Looks to me like Kittel seldomly makes use out of Paolini's good lead-outs, but it's pretty realistic, the opponents are no slouches, after all.

Transfer market update 2

One of the sensations of last season was Jerome Coppel. He is about to finish his contract with the IAM Cycling team and it was clear that the budget of the Swiss team could not accommodate the demands of the French with Mathias Frank already in the team. The 27 years old will therefore pack and join Etixx - Quickstep. Coppel will most likely be sharing the leading role of the team with Frank Schleck and Lloyd Mondory.

One of the most surprising moves of the market comes from the fact that Chris Froome will abandon Team Sky and sign for the newly promoted Lampre - Merida team. This is quite a strange move as Lampre already has stage races in the team, although not as good as Froome. Nevertheless, the Italian team will be hoping that he improves his results this season as he only got a podium at the Tour de Romandie.

One of the highest contract renewals in this transfer market was Bauke Mollema getting a new 3 years contract with Vacansoleil - DMC. The word is that the winner of the 2012 Tour de France and the 2013 Vuelta a España had to get a salary decrease in order to stay in the team. Mollema will once again be the leader of the Dutch team. Even though he is not the same dominant rider he once was he can still take wins, like the overall GC in the Tour de Romandie, which he won in 2015 and 2016.

The last of the transfer news that we got today was that Tanel Kangert, the 22 years old Estonian that rides for HTC will leave the team. His new squad will be Team Katusha. It was clear that HTC could not keep all the climbers they had in the team but losing Kangert is a tough outcome for them as he has won the Young classification both in the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a España this year. He will most likely be one of the climbers to watch in the future.

Stage 4: Yanqing - Miaofeng Mountain

www.footiegame.net/images/pcm/04TB16 - Profile.jpg

The most interesting stage in the Tour of Beijing is the one finishing at the top of Miaofeng Mountain. The riders will have to tackle the only mountain stage of the Tour and it should decide the outcome of the GC. The stage will be not only the last climb but also the Xian Ren Dong and the Gao Ya Kou, a 1st category and a 2nd category climbs. Therefore, even if the stage is quite short it should be hard enough and many riders should get left behind.

www.footiegame.net/images/pcm/04TB16 - Break.jpg

The break of the day took a long time to be formed but in the end it was not that strong. A group of 6 riders was ahead at the climb to Xian Ren Dong, including Gianni Meersman (Tinkoff), Fredrik Kessiakoff (FDJ), Jonathan Tiernan-Locke (Lampre), Romain Bardet (IAM) and Mauro Finetto (Katusha). Discovery Channel was chasing because they did not want the gap to grow too much and it was 3' 15'' at the top. There was quite a lot of wind and Gianni Meersman was 1st at the top.

www.footiegame.net/images/pcm/04TB16 - Climb.jpg

The 2nd category climb to Gao Ya Kou was placed almost straight after the Xian Ren Dong. The peloton was still led by Discovery Channel but they had already burnt Taylor Phinney and it was Philip Deignan at the front of the pack. Sergey Chernetskiy followed on the best young rider jersey. The gap had decreased to 3 minutes for the break but they were still strong. On the other hand, a few riders had already decided to follow a gentler pace in the mountain stage.

www.footiegame.net/images/pcm/04TB16 - Gadret.jpg

The flat section between the last couple of climbs was flat with a tailwind. It was a very fast section of the stage and the break was eventually reeled back in. The peloton had been reduced quite a bit before the final climb. At the 3rd category climb of Chen Jia Zhuang the fastest rider was John Gadret, followed by Chris Anker Sorensen and Vincenzo Nibali. The KoM sprint was placed right before the right hand turn towards the Miaofeng Mountain.

www.footiegame.net/images/pcm/04TB16 - Peloton.jpg

There were quite a few attacks as soon as the climb proper to Miaofeng Mountain started but none was successful and at the 10 kilometers mark the group of the favorites was unchanged. Pierre Rolland and Rein Taaramae had been the last to try. Robert Kiserlovski was the rider setting the pace, which suggested that the pace was quite high. Jose Serpa and Bradley Wiggins were right behind. There were 70 riders in the group and with a headwind following a wheel was quite easy.

www.footiegame.net/images/pcm/04TB16 - Machado.jpg

Tiago Machado was the first rider that managed to open a gap ahead of the group of the favorites. With 7 kilometers to go the Portuguese already had 35 seconds over the main group. Kanstantsin Siutsou has tried to follow the attack but had not had the legs and stayed in the group. Jose Serpa was chasing hard but even the leader, Mark Renshaw, was able to follow. The average incline of the climb was below 6%. No team seems willing to work for the leader but he was expected to drop at some point.

www.footiegame.net/images/pcm/04TB16 - Favorites.jpg

The pace of the group of the favorites was not that hard and the gap for Tiago Machado had grown to 1' 05'' at the 4 kilometers mark. It looked unlikely that he would be caught in the few kilometers remaining. Mathias Frank and Andy Schleck had tried to attack but the wind was not helping. The gap to Machado only decreased with the attacks to grow again as no one wants to take the leader to the top and there are no Discovery Channel riders working. Jose Serpa was still leading the group at this point.

www.footiegame.net/images/pcm/04TB16 - Machado2.jpg

Tiago Machado was really enjoying himself in this climb to the Miaofeng Mountain. Tinkoff had not had a good season at all but this result will be very welcome at the Russian team headquarters. With 2 kilometers to go he had increased his gap to 1' 35'', putting him out of reach of the other favorites. Meanwhile, Levi Leipheimer attacked followed by Jerome Coppel and Ben Hermans. Frank Schleck was trying to follow. It was difficult to get a gap due to the wind but the riders were not very ambitious either.

www.footiegame.net/images/pcm/04TB16 - Sprint.jpg

The riders in the group of the favorites were thinking about the second place in the stage as they crossed under the last kilometer flag. The gap for Tiago Machado was still at the 1' 35'' mark so he was already celebrating. Ben Hermans was leading the main group, where some riders were trying late attacks. He was followed by Frank Schleck, Andy Schleck and Levi Leipheimer. Nevertheless, they did not manage to leave the leader behind so if no gaps are open Mark Renshaw will remain close to the top.

www.footiegame.net/images/pcm/04TB16 - Finish.jpg

Tiago Machado wins in Miaofeng Mountain! The Portuguese was quite unhappy with his season before the Tour of Beijing, given that he had only managed to get an 8th place at the Tour de Romandie as his best result. Tinkoff had also done a very poor season. This win at the queen stage in China will give them hope looking towards the next season and the team might even avoid the penultimate place in the World Tour rankings. It is the 2nd time in a row that Machado wins in Miaofeng Mountain but a crash in the last stage meant that he lost the race last year.

Frank Schleck was 2nd in the stage, 1' 16'' behind Machado and giving time to the group of the favorites. He was followed by Emanuele Sella, Andy Schleck and Juanjo Cobo. It was a very conservative climb by many of the favorites and most will not get anything out of the race. In the end the climb to Miaofeng Mountain is not hard enough to drop riders and attacks are needed. The headwind mean that many riders were too conservative and Machado managed to grab the win and the leader's jersey.

Transfer market update 3

Discovery Channel decided to renew the contract of Jean-Christophe Peraud but that left them without money to renew Mark Renshaw. The Australian is having a very good end of the season at the Tour of Beijing and BMC Racing Team announced that they are signing him for 2 seasons from the 2017 season. The American team has no sprinters so Renshaw should have a whole team to support him in many races next season.

Another of the American teams, Trek Factory Racing also found a new leader for the next season. Levi Leipheimer will join the team and is the first new rider for the 2017 squad. Trek is managing to create a very strong team overall as they are keeping their leaders from last year. On the other hand, HTC had already lost Tanel Kangert which means that their climbers assets are probably going to be much worse in the upcoming season.

Team Sky was quick to find a replacement as the leader of their team. Marco Pinotti was said to have offers from Katusha and Quickstep but in the end he chose to take an indisputable leading role at the British team. The Italian is similar to Froome but stronger against the clock and his results this season include a stage in the Giro d'Italia and a podium at the Tour de Romandie. The 31 year old will stay at least 2 seasons with Sky.

The knock on effect from BMC signing Mark Renshaw is that Tony Gallopin had to find another team to be a leading sprinter. The French decided to land in IAM Cycling. The Swiss is a team on the rise and they need to diversify their chances of getting good results. In principle Gallopin should be a more important rider than Mark Cavendish but they will most likely follow different calendars during the season.

He did the same last year and lost the GC because he crashed in the last stage. Let's see if he can manage to hold on to his bike this time. Smile

www.footiegame.net/images/Banderas/24/cn.png Tour of Beijing

Stage 5: Tiananmen Square - Bird's Nest

www.footiegame.net/images/pcm/05TB16 - Profile.jpg

The last stage of the Tour of Beijing will be the last of the season. It will be a goodbye party for the teams and riders as the stage is completely flat and only 118 kilometers long. Most of the stage will be a circuit of 7.5 kilometers around the main venues of the 2008 Olympics. The finish line will be placed in front of the Brid's Nest, the Olympic Stadium. In terms of racing the stage should be a mass sprint as a surprise attack would probably be too difficult.

www.footiegame.net/images/pcm/05TB16 - IntSprint.jpg

There was not a break of the day before the first intermediate sprint. Lots of riders had tried to attack but the teams of the sprinters had managed to retain the control of the race so far. With 79 kilometers to go it was Kenny van Hummel who beat Marcel Kittel and Alexander Kristoff to get the maximum points. They were already in the final circuit were most of the stage would be raced. Mark Renshaw did not fight for the points but was still retaining the points' jersey provisionally.

www.footiegame.net/images/pcm/05TB16 - Peloton.jpg

The peloton did not let any other attempt to take a bit of time at the front and they reached the 2nd intermediate sprint, with 7 laps to go, with the sprinters ready to fight for maximum points. It was Alexander Kristoff who took the points this time around ahead of Marcel Kittel and Kenny van Hummel. Astana, LottoNL and Euskaltel were the teams most committed to holding everything together and they were successful so far.

www.footiegame.net/images/pcm/05TB16 - Break.jpg

Once the 2nd sprint was over there was a very quiet time in the peloton as the riders understood that it was not worth it to attack. The riders were probably tired of a very long season and willing to go on holiday during the winter. It was not until 20 kilometers to go that Nick Nuyens decided to give it a go. It was his last racing day with BMC and he would like to repay the faith they put in him. With 10 km to go he still had 30 seconds over the bunch but his chances were slim at best.

www.footiegame.net/images/pcm/05TB16 - Trains.jpg

Nick Nuyens was eventually caught back in the last lap around the circuit. LottoNL and Astana soon formed their sprint trains. It would be Bernhard Eisel working for Kenny Van Hummel in the Dutch team, while Mark Renshaw appeared from nowhere to sit on his wheel. Meanwhile, Luca Paolini was ready to do another good lead out for Marcel Kittel. Elia Viviani, who has proven to be in top shape was behind. Other sprinters that were well positioned included Ben Swift, Andre Greipel and Alexander Kristoff.

www.footiegame.net/images/pcm/05TB16 - Sprint.jpg

The two sprint trains remained very close to each other as they closed in to the last kilometer of the season. However, Marcel Kittel decided to go from very far out. It did not look like a good decision given the head wind at the final straight. On the right hand side of the road Jurgen Roelandts and Giacomo Nizzolo had already started their sprint as well but they were dragging Lloyd Mondory behind, a very dangerous competitor. Luckily, there were no crashes as they had been very common in the last couple of years when this circuit was raced.

www.footiegame.net/images/pcm/05TB16 - Sprint2.jpg

Giacomo Nizzolo finished the race with good legs and he managed to get to the front of the group with 600 meters to go. However, having started the sprint from that far out is going to penalize both him and Jurgen Roelandts. Lloyd Mondory could benefit from the tow that the 2 of them gave him and he climbed to the 3rd position at that point. On the other side of the road it was Marcel Kittel ahead of Kenny van Hummel but a few other sprinters could well be in the mix.

www.footiegame.net/images/pcm/05TB16 - Finish.jpg

Lloyd Mondory wins in Beijing! It was a move based both in being clever and having the legs from the French. He did not have much support from his teammates but chose the wheels to follow wisely to grab his 8th win of the season. Quickstep will surely be very satisfied of how the season ended. Elia Viviani came from behind to get another 2nd place ahead of Ben Swift. Kenny van Hummel and Marcel Kittel completed the top 5 of the stage.

The winner of the overall classification was Tiago Machado as he only had to stay in the bunch after his exhibition yesterday. Nevertheless, he had lost the race last season due to a crash so he will be more than happy to be able to climb to the top of the podium. He will be joined by a very surprising Mark Renshaw and by Frank Schleck. Renshaw announced yesterday that he will be leaving the Discovery Channel team at the end of the season so it is unclear how much the management of the team will celebrate his podium.

Thank you for another exciting season! David Lopez the clear winner of the WT, Vanendert and Ten Dam deserve the other two spots in the top 3. A nice mixture of nations and teams in the individual top 15. Despite what I said earlier Kittel was the best sprinter this season.

Transfer market update 4

Robert Kiserlovski did not get to renew for Lotto - Soudal as his former team decided to go for Cadel Evans instead. However, it was clear that the Croatian would have several good options after finishing 3rd in the Giro d'Italia. He finally found his new home at Discovery Channel, where he will have to share the stage races with Jean-Christophe Peraud. It is said that the American team is in the market for a good sprinter but they don't have too many good options left.

There was much movement in Team Katusha as they brought a few riders to the team. Mikel Nieve will be yet another climber for the Russian team, which lost Simone Ponzi. Rein Taaramae renewed his contract for a further 2 seasons with a big improvement in his salary. They also announced in the last few hours that Marco Marcato will also ride with the team coming from BMC. The Italian puncheur will bring something different to the team but nothing as good as what Ponzi gave them.

Etixx - Quickstep also made a few more movements in the transfers market. Bart de Clercq was the most important of the riders arriving in the team but the signings were in general low profile. The best result for the Belgian was a 5th position in the Tour de Pologne. The second new rider was Thibaut Pinot, who will sign a 1 year contract with the Belgian team. Pierre Rolland also renewed his contract with the team but his performances have been underwhelming this season.

The last interesting piece of news was the transfer of Vasil Kiryienka to IAM Cycling. The Belarusian kept a low profile in general this season but managed to win a stage in the Vuelta a España. He should be a good complement to Mathias Frank and Tony Gallopin. He will be in the Swiss team for 3 seasons, earning 700.000 euros per year. It is a very risky bet for a rider that will be 31 years old next season.

Looks like Team Katusha are going to be a force next season.

Kittel earned a lot of points being 2nd at Sanremo. Otherwise he was not that impressive this season.

I just wanted to post to confirm that the story is not dead but the editing of the database from one season to the next one takes a while. In the meantime, this is a reminder of how the calendar will look like next season.

Also, as I am growing the calendar every season I will start to report only the results of some races from this season onwards. Nevertheless, I only plan to do so for the National Championships and a couple of classics on 2017.
