he's an atrocious climber though.

He has to learn to climb somehow, aight? Pfft

At least try to start tomorrow. And the day after. At that point, you can handle the rest of the stages to stage 17 and you don't get better opportunities than this.

Unless he is absolutely cooked I think he should try and get through some of the upcoming stages, I always hear riders say that pushing on in a GT is a good experience and makes them stronger. But of course if the kid is just to tired then fair enough he pulls out

There is only Torino left for a sprint. These 2 stages in the province of Cuneo are the ones for a breakaway.

That stage is good for a breakaway Riis, the sprinters team just won't be as strong and no GC team is going to chase a break back so a sprinter can win

I think the chances are higher for a sprint. I could be wrong, but the likes of Modolo and Nizzolo know this is a golden chance. Neither team has a proper GC-contender. And don't underestimate the fact that both are Italians.

If OGE thinks the same, there is no point i trying to get Ewan through though, but I definitely think this is one for the sprinters.

Why does he go home? Apparently red jersey isn't even worth to fight for when twice the leader of the competition withdraws. With such an attitude it's no wonder none of them have won the green jersey against $agan. Rolling Eyes

They all have Tour in mind and World Champs.

Carefull there! Don't talk crap about Nutella!!
It's the reason I have to go on 6 hour rides! Wink

What happened to Demare today? Did he not find a car for a boost?

Tjallingii is now 5th in the points standings solely due to his breakaways in Holland. This is crazy.

To be fair I don't think it's entirely on Greipel, stage wins at the Tour is a big deal for Lotto so it's no surprise they want to withdraw him now and considering how the team work for him and he works for them then it makes sense he will do what they ask. Also the Worlds are a realistic option so 2 GT's in the legs wouldn't be the best idea.
Oh and it's not a poor attitude that costs riders the Green at the Tour, Sagan is just to much a complete rider for that compition for others to have a chance

You could probably help that problem by not backloading the GTs: spread the sprints stages evenly across the 3 weeks and add some decent mountain stages (harder than Abetone 2015 and Roccaraso 2016) in the first week.
That would probably also make for a better race, but more importantly, give the sprinter a better reason the stay in the race. I don't blame Greipel, I think its a right decision from his and his team's perspective, but its nevertheless sad.

WC and Tour are fine but it comes off like no one cares about this red jersey. In fact now some random italian probably will win it. Maybe without a stage win, looking at you Nizzolo.
Ofc it makes sense for them to withdraw but then I look at the palmares of Greipel and Kittel and they have a shit ton of stage wins but no GT jerseys... okay, Greipel has won one in Vuelta 2009, big wow. 7 years ago. I like the Gorilla, and Kittel is impressive at times, but this attitude is Cipo-esque at his best (even Cipollini has won 2 red jerseys in his time).

As far as I know, it doesn't give WT-points either.

I think there is a lot you can do, but I don't think its right to blame the sprinters. They obviously do what's best for them and that is to skip the mountains in the 3rd week (well, Kittel even DNF earlier, that I have a problem with tbh). As I said in my previous post, stage making particular in the Giro can change the sprinter's attitude and giving WT points will also give the team an incitement to keep the sprinters in the race.

dont you think it is about perspective. Both sprinters preparing for main goal TdF. It is same ..giro red and tour green. But there is also big difference. Sprinters are ready to fight for green jersey.. they hate mounatin stages..but then they are ready to suffer. Even getting chance to win Champ Elisee stage motivating enough.
Cipo having red jerseys..of corse. he is italian..loved one. How many green jerseys he have..none. But wasnt motivated enough to get over mountains. Giro's 42 stage wins is he's legacy.

they're skipping because they learned from Cavendish's past attempts that even if you finish you still won't win it

But Cav has it from 2011..and fight for it.
2009 was just terrible ..system was fucked (why they keep changing it..to have different type winners?)..he got disqualified once and Thor did amazing job to get that jersey. he was 3-4th. sprinter in that tour..even escaped at mountain stage to collect int. sprint points.
2010 Ale jet was smarter

If all they care about is stage wins, they should do that and go for their bunch sprints.
Thus the problem is, they don't value red jersey nor green jersey. Kittel only finishes a Tour because of CHamps Elysses. The way sprinters have been sidelined by $agan in this competition in the past four years is not simply down to exceptentional consistency & versatility of $agan, it's also because none of them really knows how to fight for a jersey. How do they expect to win GT jerseys when they are unable to defend it when they wear it, both pulled out wearing the damn thing.

How often do we come about a world championship fit for real sprinters?
Not that often, so it's kinda understandable that they rather focus on the rainbow jersey than some GT points jersey.

That can be ridden for next year when the worlds are for climbers.
