Sibiu Cycling Tour (2.1)

An extremely successful race was followed by one where one might not even have noticed we were participating. Louis Vervaeke wins the first mountain stage and keeps his advantage until the very end. Our guys Hector Saez and Edoardo Zardini didn't climb with the best but they both manage to finish within the top 10 nonetheless.

This was a less silent race for us, but we didn't get any better than fifth. Hill specialist Diego Ochoa couldn't follow the best of the race, too bad. Carlos Barbero proved he's getting better at hills as well and came in ninth. Sergey Chernetskiy outsprinted Rubén Fernández and Miguel Lopez for the win.

Some interesting new young riders comming to the team, and the more experienced Gorka should be a great addition the overall strenght of the team.

Solid results in these two races indeed, but you might want to check the previous page as well Smile

The young and less young riders will hopefully add the quality we'll need in the WT, if we manage to get there.

CIRCUITO DE GETXO (1.1)
i.imgur.com/4pOfkAu.png
An on paper easy looking race in the Basque Country was decided just where it had to be decided if one wanted to avoid a sprint. At the penultimate climb, Diego Ochoa attacked, countered by Tinkoff's Daniel Teklehaimanot. On their way to the line, the two of them?
i.imgur.com/AAChou0.png
He had to give it several tries, but in the end Diego Ochoa wins it! Daniel Teklehaimanot comes 22" later, while at the bunch sprint Movistar's Rubén Fernández beats Carlos Barbero for third.

CLÁSICA SAN SEBASTIÁN (WT)
i.imgur.com/Th1mZrD.png
The traditional post-Tour classic didn't include the Bordako Tontorra this year, so Carlos Barbero might have a unique chance to win this one. Diego Ochoa tried to do better than his second place of last year, when he lost the sprint to a strong Julian Alaphilippe.
i.imgur.com/HkqDD58.png
Ednaldo Luiz Cortes rode his first race for us as a part of his stagiaire contract. He gives the pack a hand keeping the escapees within reach at the first ascent of Alto de Jaizkibel and Alto Arkale. But in the descent, Carlos Barbero crashed. He comes back though.
i.imgur.com/g0CpCFw.png
At the second ascent of Alto Arkale three guys create a gap, and Beñat Intxausti sacrificed himself to bring them back. Carlos Barbero was long gone as after all he did suffer from his crash. Preparing the sprint, Diego Ochoa chose to start in second place, with Julian Alaphilippe attentively sitting in his wheel.
i.imgur.com/0WgYY5C.png
Diego launched early and looked good for the win, like, really good. But being a bit audacious, he raised his arms too early, and got Zabel'd at the line. Heartbreak there, but Julian Alaphilippe took a second consecutive win in the Basque Country's most important cycling classic.

VUELTA A BURGOS (2.HC)
i.imgur.com/y1Q2uSC.png
Our last race before the Vuelta - yes, we did receive a wildcard this year Pfft - was a silent one. We lacked power in the sprinter stages, even though Ion Izagirre got a fifth place in an uphill sprint. The difficult queen stage was won by the later overall winner, Lotto Soudal's Robert Power. We returned with the mountain jersey for Heiner Parra and a 7th place overall for Ion Izagirre in the bag.

A top 10 is always nice Smile as to him not racing the Vuelta, he already has the Giro in the legs and we're not sure he's raced enough to peak at another GT. He'll attend the Tour du Poitou-Charentes instead before leading our team at the GP de Québec Wink

Thanks to you both. No idea if we'll go for a good GC position or not, we'll have to see how Guerreiro's doing. Intxausti, Chávarri, Barbero and Ochoa should be able to compete for a stage win too Smile

The opening team time trial went surprisingly well, as we finished in 8th place, 31" slower than the winning team of Giant - Alpecin. The young German Wilfried Köhler moved into the first jersey rojo.

Usually the sprinters don't get too many chances in Spain, but this time the next two stages were designed for them already. Former French champion Nacer Bouhanni grabbed the first chance with both hands and won stage 2, as Carlos Barbero chose the wrong wheel and came home in 15th place and another German, Jasha Sütterlin, moved into the red jersey thanks to better stage finishes.

Time for stage 3 already and Beñat Intxausti tried to conquer the first KoM sprint, but he failed. He only came third and saw Lampre-Merida's Eugenio Alafaci taking the blue polka dot jersey for now.
i.imgur.com/6yQT4ZH.png
Caleb Ewan wins the sprint in front of green jersey Nacer Bouhanni, while Carlos Barbero had a better day and finished in fourth! The red jersey once again moved to other shoulders, this time around those of the world champion himself, John Degenkolb.

Stage 4 could have been the first test for the GC guys, but things turned out differently. Etixx just tore the pack apart on the flat and a lot of favourites lost tons of time. In the end Davide Cimolai surprisingly beat red jersey John Degenkolb. Diego Ochoa finished in 6th while the first GC guys, Nairo Quintana, Daniel Martin and Adam Yates lost almost 3 minutes.
i.imgur.com/lU5BvVN.png
The GC contenders were eager to show themselves, while Diego enjoyed the only stage during which he would wear the white jersey.

i.imgur.com/8cbeATe.png

Beñat Intxausti attacked for a third consecutive time, and finally he was lucky. He won several KoM sprints but the strange points system did not allow him to come much closer to the jersey holder.

i.imgur.com/6GDfeT8.png

The stage ended with Nairo Quintana just toying with the others, but Adam Yates fought and didn't allow him to take a single second apart from the bonification. Ruben Guerreiro had a good day too as he finished in 9th place, jumping to 21st in the GC for now.
i.imgur.com/AkGjtXZ.png
A new chance for the sprinters arose at stage 6...

i.imgur.com/H7Upx3V.png

... and a close battle of the jerseys was won by John Degenkolb. Another solid result for Carlos Barbero as he came home in fifth.
