Cameron also knew the only way he was going to win the 2015 election was by promising a referendum on the EU. Self glory.

Cameron didn't win the 2015 election. Labour lost it - thanks to one of the worst campaigns ever seen at a general election!

Today does scare me a little bit, as a UK citizen soon to be living in an EU country for a year - and one who hopes to continue to do so once I finish my degree. While I don't think a vote to leave is imminent, I do think it will be a little too close for comfort. For me, I don't understand why anyone would choose to leave, because for all of the EU's imperfections, the leave campaign have no plan for us leaving - and I can't support that in good faith.

Scares me too I want to live and work in another EU country once I have finished my degree and like you potential face it being made much harder by people believing lies by the brexit camp.

Wow. This is close.

Betting markets set the line at ~47% for leave today. As a neutral observer I'm glad I was on the right side at least. For once I get to eat my popcorn and watch this fiasco Grin

Best case scenario Remain wins narrowly over leave, so my bet wins and my investments don't all get f**ked tomorrow.

Don't worrie too much, it is not going to change things nearly as much as they try to tell you. Money rules and will make sure profits is still flowing. They will make some agreement close to what we already know.

Fully-fledged disaster. Keep expecting to bloody wake up.
End of the European project, definitely. Mind you, we've done it so you don't have to!
Disclaimer- Most of my posts are me thinking aloud. And most of what I think is rubbish.

Prepare yourselves, another scottish referendum is coming.

Nothing will happen. Britain won't leave.

The EU will simply grant Britain all of the demands they made before the referendum. They will remain in the EU but on their own terms rather than the terms dictated by the EU. The EU can't afford for Britain to leave seeing as it's pretty much Britain, Germany and France propping up the whole organisation. If Britain leaves other countries will follow and the whole organisation will collapse.

This could have all been avoided if the EU simply allowed Britain to control it's own borders and have it's own immigration policy.

I was about to ask if especially you British guys think that this could be the beginning of the end of the UK. Looking at Miguel's map, both Scotland and Northern Ireland don't seem to be too happy about the results. With the prospect of a EU membership, the independence movements could become much stronger, no?

Lets face it, no need to be PC.

Poor and old decided the fate of the whole country, against young and well established.

The irony is, the old and poor will feel the consenquences the most.

Anyway, i think that this is at least a great opportunity for the reformation of EU, which seems every year less and less functional on political level. Business and economical level is fine and Europe without borders is great, but political level is something else. The national differencies are clearly visible and are only logical and that makes the joint political decisions very hard, as many states try to press their issues and their representatives are responsible to their people, not to all "europeans".

EU is in need of reform and this will be an opportunity.

Pretty much all newspapers are speaking about this leading to another referendum about scottish independence and another rise of ireland nationalistic movements. I guess that IRA will be back in action.

By well established I take it you mean rich.

Well it's usually the rich who decide their fate and that hasn't worked out too well for them in the past.

This was a protest vote. I can't see anything really changing. As I said, The EU will bend over backwards to give Britain what it wants and Britain will remain in the EU. The EU can't afford to lose Britain.

I guess the result of the referendum is binding for the GB, thus you cant stay in EU with this result...you will probably loose Scotland and N.Ireland too.

David Cameron has resigned as of October 2016.

The world of Boris Johnson and Donald Trump looks like it's getting closer. Should be an interesting few years Smile

Cameron has to be rated as one of the biggest political idiots of all time. Making a promise he regrets later just to win the elections and in the end, same promise costs him the career. Rolling Eyes

I doubt it. As far as I can tell from that map, unionist areas voted out, republican areas voted remain, so I don't think there's more demand for a referendum there at the moment, especially considering there's a slight majority of unionists. And even then I think a referendum on the future of NI can only be called from Westminster, which I just don't think will happen.

I think it needs to be passed in Parliament first.

Literally the only good things that can come from this are an independent Scotland and a United Ireland. And also perhaps a snap election which the Conservatives lose.

But on the whole, I'm ashamed to be British today.
