The Tour de France only finished in Le Bettex once, and it was in 1990(stage 10) when Thierry Claveyrolat won from a long breakaway while Pedro Delgado attacked from the pack and gained 19 seconds while Steve Bauer, the yellow jersey, was 50th 4:07 down as he lost the yellow to LeMond's teammate Pensec though they didn't climb Amerands from Vervex that day as they came to junction directly from Megeve, not going to Vervex.Anyone who knows the area good though can inform me as that is the most I got from Google maps and could be wrong.

The results that day:

1. Thierry Claveyrolat en 3h24'31"
2. Ampler à 1'54"
3. Mottet
4. Montoya à 2'10"
5. Lejarreta
6. Boyer
7. Delgado
8. Winterberg à 2'11"
9. Conti à 2'24"
10. LeMond à 2'29"
11. Rooks
12. Indurain
13. Alcala
14. Criquielion
15. Kelly
16. Pensec
17. Ruiz-Cabestany
18. Biondi
19. Breukink
20. Chiappucci
21. Palacio
22. N.Rodriguez
23. Philipot
24. Bugno
25. Delion
26. Hampsten
27. Parra à 2'39"
28. P.Simon à 2'46"
29. Martinez-Torres à 3'07"
30. Fuerte

In Criterium du Dauphine last year(stage 7) though Le Bettex was featured truly from the side it will be featured today. And Christopher Froome attacked and won the stage as Van Garderen who came 2nd took the yellow from Nibali who was way far his formeven though he got it after an epic stage to Villard de Lans the day before.Froome would attack and drop Van Garderen next day to win both the stage and the GC.

The results that day:

1 FROOME, Christopher (SKY) 4:24:17
2 VAN GARDEREN, Tejay (BMC) + 17
3 MEINTJES, Louis (MTN) + 41
4 INTXAUSTI ELORRIAGA, Benat (MOV)
5 RODRIGUEZ OLIVER, Joaquin (KAT) + 54
6 BARDET, Romain (ALM) + 1:08
7 VUILLERMOZ, Alexis (ALM) + 1:15
8 TALANSKY, Andrew (TCG) + 1:25
9 FARIA DA COSTA, Rui Alberto (LAM) + 1:34
10 NAVARRO GARCIA, Daniel (COF) + 1:45

The Tour de France also finished on Saint-Gervais in 1992(stage 12) and from what I understand it was an aggressive stage as Rolf Jaermann won 3 seconds ahead of Pedro Delgado(super-dom of Indurain) and 39 seconds ahead of Stephen Roche.

This will be the first time that the Tour visits Mont Bisanne.

Also that first uncaterogised "rise"...

Greg Henderson is a good source of info tonight - 5 facts about roommate De Gendt from his feed:

#1. Never warms up for TT'S. Just goes full.
#2. @DeGendtThomas never get massage. Ever. Likes the tension on his legs.
#3.To get in the break..he sits @500w 4 5min. Then he knows who holds his wheel will be strong enough to ride and he will drop them later.
#4. Still runs the old iPhone 4. Says it means his eyesight is still perfect. Screen is so small.
#5. Eats a bag of "happy pills" every night. Aka M&M's. @DeGendtThomas is my new hero.

I think Froome / Sky will help Porte to get up on the podium today.

How considerate of them Pfft

On a serious note, my prediction for today is attacks from Aru, Bardet and Porte. They're the only ones who look capable of getting away from the Sky train at the moment, and I don't think Froome is overly worried about their progress. Also think Mollema will likely lose one or even two positions today. He looked to be struggling yesterday. Nairo and Yates to take up the podium spots after today, not necessarily in that order (I'd be happy if Mollema proves me wrong, coz it's about time he got on the podium in a GT)

Edit: And Arberg, I don't disagree with you entirely...

Look we the same race?
Porte and Froome works together and not others can follow Poels.

That almost sounds like me! I never warm up before any intense riding effort, I never get a massage, instead of the 500w as it's more like 400w, I still run an iPhone 4 and I eat a bag of happy pills but they are not M&M's Wink

I have watched a decent volume of stages. It has reminded me of 2012 and 2014 tours in that we have a rather tedious situation of one rider (or one team) being so much stronger than everyone else. Having a chrono after two of the more (at least on paper) difficult climbs has not helped - Froome saving himself for those other than the two strategic sneak time gains. This race will likely be remembered for that ventoux freak show.

Astana at least looked powerful a couple of days ago and unlike Movistar they are not desperately fighting for the team classiment so they should be able to go all in these last two mountain days. I would expect something from BMC, but they seem to me somewhat reluctant about Porte who is rather doing damage himself. I hope we see something from them and not pointless movistar team class shaninighans.

Yates and Mochema to lose buckets is what I am expecting really in the next couple of days. These two are talking follow follow follow, Yates rather reminds of the new Purito a last kilo quickshot if ever there was one.

Minekeys is an interesting one. Been expecting him to fall off, but he has steadily sneaked into top ten (admittedly unspectacularly following).

Another interesting sidenote is there has been far less doping talk in general on the race, guess there are likely to be more stories in and aorund the Olympics. I do wonder whether we are on the verge of peeling back the curtain on other sports at long last, though cycling is still a long way from clean.

I suppose the lack of familiar climbs has made data crunching much more difficult for the psuedo-men.

It is much more exciting than expected. Froome is far above all others as always, but the podium is really exciting, more than expected!

Maybe Quintana can fight about second place next year, if there is not much time trial, otherwise must he go after fifth place or Giro.

My concern is that we just see this sit and follow the black and blue train or even more hilarious stick Nibali/Valv/Rosa at front or black/blue power meter beasts. Clearly this is the type of riding the young wheelsuckers Minekeys/Yates kilo attack man/Mochema prefers.

They all know how Sky will ride, they have to take a risk. Burn your men hard early on Bisanne and then jump - also if you see someone make a ballsy move back yourself and go with. Go man to man with Yates/Mechema if he is better so be it. Nothing to lose. Just follow and attack in last kilo is not going to work.

The only way this stage lights up is with Astana going full throttle, Aru is a proven third week rider so they will be going for it over the next 2 days with all the riders above Aru outside of Froome and possibly Porte, Bardet looking shaky so a podium spot isn't out of the question for Aru. I actually think Aru has performed quite well in his first Tour

The problem is that realistically no one has a chance of catching Froome. Are the riders in the top 5 really going to gamble their top 5 place for 2nd place at best? Riders like Yates and Mollema are happy with their position in the top 5 so won't attack. Quintana is incapable.

The only riders who may try something are Aru (probably not strong enough) and Porte (No team) but Froome has shown time and time again that he's stronger than both riders and has a much stronger team on top.

The only way Froome can be beaten is if the other top 5 or 6 riders work together. But that will never happen. Or a crash obviously.

Unfortunately it's the same as in all sport. When you have a dominant athlete or team it usually gets quite boring. Look at Usain Bolt, Serena Williams, PSG, Bayern Munich...

@ringo: I am saying forget Froome (which is what Porte is doing) let him ride on your wheel.

Ah yeah I remember that Dauphine stage quite well Smile I hope Porte will not have the off day today, so he can finish fourth. I actually do hope Mollema and Yates end up on the podium, as they deserve it.

Yeah, I get that. But realistically most of the riders will be happy with their place in the top 5 or so. Are they really going to risk attacking a long way out to move up one or two places at best when they could lose several minutes if it all goes wrong?

Is there really much difference between finishing 2nd or 4th. Or 3rd or 5th. Either way it won't matter in a few weeks. 1st place is all that matters.

Riders like Yates, Mollema and Aru will probably be happy with a top 5 finish so why risk it and risk dropping down the standings?

I disagree. Standing on podium in Paris matters. Bardet, Porte, Aru and maybe even Quintana (?) must at least try to destroy Mollema or Yates.

Maybe for Froome/Sky yeah, and maybe Quintana. But for Mollema, Yates, Bardet etc then ofc the podium means alot. Big differance for riders like that to look back on there career if they have a 3rd place in TDF compared to a 5h...

But if you're 4th on GC is it worth going all out to finish 3rd and end up finishing 7th? That's my point.

Yates, Mollema and Aru are all relatively young. They will be happy with a top 5 finish. Are they going to risk that place by attacking early or are they going to sit on the Sky train and guarantee their position and maybe move up a place if another rider cracks.

Also the teams will also have more of a say then the riders. Orica and Trek will both be happy with a top 5 finish and will tell their riders to follow Sky. Movistar and Astana are the only teams who may want to push on but they don't have teams strong enough to do it.

Therefore I don't think anything will happen until the last climb today.

I agree Mollema and Yates will try to defend their places. It won't be about Froome today, I expect (hope) we'll see battle for 2nd and 3rd. Mollema already showed some weakness and looks vulnerable. And honestly, I can't still believe Yates won't have any single bad day here.
