1/7-8/7 Internationale Österreich Rundfahrt (cat. 2.HC)

4/7 Stage 4/8 Matrei in Osttirol – St. Johann 150.3 km

Christina reports: The Stage starts in Matrei where it ended yesterday. The route passes over the very hard Großglockner climb about mid stage, from there a long downhill towards a slightly uphill finish in St. Johann.
Weissenstein castel in Matrei was first mentioned in 1160 at the time owned by the Counts of Lech Gemünd, in 1207 sold to the Archbishop of Salzburg, The castel has been renovated and reformed to its current state in the 19 century.

Pre-race strategy: If possible Schumacher will go for more KoM points, otherwise we will stay together protecting Malacarne. Last year the stage was won by Julio Camacho from the morning break

After a lot of morning attacks all failed, a group of 6 gets away, Alessandro Bisolti (Bardiani) wins the cat2 KoM.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/1_zpsxvcethzv.jpg

On the way op to Großglockner, the front group gets company by Stefano Locatelli (Nippo - De Rosa), Cayetano Sarmiento (Avianca), and others including Stefan Schumacher, the front is now 12 riders. Locatelli wins both KoM sprint at Großglockner.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/2_zpsdpdzcr4r.jpg

After the top Schumacher lets go of the front, he has used everything he had, the favorite group starts a very fast hunt, trying to reel the breakaway back in. near the 20 km mark, it seems to be over for the breakaway.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/3_zpsacxet7rg.jpg

It is over for the breakaway, only the strongest riders have anything left to offer at this point, it ends with a sprint between race leader Damiano Caruso, Davide Malacarne, Janier Acevedo, Mattia Cattaneo and Alfredo Balloni. Davide Malacarne is the strongest today he wins the stage over Mattia Cattaneo.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/4_zpstxssetqk.jpg

I missed the export, this is top 10 GC.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/result_zpsrjwczn0o.jpg

Christina: Fantastic stage win by Malacarne, with good protection from Lasse all day, he had more to offer in the end.

5/7 stage 5/8 St. Johann – Sonntagberg 209.2 km

Christina: The stage starts in St. Johann, where it ended yesterday, last year Stefan Denifl (IAM Cycling) won the stage taking 25 sec. on the favorites at the final climb.
A church in St. Johann was already mentioned in 1150, but the present Roman Catholic Deanery Church of St. Johann, the largest and one of the most beautiful churches in Tyrol, was constructed between 1723 and 1732.

Interior of the dean church:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/st-johann-altaere-kanzel-maria-41375_zpsksp5inxm.jpg

Pre-race strategy: The team is very tired by now, we hope to have a rest day, letting others do the work, it is the last stage with an uphill finish, we hope Malacarne won’t lose time today, and maybe even get some seconds.

Profile:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/0_zpsppmklgkv.jpg

A strong morning breakaway of 6 riders, most of them with good hill ability, but it is no threat to the GC the best placed rider is almost 12 minutes behind.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/1_zpsd8wn4xbh.jpg

It is Vini Fantini doing most of the work in the peloton, only Avianca help a little from time to time.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/2_zpslvrtanuf.jpg

15 km to the line, a group of favorites attack, including race leader Damiano Caruso, but Stefan Schumacher reacts promptly and bring the attackers back.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/3_zpswu75gpen.jpg

Up front in the breakaway, attacking starts at the last climb. Now only Juan Esteban Arango, Louis Meintjes and Thomas Rohregger is left in front.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/4_zpszxv3gxjx.jpg

The stage is won by Louis Meintjes (MTN – Qhubeka) over Thomas Rohregger (RadioShack). Davide Malacarne gets over the line together with race leader Damiano Caruso, 50 sec after the winner.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/5_zpscb3p1adw.jpg

Christina: Fine result, the GC top is unchanged, but Malacarne took a little extra time on most on the top 10 riders.

Yes, very interesting how he will preform in the ITT comming up soon.

This will go down to the wire it seems...

Tamijo
AbhishekLFC: A miracle is possible, but 39 sec is a lot, Malacarne is far from an ITT expert

6/7 stage 6/8 Maria Taferl – Poysdorf : 192.3 km

Christina reports: The caravan has moved some 62 km east from Sonntagberg to Maria Taferl.
The route passes close to Schloss Asparn, near the last intermediate sprint, built in the second half of the 13 century, on the remains of an existing castle, already mentioned in 1121. Restoration in 1651 gave the castle its present appearance.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/Asparn_Schloss_zpsxskhb0vq.jpg

Pre-race strategy: We expect a mass sprit finish, but we won’t do anything special bring a break back, the team is very used, we hope for an easy day. Last year race leader Eduard Vorganov (Katusha) had a surprise win at this stage from a mass sprint finish.

Profile:
i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/0_zpszickg2jw.jpg

A morning break of 5 gets a little more than 5 minutes.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/1_zpsjkhwieej.jpg

But the peloton led by Vini Fantini sets the pace very high in the last half of the race.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/2_zpsd6mahw2r.jpg

The breakaway is over at the 5 km mark, and it ends in a sprint amongst those few having anything left to sprint with. The stage is won by Ramunas Navardauskas (RusVelo) with an very small margin to René Mandri (Vorarlberg), Davide Malacarne gets a very fine 4th, cementing his point jersey.

7/7 stage 7/8 Podersdorf am See ITT : 24.3 km

Christina reports: The caravan have moved some 120 km south from Poysdorf for an ITT in Podersdorf am See, The community is located in the national park Neusiedlersee-Seewinkel, a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape. Lake Neusiedl (Hungary. Fertő) is one of the few steppe lakes in Europe, covering both Austrian and Hungarian territory, Lake Neusiedl is the largest Austrian lake.

Neusiedlersee:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/Podersdorf_lake_zpsmkseuzob.jpg

Last year the stage was won by Fredrik Kessiakoff (Katusha) in 32'42.

Profile:
i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/0_zpskzby53qa.jpg

The stage was won by Jan Barta (IAM) in 32'43, almost the same winning time as last year.

Results of previous GC top 10:
10 Matthew Busche-RadioShack, +1’30 (21), enough to get a new GC:9
9 Amets Txurruka-Caja Rural, +2’05 (62) dropping to GC:11
8 Kevin De Weert-Omega Pharma, +1’11 (11), enough to get new GC:7
7 André Cardoso-Caja Rural, +1’37 (28), dropping to GC:8
6 Mattia Cattaneo-Bardiani, +1’17 (13), a good result, but staying at GC:6
5 Janier Acevedo-Jamis, +1’44 (32), enough to move up to GC:4
4 Robert Vrecer-Tirol, +2’07 (64) losing a placement down to GC:5
3 Alfredo Balloni-Androni, +0’57 (7) the best result in top 10, but not enough to catch Malacarne
2 Davide Malacarne-Christina, +1’38 (29) enough to stay at GC:2
1 Damiano Caruso-Vini Fantini +2’02 (57) very close to losing his pole position.

Malacarne coming over the line:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/1_zpszyyjyhug.jpg

Christina: The time differences got smaller in top 10, but didn’t change things that much. Davide Malacarne had a fine ride, getting very close to Caruso. A time 21 sec. better than Ellisonde last year, I am sure he will mention that when they meet.
