It came early! My first ever Zwift ride was today - 8th on KoM and Climb (hill course) but 44th on the sprint - so lightweight  - were my PBs. Absolutely loved it and would recommend anyone at least take the free trial

While I do see the fun with Zwift I just can't bring myself to ride indoors, I bet it's fun but I have way much more fun riding outside rain,hail,wind or sunshine (actually ride at night a fair bit)

I prefer outdoor riding too by a lot , but no streetlights where I live and being such a lightweight in the wind, as well as time restraints, make it worth it for me at least

So very jealous of you guys getting to ride those iconic euro climbs, we have real mountains down here in Oz but I think I'd go NUCLEAR if I had the chance to ride the climbs you guys have over there

Hi guys,
Just bought an entry level bike to commute to work, test out a few climbs in a few months when summer hits Melbourne. Can someone have a look at the specs and let me know whats good, whats bad about the bike. I'll be getting new pedals this week, but would love to start knowing what parts of the bike are most crucial.

Perfect entry level bike!!! 105 is a quality groupset so you won't have to upgrade that for quite sometime, the first thing I'd change before hitting the hills would be the cassette, having a 11-28 or 12-28 on the back with the compact crankset you have on the front and there isn't a hill you won't get up. The biggest upgrade you could make with that bike would be the wheelset, those Alex Rims with Quando hubs are serviceable but heavy. the only other thing over time would be the brakeset, the Tektro's are okay but a little flexy (but perfectly safe) so getting a better brakeset such as Shimano 105's upwards would be a nice upgrade. The saddle might be okay but that's another that you might want to look at changing over time, saddles are very particular so you might end up trying out a few different ones to find the right one.
If you need any advice on hill clmibing around Melbourne and surrounds then post in here and I can give you plenty of suggestions, I'm from Melbourne (Box Hill) and I ride ALOT!!! with most of my time climbing

What Strydz said. Biggest thing for me would be to have a cassette that goes to at least 28. I currently ride with an 11-32 wide ratio and am glad for the granny gear when taking it easier on 12-15%+ sections - it means I can keep spinning without going deep on the steep stuff but I do prefer to climb at a higher cadence compared to most and 28 would be fine for many on a full compact (50/34) such as this bike (or indeed seen on most road bikes these days).
The 12-25 is not a major problem, it just means your cadence will have to be lower on steeper climbs, which might be the way you naturally prefer anyway.
I'd brush up your maintenance early on too. GCN Maintenance playlist on YouTube is great for that. Enjoy!

Thanks Strydz and Ian. I've been hooked on watching cycling since the Tdf 2005. Actually went to France last year and saw the last 4 stages. Walked 8km up Alpe d'huez it was amazing. Decided it's time to take the plunge. Would YouTube be enough to get my knowledge up not just in maintenance but all things cycling? Any websites or blogs I should read?
Pedals, thinking Shimano PD 550 and will get some matching Shimano shoes. Seems like Shimano is a reputable brand. |

I have used very similar Shimano pedals and they have been perfectly fine, just find somewhere quiet to start the initial ride so you practice clipping/unclipping for 10 or 15 minutes to get used to it before it becomes instinct. You will have to keep it in mind just for the first couple of rides then it becomes natural - that's if you've never used clipless pedals of course.
I'd also leave them on the minimum binding strength to begin with (usually how they arrive out of the box) so if you have a moment then your foot is likely to pull free anyway. |

Got Tourmalet down and dusted. First ride contained Tourmalet from both sides. Today I did the climb a third time, going extra hard. For me the side from Saint Marie du Campan is better because hardly any easy km and constant steepness of around 9%. It is tougher this way, however the side of Luz Saint has the better scope and view.
23 mins slower than Gesink on the last 6 miles of Tourmalet. Good enough, considering I am.mostly, almost exclusively running nowadays
Also did a 100k ride with Aspin (Payolle)-Peyresourde-Aspi (Tour side). Aspin almost made me bonk hard in the last 5k but pulled thru. Love the Peyresourde tho.
Maybe I can sneak in Galibier- Alpe combo in the next few day and if we make a stop on the way home

Insane Shonak. Would love to have a proper go in the Alps, will probably be next year.
For now Im chilling in Harzen, pretty tough terrains, 2-5 km climbs, up and down. Much like Piemonte, but I would like to ride a real mountain soon.
Got 80 km today tho, totally wasted now |

First ride today on the new bike. Wow it kicks mountain bike butt! Very happy with the performance, although the comfort level dips a bit on the variable bike paths in Melbourne. |

Long road trip with bike at the back of the car. Downhilled sakar pass, looking at the route i think there were 9 hairpins in 8 kilometers with an -8%. Road has 2 car width so it was no trouble but really dont have the balls to downhill fast.. Great experience finding those Downhills in a flatish West Turkey. (You can find videos of the downhill, Sakar Pass.)

I really like Nibs blue sunglasses, so I recently bought myself a pair of similiar blue sunglasses. Yesterday, I rode up my long (home) climb up to Kühtai. On the top, two cyclists were coming down. One of them pointed at me, and the other said: "Those sunglasses, I'd like too!"

4 hrs ride with rain and 8 degrees the whole way today tops the worst august in Oslo ever. Floods in the city and temperatures like november. Global heating does not exist for the moment. |
