clueless our reporters and commentators are about sports that are not formula 1, football or skiing.

Shonak, I recommend the swiss SRF for cycling broadcasts, if you have reception and don't mind the Schwiizertüütsch. They are competend and have former pro Sven Montgomery as co-host.

German ARD didn't even broadcast it via livestream on their homepage...

And yes, there are more important and popular sports like bb-gun shooting, archery, synchronised swimming...you name it.

Wise ass mode on: Nibali got a double fractured collarbone not both collarbones broken. Huge difference, especially when having to wipe your butt! Wink

solo breakaway atm, with Lotte KOPECKY

Just one thing.

Fuglsang seemed to be the best rider yesterday, but when you don't ditch GVA or Alaphilippe before the finish, you're bound to not get gold.

If they had a combative prize like in le Tour, Fuglsang would've gotten it 100%.

Greg Van Avermaet, just wow. Probably our only medal, but I'll happily take it!
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.
