I guess I should've put Pfft at the end. Pfft

But what does the yellow jersey matter? Isn't winning the last stage in it just as good as winning it and the last stage together? And there are heaps of riders like Garin who would've done that if they had the yellow Jersey in the early tours.

It doesn't matter at all. I think people are just trying to belittle Cavendish's stage win tally. good luck to them!

How do you know? Are you The Oracle from The Matrix? In Dauphine he was at least just as good as it Dauphine 2013 and Tour we have not seen anything yet.

I actually think the point of the original tweet was to say that 29 sprint wins were more impressive to the tweeter (it's a very subjective thing) than the stage wins of Merckx and Hinault with all the TT wins.

The road stages being that bit less predictable while the TT's are largely dependent on being able to put out controlled, sustained power in an ordered environment.

As I say it's very subjective but an interesting stat I thought.

Froome has never been on his 2013 level since. If he suddenly just crushes the two first MTFs and then the ITT, then I've been mistaken.

I think thats a big mistake, but its obviously VERY subjective.

I rate Hinault's victories much higher, despite much less road race victories and less victories overall. Sticking your nose in the wind for 200 metres will never be victories that inspires and impresses me compared to trashing the best riders in the world, the biggest motors, on a flat ITT or out climbing the best climbers in legendary terrain such as the Alps and Pyrenees. I understand people think differently and I know 29 victories indeed are 29 victories, but sitting in the bunch for 200 flat kms and come to the fore on the last couple of metres will never be wins I will appreciate relative to, say, how Hinault and Armstrong won their stages.

Well how can you rate Hinault over Merckx then? Eddy being the man who did it all from solo all day breaks, to mountain attacks, hill attacks, time trials and sprints.

Although we are trying to compare three different era's and three different types of rider. And let's be real, none of them could handle Bakari is he went to the tour Cool

Did someone get let loose with the felt tip pens for a bit of random colouring or is this actually accurate and interesting? Pfft

At face value it makes Mclay look even more impressive.

I don't, where did I write that? I simply compared Cav to Hinault and argued why I think its a mistake to rate his victories higher than a true champion as Hinault. Obviously Merckx is the greatest. Smile

Anyways, I also rate Cav's MSR in '09 higher that his WCRR. '11 Copenhagen was nothing but a glorified bunch sprint, while MSR was a testament to what Cav COULD do on his peak of his powers. I would be interested on what his own take would be on it.

@Riis - It was where i mentioned all three then you said specifically about Hinault (and Armstrong for some random choice Pfft), so i thought you rated Hinault over Merckx. Glad you don't think that!

As for MSR vs WCRR, Cav rates WC higher because it was a multi-year plan to do and he could finish off such a huge team effort in a close finish. Obviously MSR is a big result but it's not as big to Cav's as to some other traditionalists.
That said "At Speed", his most recent book, is next on my reading list once i get over this illness and reading won't give me a headache. So perhaps he's changed his mind Pfft

AH ok I see, yea it was kinda random, but just to put in perspective that I still rate 20 some victories in ITT's and MTF's higher than 29 bunch sprints.

I also think he rates the WCRR higher, obviously, there goes a jersey along the way and he still wears the stripes, but I just think MSR was a much greater performance in terms of how hard he could push his limits.

Sprint is much more than just acceleration. Unfortunately for them is Cavendish best ever to run sprint.
