AbhishekLFC
The climber-friendly Vuelta profile suits Nairo well and this will be his best chance at the treble. Looking good so far Smile

Part 2: Inching Ahead

Stage 8 - Hilly with hill top finish, including 1 major intermediate climb
A 2 man break again had a yo-yo-ing lead over the peloton which stretched to as high as 9 minutes at one stage. Without incident for much of the stage, the racing started on the internediate climb. Nairo rode away from the pack at the wheel of his younger brother who was doing the heavy lifting. Seven of the GC contenders teamed up to try to chase them down on the climb to the finish. They caught Nairo with 2 km to go. Nairo attacked immediately, and was only followed by Zakarin. Nairo went solo from 1.5 km, almost catching up to the break on the line. Thomas Degand won from the break. Zakarin was caught by Uran and Geniez before the finish.

Stage winner - Thomas Degand from breakaway
Movistar - Nairo Quintana 3rd, 56" behind, Dayer Quintana 10th, 2'35" behind
Other important results - Ilnur Zakarin 4th, Rigoberto Uran 5th, Alexandre Geniez 6th, 1'27" behind, Adam Yates 8th, 1'44" behind

Stage 11 - Individual Time Trial - Hilly - 40.1 km
The only ITT of this race was a hilly affair which would favour the climbers. Movistar riders did very well, with 5 finishing in the top 10 on the stage. Roman Kreuziger was fastest on the day. This could very well be his last ever stage win in a GT. Zakarin was the best of the GC contenders in 2nd. Nairo did not lose too much time.

Stage winner - Roman Kreuziger
Movistar - Ion Izagirre 3rd, losing 6", Benat Intxausti 4th, losing 11", Jasha Sutterlin 6th, losing 18", Nairo Quintana 7th, losing 30"
Other important results - Ilnur Zakarin 2nd, losing 2", Rigoberto Uran 9th, losing 50", Alexandre Geniez lost 1'3", Adam Yates lost 2'40"

Stage 14 - Mountain with mountain top finish, including 2 major and 2 minor intermediate climbs
The early break had 9 riders including Bob Jungels and Tejay van Garderen, both well down in the standings. They were joined by 3 others, leading to a 12 man break. Another rider attacked but never made it to the break. Movistar had no option but to keep the pace high. They caught 2 of the break with 50 km to go. Adam Yates, Slagter and Dan martin attacked on the fourth climb with 30 km to go. Movistar chased, picking off breakaway riders one by one. With 6 km to go, 2 remaining breakaway riders, van Garderen and Reichenbach were out in front, followed by the quartet of Yates, Uran, Nairo and Geniez. Uran and Yates were dropped, followed by the break. Nairo was too powerful for Geniez and rode to an easy victory up the steep slope, with the snow falling.

Stage 15 - Mountain with mountain top finish, including 1 major and 1 minor intermediate climbs
Ion Izagirre joined the 9 man break. van Garderen was in it again. They built up a lead of 12 minutes. Another rider attacked with 60 km to go. A total of 14 riders, including Nairo's GC rivals, attacked on the second intermediate climb. Movistar were in a spot of bother and scrambled into the chase. They managed to catch the attackers with 20 km still to go. The reduced bunch stayed together, catching the break with 8 km to go, Ion being the last of the break to be caught. At this time there were 40 riders in the lead group. The remaining Movistar and Aeroflot riders upped the ante and other riders started dropping off the back. Nairo once again rode to a solo victory without much effort as no one was strong enough to stay in touch. Back to back wins for the Colombian.

Stage winner - Nairo Quintana
Movistar - Benat Intxausti 4th, 1'59" behind, Roman Kreuziger 10th, 2'33" behind. Bac-to-back 4th place finishes had put Intxausti up into 4th place itself in the GC
Other important results - Alexandre Geniez 2nd, 45", Adam Yates, 3rd, 1'30" behind, Rigoberto Uran 5th, 2'10" behind

With 6 stage to go, it is looking very good for Nairo. Can he hold on to create history? Find out in the next post. To be continued...

Nairo's GC rivals attacked with 18 km to go. The three remaining teammates of Nairo chased hard. Nairo then went solo and caught Uran and Zakarin with 7 km left. Jungels, Gallopin and van Avermaet were in the break of 11 riders, who pulled out 11 minutes over the pack. Movistar chased again to keep the lead from increasing further. There was a pack split on the third climb. The breakaway itself was split into four groups soon after. Geniez attacked with 5 km to go, but was caught with 3 km to go. All but two of the breakaway riders were caught in the final kilometres. Gallopin, one of the two surviving members of the break, claimed victory on this stage. Nairo achieved the treble jersey win too...
i.imgur.com/c3D7s4C.jpg

He's done it! Nairo Quintana is the treble GT winner. He's achieved something no one has ever done in the history of cycling. He has won the Giro d'Italia, the Tour de France and the Vuelta a Espana, all in the same year. A remarkable achievement in terms of both skill and toughness. Winning three jerseys in this GT was just the big red cherry on top of the cake. A perfect season for the Mountain Man. This is just reward for his perseverance, especially after four consecutive second place finishes in GTs over the past two years.

DiCyc

VATTENFALL CYCLASSICS

Held during the first week of the Vuelta a Espana, Germany welcomed the riders for another edition of this race. The early break had 3 riders who built up a lead of 7 minutes. The race was without incident for the most part. One of the breakaway was caught with 20 km left. Ian Stannard was the first to attack from the chasing pack with 15 km to go. Another breakaway rider was soon caught by the pack. The pack chased hard to catch the two remaining riders out in front. Tiejs Benoot tried his luck at an attack with 7 km left. Alaphilippe was the next aggressor. The Movistar pair caught up to Stannard. All three of them were caught by the charging pack. However, they'd left their charge too late as Cristopher Juul-Jensen hung on from the breakaway to claim an unlikely win . Peter Sagan won the sprint for 2nd while Movistar's Elia Viviani finished 3rd.

GP OUEST FRANCE - PLOUAY

Another race which was held during the first week of the Vuelta. A four man break set off early. They had a maximum lead of 8 minutes over the pack. This time, the peloton did a better job of chasing the break. There were surprisingly no attacks before the break was caught. They were eventually caught with 5 km to go. Pello Bilbao attacked with 4 km to go. Initially, nobody followed, and he built up half a minute on the pack. The teams of sprinters once again got their timing wrong, and Bilbao hung on for the first major victory of his life. Giazomo Nizzolo won the sprint for 2nd, beating compatriot Niccolo Bonifazio into 3rd place.

GRAND PRIX CYCLISTE de QUEBEC

A 10 man early break was not allowed to get away very far or for very long. Another 7 man break was formed. 2 riders were caught soon after. The 5 break pulled away to a 6 minute lead over the peloton. The peloton slowly narrowed the gap to the break. Another rider attacked from the pack with 25 km left. Meintjes attacked next with 15 km left. 11 more riders, including Konig and Alaphilippe, attacked with 12 km left. With 2.5 km to go, a lone remaining break was out ahead with Herklotz and Spilak. The second group on the road consisted of 15 riders. Herklotz attacked, Spilak followed for a bit but couldn't stay in touch. Silvio Herklotz won the race, not very far ahead of Simon Spilak in 2nd. Viennet, the lone surviving breakaway rider, hung on to 3rd position. Leopold Konig was Movistar's best finisher in 7th place.
