2020 is shaping up to be an exciting season for Movistar. One cannot start the preview without mentioning Nairo's aim of winning all three Grand Tours in a year. His training regime has been lowered to as much as absolutely necessary to keep him fit and in race rhythm throughout the season. He will be riding in one preparation race before each of the GTs. The signing of Alaphilippe was done with the sole purpose of beefing up our hilly classic races. Although the team have done pretty well in those races, they haven't been able to get on top of the podium very often. Majka and Arredondo have been brought in, to be by Nairo's side as he goes for his historic record.
Despite this looking like being the last year with Movistar, they've still not gone slow on the objectives. Almost every objective has gotten tougher since last season. There is a visible determination on behalf of both the team and the sponsors to dissolve the partnership on the highest note possible.
The team continues to build towards the impending change of sponsor as mentioned earlier. We are not expecting whole-sale changes to the squad this season, with a maximum of three changes. We continue to look for ways to bring the international flavour to our team, as the next sponsor will most likely be one with international appeal. This is our last opportunity to build before the transition.
It's now team to start season 2020...

RIDER SPOTLIGHT
Before starting the new season, I'd like to throw the spotlight on three young riders in our team. A couple of them will be starting their second season with us, hoping to keep up their good performances. The third can be called a veteran of the peloton at the tender age of 25, now starting his fourth season as a professional. Here they are:
Bryan Coquard
After a brilliant first season, featuring 10 wins including one at the Tour de France, and the overall victory at the Tour Down Under, Coquard is in line to kick on and become a world leading sprinter. His strongest suit is his powerful acceleration, with a similar sprint stat allowing him to stay in front once he gets there.
Tiejs Benoot
Tipped to be a star of the Northern Classics circuit from a very young age, Benoot has been on a steadily increasing curve as far as his results go. With a 6th place finish to his name at the Paris-Roubaix last season, he's in prime position to become a genuine contender for a cobbled Monument victory.
Isidro Pintassilgo
Having been in the team for three whole years now, Pintassilgo has become one of the guys. No longer categorised as a promising upstart, he has shown consistency in his role as a domestique in the team. With a high climbing stat, and decent TT and hill stats, he has the potential to do well in the lower category stage races. The step up from the U23s to the big league has been a successful one for him.

Team Management Pre-Season Statement on Team Sponsor
As has been announced earlier, the team do not intend to extend their association with Movistar beyond the current season. It is a decision taken without any haste, and has been agreed upon by all parties involved. The management is looking mostly at West and South European sponsors with an international presence to take the team forward in the coming season(s). Most riders in the team are native to those regions. It has been our endeavour over the past couple of seasons to transition the team to suit the new sponsor, both in terms of rider quality, as well as international appeal.
Last but not least, the contribution of Movistar over the past 8 years and counting cannot be emphasized enough. They have been ever supportive and have never come in the way of the team's progress. We wish them the best and hope to part ways in best terms.

RACE PREVIEW - TOUR de SAN LUIS
Stage List
ITT - 1
Flat - 3
Hilly - 2 (2 HT)
Mountain - 1
Stage 1
A flat stage 1 starts off with a gentle incline and then it's a gradual downhill from there. A perfect sprinter's stage to start off.
Stage 2
Another flat stage with a very gentle uphill finish should see the sprinters take victory once again.
Stage 3
The really big climb comes too far before the finish line to affect the outcome. The much smaller climb to the finish is where the stage will be decided.
Stage 4
The all important ITT slopes first gently downward and then gently upward. Even with two moderate climbing stages coming up, this stage might go a long way in deciding the GC.
Stage 5
The mountain classified stage comes right after the ITT, so there is no respite for the leaders in the defence of their positions. The very steep climb should ensure a reduced pack of strong climbers sprints for the stage win at the finish.
Stage 6
Another uphill finish awaits the riders on this penultimate stage. Given the flat nature of the last stage, this will be the last chance for the GC contenders to make their mark. Should make this an interesting stage.
Stage 7
A rolling flat stage ends the race in Argentina. The chances of a breakaway are high on this stage. The sprinters will also want to end the race on a good note.
Overall Assessment
With four stages capable of playing a part in deciding the GC, the season opening race promises to be a good one. A relatively strong field registered to start further adds to the intrigue of this race.

The first race of the season brings with it the usual uncertainty about rider form and progress over the winter. Movistar go into this race with a lightweight squad, as their big names are yet to reach race fitness following the break. Dayer Quintana would be the GC contender for the team, with Gorkha Izagirre in support. Moreno Capitan would be making his debut here. The start list was surprisingly strong for an early season race. Chris Froome was starting his season here, with teammate Simon Yates in tow. Others included Jakob Fuglsang, Louis Meintjes, Diego Ulissi, Steven Kruijswijk and Alexis Vuillermoz. All the GC contenders would want to get a win under their belt at this early stage. With the stage profiles a mixed bag, this could well turn out to be an interesting race.
Stage 1 - Flat
The race started off with a 2 man breakaway forming early on. They were not allowed more than 5 minutes' lead but they held on till the 5 km marker. The stage was decided in a bunch sprint with Rudiger Selig winning. Lobato finished 8th.

Stage 2 - Flat with 1 minor intermediate climb
Another 2 man breakaway formed, and was allowed to build only a 3 minute lead at the most. This time they were caught well before the line as the teams of sprinters set up for the finish. Rudiger Selig was the fastest again, completing his second stage win in a row.

Stage 3 - Mountain with mountain top finish, 1 major and 1 minor intermediate climbs
Another 2 man break went away. After a while 1 rider fell back to the peloton while another joined him the break. Simone Ponzi attacked 30 km from the finish. He and the break were caught some time later. Simon Yates and Jakob Fuglsang attacked 5 km from the finish. There was a counter of sorts from a group of 7 riders. Yates and Fuglsang were able to build up a minute's lead over them, fighting it out for the stage win. Fuglsang won the stage.

Movistar - Dayer Quintana 6th, 1'6" behind, Gorkha Izagirre 9th, 1'39" behind

Stage 4 - Individual Time Trial - Flat - 19.6 km
Up and coming Lennard Kamna won the ITT, in his favoured element, with Chris Froome completing a Sky 1-2. Simon Yates took the lead in the GC with his effort. Movistar riders Gorkha Izagirre and Dayer Quintana finished just under and just over 2 minutes behind the stage winner.

Other important results - Chris Froome 2nd, losing 31", Simon Yates 7th, losing 44", Steven Kruijswijk 9th, losing 54", Jakob Fuglsang lost 56"
Stage 5 - Mountain with 1 major intermediate climb
A 4 man breakaway formed to break the chain of 2 man breaks in earlier stages. They built up a substantial lead of 10 minutes at one point. At the top of the only clmb of the day, 11 men formed the lead group. The breakaway had been left behind by now. Ben King and Simon Yates attacked with 12 km left, building up a 30 second lead. Dayer Quintana and Diego Ulissi attacked with 5 km left. Surprisingly there was no reaction from the pack. A while later, only Raston Safford made the gap to the second pair. Ben King won, while Yates increased his lead at the top of the GC. Dayer managed a top 5 finish, to himself up to 5th in the GC.

Other important results - Simon Yates 2nd, Diego Ulissi 3rd, Raston Safford 4th, same time. The group containing Meintjes, Kruijswijk, Fuglsang and Froome finished 52" behind
Stage 6 - Hilly with hilltop finish, including 1 major intermediate climb
A 6 man breakaway built up a 9 minute lead at the most, and were never caught on this stage. Ever Rivera won from the break. In the pack, Chris Froome, Diego Ulissi and Dayer Quintana launched the first attacks going up the climb to the finish. Fuglsang, Kruijswijk, Vuillermoz and Safford follwed them. Dayer and Fuglsang could not keep up, losing a few seconds to the others. Simon Yates played catch-up, limiting his losses and managing to hold on to his lead in the GC.

Stage 7 - Flat with 1 minor intermediate climb
Gorkha Izagirre put himself into the break. He was exactly 7 minutes off the pace at the start of the day. What started off as just another harmless breakaway soon turned into a chance for Gorkha to steal the GC title, as the peloton failed to get organized. With 35 km left, the gap was 11 minutes, and increasing! There was a response soon after this but Gorkha too responded with a couple of attacks of his own. He didn't manage to drop the others, but the breakaway still had more than 9 minutes lead going into the last 5 km. With a massive chase on in the peloton, Robin Carpenter won the stage. Gorkha crossed the line in 6th place. It was now a nervous wait for the pack to come in. How far behind were they? They crossed the line, and the screen showed that they were 7'31" behind the breakaway!

Till stage 6, this race looked to be a disappointing one for us. Dayer had dropped out of the top 5 on stage 6 itself and there was no participation among the podium places in the other classifications. Stage 7 changed everything around! In a bizarre turn of events, Team Sky left the chase too late and Gorkha snatched a win from under Yates' nose. An average race turned into a great one for us. Moreno Capitan too did well in his first race, finishing 5th in the U25s.

RACE PREVIEW - TOUR DOWN UNDER
Stage List
Flat - 4
Hilly - 2 (1 HT)
Stage 1
Stage 1 is mostly flat with a moderately steep climb before the finish. The finish itself is also slightly uphill, which could make it interesting.
Stage 2
A few climbs are present at the start of this stage. The latter half of the stage is milder but the finish is uphill again, more so than the last stage.
Stage 3
A mostly flat stage with the climb coming a handful of kilometres before the finish. The climb before the finish will spoil this stage for the sprinters. Should favour the punchers.
Stage 4
Another flat, but yet again there's a small dink before the finish This time though the sprinters should take the win.
Stage 5
The famous stage ending on Old Willunga Hill should see a showdown between the GC contenders. Not particularly steep, but the heritage value usually sees a lot of riders psyched up to try to win this stage.
Stage 6
A short, flat stage ends proceedings here in Australia. The sprinters will be out in force to try and claim a stage victory here.
Overall Assessment
The Tour Down Under can be hard to predict, given its stage profiles. It usually swings between being dominated by punchers and the odd victories by sprinters, like last year. It should be interesting once again to see who comes out on top.
