 Giro d'Italia 2018 - stages 1-6 The prologue in  Herning saw a surprising winner, Etixx' Australian  Cameron Meyer, who beat his compatriat and former TDF prologue winner Rohan Dennis. Spain's ITT champion  Ion Izagirre, the team leader, had a great prologue and finishes in 8th, 24 seconds down on Cameron Meyer. A solid start but that was everything our team showed in Denmark.  Sam Bennett beat Bonifazio and  Kittel for stage 2 and stage 3 respectively. As soon as the Giro hit Italian soil it was time for the 30 km TTT. We did great as we only lost one minute, but Ion Izagirre dropped from 8th to 48th. At stage 5 Bonifazio got his revenge, winning over  Arnaud Démare and  Fernando Gaviria. Stage 6 finally suited us a bit more, a bumpy profile spiced up with some second and third category climbs. For us, Pello Bilbao joined the breakaway, trying to grab the Maglia Azzura for some days maybe. But surprisingly, he loses all KoM sprints to his breakaway companion  Kamil Gradek, on paper a far less good climber.
All of a sudden, 4 Tinkoff guys had opened up a gap, and the new Maglia Rosa  Andrey Amador was with them. Purito, Landa and  Oliveira dropped back, but then Fabio Aru sneaked away. Despite the reaction of the whole Katusha team, their leader  Bauke Mollema bridges on his own, dragging along Bardiani's  Sindre Lunke. The difference of 4 minutes came down in the hilly finale, where counter attacks from the pack occured. But the stage winner would be one of these 5 guys, and no-one else. Pello Bilbao launched his sprint early, knowing that it would be difficult to get someone back in a downhill sprint. But could he hold on?

Giro d'Italia - stages 7-12 Right after Bilbao's triumph, the riders would tackle the first mountain stage. Once again, the breakaway was reeled in very quickly, and suddenly Maglia Rosa Fabio Aru sneaked away again, together with his team mates Teklehaimanot, Amador and Oliveira. He left them behind at the final climb, and only his own team mate Mikel Landa was able to bridge. The Basque climber won the stage, while Fabio Aru extended his lead and Ion Izagirre jumped to third in the GC.
Stage 8 went to Mikel Landa too, as he escaped from the pack in the final kilometer and denied Ion Izagirre the stage win at Lago Laceno. Arnaud Démare won stage 9 in Frosinone, in front of his team mate Davide Cimolai. Ion Izagirre showed off his good legs once more, finishing the disorganized bunch sprint in fifth place.
Stage 10 was another summit finish, but the climb itself was not long and not steep at all. Having lost some time at the previous summit finish, Fabio Aru outsprinted the rest of the pack in Assissi and took some welcome boni seconds. Ion Izagirre took another fifth place. The day after, Etixx' Arnaud Démare would make it over the final bump some 10 kms before the finish and won stage 11 in Montecatini Terme, earning himself the Maglia Rossa, at least for now. Stage 12 brought the riders to Sestri Levante. Ruben Guerreiro gave it a try in the breakaway, but he couldn't follow the pace of Winner Anacona and Cameron Meyer. With two climbs and some 35 kms to go the break was over, and new a duo attacked. Decisive?
The answer was no. The duo did have almost a minute over the last summit, but they looked at each other too much. Ion Izagirre attacked in that final descent, and just before the last corner he joined Lilian Calmejane and  Clément Chevrier. Both were surprised when Ion immediately took the other side of the road... Spoiler
And Ion Izagirre brought the victory home, his second stage win ever here at the Giro!  Fabio Aru remained in pink. Giro d'Italia: stages 13-18 Stage 13 finally proved a breakaway could make it to the line in this Giro. UnitedHealthcare's  Rafael Andriato won the sprint of a four man group. Stage 14 was another Tinkoff showdown, as Mikel Landa left behind team leader and Maglia Rosa Fabio Aru for his third stage win so far. Ion Izagirre finished in fifth and managed to hold on to his beautiful podium spot. During Stage 15, Ion Izagirre decided to follow today's Tinkoff putsch. Mikel Landa worked for his leader but Ion Izagirre followed swiftly. Certain riders bridged, but they would have to pay for their efforts. At the final climb, Ion Izagirre dropped everyone and stage 15...

... was again for us! Suddenly the gap between Aru and Izagirre came down to less than 2 minutes, and he had shown weakness todayi Stage 16 ended with a short bump, where Team Sky's Enrico Battaglin once more showed his love for this race. Stage 17 would become a turning point. Tinkoff just ripped the pack apart, and Ion couldn't keep up this time. While our former teammate Hugh Carthy won a second consecutive stage for Sky, Fabio Aru put almost 5 minutes between him and Landa and Mollema, as Izagirre lost almost 8 minutes.
The pink dream was gone, but we still had a lot to fight for. Stage 18, the last chance for the sprinters, went to Bardiani's Davide Ballerini, while Démare came home in third, hoping these points would be enough for the Maglia Rossa. Giro d'Italia - conclusion Stage 19 was the first of two brutal mountain stage in the Dolomites. Fabio Aru let his luxury domestique go as Mikel Landa won his fourth stage. In the snow, Ion Izagirre finished in second and it seemed like that was when he secured his third place.
But stage 20 still included the Mortirolo and the Stelvio, two mythical Dolomite climbs. Bauke Mollema played his very last card and won the stage. Ion Izagirre fell without any domestiques. The gap between them at the Stelvio summit was over 13 minutes, and Ion fell of the podium. Ion's final time trial at stage 21 was somewhat disappointing, as Bauke Mollema put in a great ride. Mikel Landa had a bad day and lost his second place to the Dutchman. While Ruben Guerreiro finished with the seventh fastest time, Ion had to settle for 4th and Rohan Dennis won another stage for Team Sky. Sure! Nothing could be done against Tinkoff (what a team with Aru, Landa, Nibali, Oliveria, Teklehaimanot, Formolo and Majka!), and in the end Mollema's experience got him on the podium. Stil fourth is a big, even huge result for us

Looking back, we don't have that much to tell. Nobody raced between the end of the Giro due to fatigue or resisting organizers. In the end we lost the 3 jerseys we used to wear. Some of our riders came close to the victor but nobody succeeded.  Österreich Rundfahrt (2.HC) But there was no way our riders would let their heads drop after a disappointing NC weekend. We travelled to Austria with a strong team, aiming for both a good final GC spot and a stage win.  Martínez and Vandenborre, supported by Zurlo and Zardini respectively.
The first two stages immediately included two very hard summit finishes. While Vandenborre came second at the climb to Kühtai, he lost some serious time on shorter, but steeper the Kitzbüheler Horn. That way the second place in the GC was his spot for now. Surprising leader was Frederico Figueiredo from the modest LA Aluminios.
Our leadout for Martínez at stage three didn't work too well, with him finishing in seventh, right after his final leadout man Zurlo. At stage 4, the time had come to give it a try in the breakaway, as this was the stage Eder Chávarri managed to win last year. And we did it again! Hector Saez tamed the Großglockner on his own. With his once breakaway buddies long gone, he held the gap at around 2 minutes for a long time. And the final short climb didn't exhaust him enough to allow the favourites to come back. Vandenborre finished just before Frederico Figuereido and kept the gap at 1'13".
The next flatter stages and the summit finish in Sonntagberg ( a stage which kept simulating) didn't change anything and everything would come down to the time trial. Vandenborre, riding his last race before a short rest, did good and lost 46" to LottoNL's stage winner Roosen, finishing in fourth place. Figueiredo lost 2'10" to Roosen, which allowed Vandenborre to take the leader jersey by 11"!
We left the last stage to the breakaway to secure Sam's point jersey as well.
