Mallorca Challenge (1.1)
i.imgur.com/FRqLjSi.png

First up is the Trofeo Palma, traditionally the only chance for the pure sprinters. Surprisingly none of them have put this first race on their schedule, a perfect chance thus for the sprinters of the second row.

i.imgur.com/Dz2w35c.png

While Spanish champion Ion Izagirre seems to be enjoying his first racing kilometers with us, a group attacks against its better judgment.

i.imgur.com/UsKDSse.png

The breakaway doesn't stand a chance and then Navardauskas shows once again he's got a thing for riding hard on flat roads. His attack last exactly long enough to keep a very strong Manuel Martínez behind him. Credits to Carlos Barbero as well for a great leadout.
i.imgur.com/rC22e1D.png

The route of Trofeo Alcudia makes this a far less predictable one. Some demanding climbs which may or may not be close enough to the finish to be decisive, all depends on how aggressive the pack will be.

i.imgur.com/uColQRw.png

After a fast start finally Hector Saez is allowed to attack, along with Roompot's Piotr Havik. Hector's pace on the climbs soon turns out to be too hot for Havik. Ten kilometers to go, Saez is reeled in as well.

i.imgur.com/tl94oik.png

A last minute attack from Izagirre is neutralised just in front of the line and the surprising sprint winner is Tinkoff's Daniel Teklehaimanot.

Mallorca Challenge (1.1) - part 2
i.imgur.com/kuYrFht.png

Third race of the series is Trofeo Pollença, finishing at the peninsula in the very northeast of the island. After two main climbs halfway the race will be decided at the Mirador des Colomer climb at the end.

i.imgur.com/DNcMBM9.png

In the breakaway, our team is represented by Omar Fraile. He's on the road with fellow Basques Jon Insausti and former team mate Amets Txurruka. Last one is Dimension Data's Frenchman Renaud Bailly.

i.imgur.com/rFxPp4b.png

Txurruka's dropped first but eventually no-one in out front stands a chance against the motivated pack. At the Mirador des Colomer, Izagirre still seems to be pedalling comfortably going under the red kite.

He'll have to keep an eye on the Giant duo of Zakarin - Goos though, as now they're overtaking him with less than 1 kilometer to go.

i.imgur.com/Y6dzGQZ.png

In the end Izagirre takes a slightly less comfortable win over uphill finish specialist Alexis Vuillermoz. Zakarin completes the podium as Intxausti finishes in fifth in his first race of the year.
i.imgur.com/kuYrFht.png

Trofeo Soller is the race with the toughest looking profile, with climbs to conquer right after the start. With no big guns at the start, a lot of climbers will have their mind fixed on this particular race.

i.imgur.com/0cqf8Mh.png

Ochoa starts his season with a day out front, together with Bennati and former Caja Rural rider Miguel Angel Benito.

But quickly enough, an aggresively racing bunch reels in everyone several splits occur. Only Izagirre remains in the first group, but he's still feeling sore after yesterday's race.

Luckily the pace is somewhat lowered and a lot of our riders manage to come back. None of them have returned without having to fight to be able to do so though.

i.imgur.com/ztK7fhD.png

In the long descent Juan Andres Pardo Calvo sneaks away, and despite the pressure of New Zealand's champion George Bennett, Pardo wins showing he's much more than just another Spanish breakaway specialist.

For us, Chávarri shows his good legs at the very last short climb and his gap allows him to take third, as Ion Izagirre finishes only a few places down.
i.imgur.com/ANqAwmZ.png

Last but not least is Trofeo Calvia, another unpredictable bumpy ride. Our plan is to skip this breakaway in order to try to keep our sprinters Martínez and Barbero close to the front.

But our plan fails thanks to an extremely high pace set as soon as the harder climbs arrive. Everyone of our team is dropped, except for Bilbao and Intxausti. The reduced pack slows down...

i.imgur.com/WQaXM6o.png

and suddenly Intxausti relays and accelerates, trying to lead out Bilbao and together they surprise all the other riders. A great 1-2 for Ruralvía - Seguros RGA.

The race starts with a short, flat prologue in the streets of Melbourne. A disappointing stage for us as our top finisher is Vandenborre, finishing in 26th, having ridden 6" slower than stage winner Hepburn.

Unfortunately our two sprinters are boxed in when they try to come to the front. Co-leaders Vandenborre and Ochoa race attentively and both finish within the top 10, in the same time as stage winner Grosu.

i.imgur.com/1prNhG7.png

Diego Ochoa tried to last minute attack just over the top but his attack did not last. Stage winner was Rick Zabel, who finally seems to have become a sprinter who can win. Our main sprinter Manuel Martínez grabbed a 6th place.

Finally Tinajero managed to lead out Martínez properly, but again Manuel would have to settle for second, losing the bunch sprint against Rick Zabel.

Martínez is certainly becoming a solid sprinter, maybe the best one out there in South America. Too bad he still hasn't won. Anyway we'll certainly have a hard time renewing his contract.

The GC indeed is undecided so far, go Diego and Sam!

Herald Sun Tour - conclusion
i.imgur.com/atiOuli.png

Three times the Arthur's Seat climb. A Wilunga Hill-like stage. The last difficulty of this year's Herald Sun Tour. A breakaway seemed to be ruled out even before this stage had even started.

i.imgur.com/yyI6BZC.png

Still, quite a lot of riders tried their luck. Among them were former Colombian champion Miguel Rubiano, Russia's veteran Mikhail Ignatiev and Tim Roe.

The group got scattered at the second climb of Arthur's Seat. Only a few guys out front would make it over the top without being reeled in. But the pack was way too eager to grant them anything.

i.imgur.com/f7niJM0.png

Sam Vandenborre sacrificed his own GC ambitions to drop off Ochoa near the front. And the Colombian managed to stay there, close to co-favourites Betancur, Brambilla and Ledanois.

i.imgur.com/o0v0boL.png

Being a little far back, Ochoa had to deliver a very strong sprint for the stage win, but Ledanois just had that little more in the legs that day. Another second place it was for us, which allowed Ochoa to climb to 3rd in the general classification, as Ledanois logically won the race too.

Vuelta a Murcia (1.1)
i.imgur.com/rulKG6T.png

The route looks a bit different compared to the one of last year's edition, when Intxausti destroyed his opponents as he tamed the final hill on his own.

i.imgur.com/W1rObss.png

Chávarri joined a duo to create a three-man breakaway. At the longest climb of the race, Boris Vallée couldn't keep up with Eder Chávarri and our former teammate Lluis Mas Bonet. Mas Bonet was dropped too but he came back in the descent.

i.imgur.com/x1cDHQl.png

Even before the final hill both realised there was no point in trying today. That's where the race would be decided.

Purito Rodríguez is the first to attack, as Izagirre tries to follow. But he fails to do so and over the top only Vuillermoz and Oomen have been able to join Purito.

i.imgur.com/Nn52Y6b.png

Their attack was close to being neutralised, but one of them still had one card to play...

i.imgur.com/iDHpG2p.png

... and Vuillermoz timed his attack perfectly. He rode to today's win on his own. Behind, Barbero started his sprint early and he held on for second.

Volta ao Algarve (2.1)
stage 1
i.imgur.com/irvMV1Y.png

A relatively easy stage to start with. Nothing noteworthy had happened until the preparation of sprint started.

i.imgur.com/0Zh5sTJ.png

Lotto's and Giant's trains just destroyed the pack and in the end the sprint came down to a battle between Belgium's and Germany's champion, with Kittel winning over Stuyven. Behind, Zurlo won the peleton sprint as he was allowed to sprint for himself after Barbero had lost the Italian's wheel.

stage 1

A very hard time trial to start with. Despite having stated that he didn't feel to well, Ion had the best time at the intermediate point,. He took it rather easy in the descent and held on to a great third place, after Alaphilippe and stage winner Porte.
