It seems very open indeed, because none of the climbers seem all that strong. Zakarin and Pozzovivo seemed the strongest of the pre-reace favorites, with Jakob Fuglsang also extremely strong. Zakarin couldn't handle 3 weeks last year, and I suspect he might need another year to win a GT, Fuglsang will lose time helping Nibali, and thus won't win and Pozzovivi will lose time on the TT I think - Although not that much. Nibali, Valverde, Uran, Kruijswijk, Chaves, Majka and Landa seems pretty evenly matched at this point.

Anyway for me, Nibali is still the biggest favourite, he will be there when it matters. Zakarin too, looks great, same as Majka, i am rooting for him.
Majka is flying under the radar that's for sure, he must be feeling good as Tinkof did have Boaro omn the front on that final climb for a little bit and he did charge up the last kilometre looking strong, he can hold his own in the TT and you'd think the MTT would be good for him. Uran is also looking good and seems to have a team dedicated to him with Simon Clarke a good road captain and a couple of climbers to help him out
Yep, Urán will be very dangerous, as i rate him as biggest favourite for that hilly TT, he can be right behind Dumoulin after that stage and always is a podium threat at Giro, but i dont think he can ever win it, there are always one or two better guys.
I think if Uran is ever going to win a Giro it's this one, the route suits and the fovourites aren't outright favourites
I don't quite agree. He is in the Majka, Fuglsang etc. ballpark right now. His ITT seemed to have gone by the wind and that will be super important, he doesn't really have the ability to drop anyone in the mountains, he never has.
Also, can we all take a moment to appreciate Jungels again? If he gets a top-10 and wins the white jersey, i'll become a millionaire. Please Jungels. |

Kung is the only in the break who can make it today.
But probably Trek, Lampre, Lotto, Etixx and FDJ all want a sprint badly. Kittel will drop off on the climb |

Why do you say that? Seems like a good fit to me and clearly he's getting freedom to ride for himself

what freedom..to be alone at mountain. Other days working for sprint train. For stage wins fine..for GC place or white jersey. Super hard to be there alone |

Etixx is quite good at developping talents. Seems like a good fit to me.
No GC contender means more freedom for Jungels and not only at 3rd rate races.
Edit: at teams with more climbers he wouldn't get support either. He would have to support others.
FDJ working on the front. Guess they are looking for another 2nd place for Demare. |

I wouldn't say that. He surprised me last year at the Tour with his climbing. His TT is great as well. Maybe he can develop into a GC contender.

Maybe in 1 week stage races but I can't see him finishing any higher than the lower section of the top 10 over 3 weeks

Indeed he is young and promising one,
That's why I was wondering why he leaved home country team,,who seems to be more and more focusing to be as GT team...to Ettix spring classics all star team/ Kittel sprint train team |

He might win some week-long races, but he is still more of a puncher than a climber. His TT doesn't make up for that. He would have to completely change his physique to become that kind of rider and I don't see it happening |

And to do that then his TT would suffer big time so yeah I agree he looks like a 1 week stage racer and there is nothing wrong with that
