Army will have to back down, Erdogan supporters now in force and remember at least 50% of country supports him, Erdogan will stay.

But hopefully this show the nutters at EU Turkey is in no state to join EU, to think that they are even considering it strongly shows that EU is a total mess.

The army, at least a good portion of it, who carried out the Coup, offered the people their rights back, but they instead went to the street and yelled "Alluh Ahkbah". If this isn't a wake up call for EU and the US i don't know what is. They should be kicked out of Nato, surely it will weaken the alliance, but having a member that gets more and more radical in it's religious believes and no longer value some of the core things in a democracy, has in my opinion no place in Nato, and for that matter not in the EU either.

This was the chance for the Turkish people to have freedom and rights, but they decided on their religion instead.

Who is the "brain" behind the army coup? Is that known?

They did the coup to protect human right they're saying? so that's why they're shooting people?

Well, i don't think they counted on a massive mop of people trying to get to them. And things went out of hands completly. I don't know if the COUP members are sincere in their message, but i choice to believe that they are.

But obviously when you start shooting at people with a chopper and stuff, things have gone horribly wrong Sad

Saw someone worried about ISIS above, they shouldn't be too big a problem from a land-control standpoint. Coalition has slowly been pushing them back since Jan 2015, they are in no position to make big land grabs from this.

I will say this about Turkey, I'm not for the military coup, but their president is a scheming, paranoid, corrupt bastard, and if he stays in power through this, the freedoms of the people there will only decrease from the current low standards. Also Turkey should not be let into the EU anytime soon.

A coup in Turkey can't not work without violence when large population is against secular government and for Islamist controlled country.

In the past Turkish Army could coup and get secular leader (as they did 4 past in recent years). But this in modern times will simply won't work...

No, Erdogan has been leading for to long, and has infested the people with more radical islam. The millitary was to late, and the people choice more religion and less democracy. Their choice, but the West also has a choice to make imo.

The problem is West can't cut ties with Turkey as they hold many Syrian refugees. If they cut a deal, Turkey just lets them all across the border and boom Europe is in even greater havoc than it currently finds itself. West has to appease Turkey and there's nothing West can do at the moment.

Yes that is indeed the problem for the EU nations. They are dealing with a man that is straight up blackmailing them.

The brain behind the Coup has just surrendered himself according to Twitter reports.

''The world has not gone crazy... It's always been crazy. Only difference is now we stream it live from our smartphones.''

The amount of people being paranoid on twitter over something that only 20 years ago was a monthly thing in many countries is quite startling. Many says how can a coup occur in NATO nation  Turkey had about 5 coups now since joining NATO..
I don't expect many people to know history of Turkey or Ataturk and what he did, but the general ignorance of pretty general history makes me sick lately. But can I blame them, the only topic in schools is WW2 and that topic starts and ends all the history people seem to learn..

I've read on reddit that it's not fully over yet. Round 2 starts now. I wish, that the coup succeeds.
