I have to agree with you; Abdu"push'em"ov, was a good sprinter despite the outrage and crashes that he caused (think Paris in 1991).

He was a good sprinter on his day but unfortunately he will always be remembered for that crash on the Champs Elysees Frown

How are we supposed to calculate these things. What counts and what doesn't? fx. Cipollini rarely finished a grand tour, but at the same time he was an absolute beast in WT stage races Catalunya, Romandie were as Cavendish hasn't won to many of those. And are we supposed to judge by their palmares, or on their actual sprinting?

If we go by the palmares I personally think Cipollinis palmares is more impressive than Cavendish's, but Cavendish still has a few more years to improve his, so i might change my mind on that, when he retires.

For those who wish to make a comparison themself Smile

Merckx has over 500 wins, so that makes him the best sprinter right? Petacchi has 183 wins, so he's better than Cav or Cipo?

People keep saying that, but for some reason, you can only find around 130-140 wins. Maybe that is because track racing, criteriums and such isn't credited as pro wins.

Depends what you class. My point was that using number of wins to determine the best sprinter doesn't exactly work. Sean Kelly had 188 wins, does that make him the better sprinter over Pettachi, Cavs and Mario and others?

Eddy Merckx,I've seen compete, has participated in races in 1800, has won 525 (including 333-hors criterium), 98 track and 2 of cyclo-cross races. You have his best sprinters times that sometimes the beat is called: Freddy Maertens, Roger de Vlaeminck and Patrick Sercù.
But in my opinion Cavendish, Petacchi and Cipollini and Zabel also were faster than him.
And let's not forget Van Looy with 379 wins.

Wasn't attackign your points, was simply questioning the 500 wins from Eddy, in pro races Smile

It is 525. Was at the museum Marckx/Ickx last year and there they were, all listed.
I think Amateur victories included (which I think is now U23 or pro without contract). And 6days also included.
But even besides that it's more than 133 pro victories. PCS is not complete concerning older records.
Trofeo Barracchi is just one of the races not on the site. Other victories aren't documented as well, or not yet.

If we are counting everything, there can be riders with almost as many victories, like Valverde, who was slaughtering the youth categories, same with Sagan in MTB at Slovakia...

I think only pro wins should be counted...
I'll be back

Not that GOAT Sprinter should be decided by # of wins Wink (or any GOAT for that matter!)

You should look at what races people won, in what circustances. How long a period did they win for. What was the sport like at the time. Technology. Doping. There's a whole range of things to consider and try to compare!

It's why i kind of discount any modern sprinters because changes to strategy and technology have give them huge boosts. As well as the growth of specilization. It's why i favor someone like Darrigarde over Cavendish. Cipo or Pettachi can stake strong claims though.

Wel I'm not sure if those wins are included or not. Only know for sure kermiskoersen aren't included.
But either way, let me assure you he has at least over 300 pro victories. 133 on PCS is bullocks. Incomplete files.

I mean, a lot of those 300+ weren't sprints so don't count regardless Pfft

Of course, I wasn't talking about the sprinting, just about his actual number Wink
Merckx wouldn't be in top 10 of best sprinters. But he has most victories.

And I agree that modern day cyclist have the advantage in some areas.
Almost impossible to compare a rider from the 50s to a sprinter now.

If only wins would count then follow this logic: Cavendish is a better stage racer than Andy Schleck ever was. He won more stage races.

udoi
I follow the races since I was ten years old and I've never seen one so explosive as Cavendish.
