 Tour du Poitou-Charentes (2.1) Meanwhile in France, we had a quite succesfull race. We started with a second place for  Manuel MartÃnez at the first (flat) stage. Stage 2 ended in a bunch sprint of a heavily reduced pack with Armindo Fonseca outsprinting the others. Ion Izagirre survived the hills. Stage 3 again ended with a small group sprinting for the victory. Ion performed a superb lead out for Martinez and Manuel took his very first pro win. Stage 7 was not too hard, but still. All GC contenders would have to pay attention in the bumpy finale, spiced up with several short climbs.
 Diego Ochoa made his move early on, with two climbs left. He passed the last survivors of the breakway, but his move had come a bit too early, as Rubén Fernández came back in the last descent.He came, flew by, and won the stage, in front of Diego, as our leader  Ruben Guerreiro lost some more time in the overall standings. Stage 8 was a new chance for whoever came to win the green jersey. At the end Carlos Barbero was glued to the wheel of  Danny Van Poppel, sitting behind the sovereign Etixx train. Nacer Bouhanni won the stage and extended his lead in the points classfications, as Carlos earned our team another nice second place. Next up was a chance for the mountain goats at stage 9. We were curious how good our Portuguese leader Ruben Guerreiro would do. Finally Eder Chávarri had managed to join the breakaway, together with some strong climbers such as  Valerio Agnoli , former mountain jersey winner Nicolas Edet and Clement Chevrier. Agnoli, Chevrier and Chávarri were the strongest and started the final climb together. Their goal was to be able to raise the hand atop the Rassos de Peguera. It's Chevrier who cracked first. Agnoli tried to shake off Chávarri too, but he came back every time and the Italian seemed to crack now... It came down to a close call, but the stage win was ours, and Eder's of course! Nairo Quintana was the best of the favourites but the red leader jersey still did not move onto the shoulders of the Colombian. A top 5 is nice but I'm happier with the stage we won Guerreiro is currently 17th, 8'03" down on Yates.

Don't think Eder will go for the GC though, as he will most likely lose tons of time at the long time trial coming later. We'll probably let him go for stage wins

Stage 10 brought a new opportunity for the KoM jersey contenders. We sent Beñat Intxausti out there, and apart from the Hors Catégorie climb, where he came second, he gathered a maximum of points at the first three climbs. But then his move was over. At the last climb, Nairo Quintana and Adam Yates showed there's no doubt they're the best climbers this year. Meanwhile Ruben Guerreiro tried to stay in the second group, which also contained Froome, Louis Meintjes and Merhawi Kudus. In the end the Quintana won after a thrilling sprint, as Guerreiro came home in 8th place, which allowed him to jump from 17th to 13th place in the general classification. Yates kept the red jersey though. A chance for the punchers at stage 11, but not before Intxausti had once again bagged lots of vital points for the blue polka-dot jersey. We worked for Carlos Barbero, but good old Alejandro Valverde decided differently. El Imbatido took over a minute on the pack, where Carlos Barbero sprinted to another second place. Stage 12 to the city of Logroño could have meant the end for Eder Chávarri's GC ambitions. He didn't survive the echelons and would drop way down in the overall standings, from place 8 to place 20. Caleb Ewan won the bunch sprint as he pack caught the breakaway at the line. Barbero suffered, got boxed in and finished in eleventh. Stage 13 was another chance for Nairo Quintana to catch up with Adam Yates, but the breakaway could have a chance too.
Eder Chávarri aimed for his second stage win, as he just feels more comfortable riding out front. At the first climb already he brought down the amount of riders in the breakaway from 16 to about half that much.
Valerio Agnoli who had bridged from the pack at that first climb, conserved his energy a tad better than Eder did. Our Basque breakaway specialist had to be happy with a solid second place. The Italian winner also revived the battle for the KoM jersey.
Behind Guerreiro had a very, very good day as he only lost time to the new red jersey wearer Nairo Quintana himself. Ruben entered the top 10 as he jumped to 9th.
The sprinters missed out on on of their last chances as the breakaway survived at stage 14, due to the late reaction of the sprinter teams.
Lampre's Eugenio Alafaci secured the most prestigious win of his career so far, while Carlos Barbero sprinted to the 10th place. The 52 km long time trial at stage 15 would change the GC top 10 drastically. As Ryan Mullen won it, Ruben Guerreiro put in the best time of all the other guys and jumped to sixth place, close to current white jersey wearer Kudus. Quintana extended his lead and him winning this Vuelta seems just a matter of time now. Starting with stage 16, three consecutive summit finishes would decide whoever was going to take the red jersey and this Vuelta title home. Beñat Intxausti joined the breakaway, but soon already it became clear they wouldn't stand a chance. Ruben Guerreiro didn't handle the diversified final climb well, and lost two minutes to some of the others top 10 riders. Red jersey Quintana had to give it several tries, but ultimately he managed to drop Adam Yates and won the stage. Intxausti kept up with the second group and finished in fourth, grabbing some extremely valuable points for the blue polka dot jersey. Stage 17 and once again it was breakaway time for Intxausti. But at the first climb already he had to let the others go for the KoM points. That allowed Valerio Agnoli to bring the gap down to less than 15 points. Luckily, he did not win the stage from the breakaway. As fellow escapee Fabio Duarte did, Agnoli and Intxausti came home in third and fourth respectively. Guerreiro only lost time to leader Nairo Quintana, the then second Adam Yates and Alejandro Valverde. At stage 18, Intxausti immediately made up for the lost advantage by winning the first two KoM sprints. Sadly enough, he had to let the other breakaway guys go at the longer, but unsteep first category climb.

Omar Fraile joined the bound breakaway, but soon it became clear that him nor one his breakaway companions would win. Eventually Omar and Dimension Data's veteran Dani Navarro let Katusha's Sacha Modolo fight the losing battle on his own as they both dropped back.
In the end Ion Izagirre reeled in Modolo himself in the penultimate lap. He tried to hold on to his small advantage in the descent. He didn't succeed, and neither did a short-lived attack of the Polish former world champion Michał Kwiatkowski just over the last but one climb last.
It would come down to an uphill sprint as the strong Tinkoff team made the first to groups come together. Sagan was cooked, and Bardet set the pace. Ion felt good, but got boxed in when he wanted to launch.
When he could finally made his move, he had to dig deep to catch up with Bardet. But the winner would certainly be one of these two.
And in the very end, Ion's bike throw was slightly better than the one performed by Romain Bardet. With no mountain stages left, the flatter stages 19 and 20 offered chances for the breakaway. We had a guy in the breakaway twice... ... but both Aldo Lature ... ... and Diego Ochoa failed to win, as they finished stage 19 and 20 in eigth and fifth place respectively. And at the concluding mountain time trial at the Puerto de Guadarrama , overall winner Nairo Quintana dotted the i's one final time. Only some Italian races left before the World Championships:
Coppa Bernocchi ended in a bunch sprint, as the ascents of the Piccolo Stelvio turned out to be not hard enough to cause a separation. Carlos Barbero jumped onto the back of the Orica train, but he was forced to fourth place by Bora's Kristian Sbaragli. An early launch... ... was the right move for the win, as Barbero easily outsprinted the others. The two riders at the right had been doubled at that point. The Memorial Marco Pantani had some harder climbs, but still it was not enough to cause a big separation. A bunch sprint would occur in the streets of Cesenatico after a few short and pan flat local laps.  Jonathan Klever gained an advantage after having moved at a time of hesitation and his move made it. First pro win for him here.Finally the GP Industria was the hardest race, with several steeper climbs along the route. Once again not a chance for the breakaway. Zardini attacked to force the other teams to work, as both Izagirre and Barbero could just drift along with the pack. Our Italian rider was reeled in on home soil, and Ion tried to lead out Carlos properly... ... as Carlos made it three consecutive wins out of only three tries!
