31/7-5/8 Post Danmark Rundt (cat. 2.HC)
1/8 Stage 2/6 Grindsted - Aarhus : 188.5 km
Rasmussen: The caravan have moved about 50 km north west to Grindsted, a town of about 9500 people, from burial tombs in the area, we know that people have lived here in the Stone Age at least from 2400 BC.
The pharmacy in Grindsted:
A first modest church was built here as early as the 12th century; the name Grindsted was mentioned for the first time in the 14 century. For many centuries Grindsted was just a tiny village, but in the early 1900’s it grew rapidly and a new larger Church was build 1921-23.
Pre-race strategy, we want to get riders in a break getting points for the KoM. We hope for Hester or Høberg if it comes to a mass sprint.
NB: Our cameraman fell asleep on the motorbike, so just one picture.
The fighting is very hard in the morning; first a break with Jens Voigt (RadioShack), Nicki Sørensen (Saxo – Tinkoff) and 3 others, but the peloton fights very hard, and the break is caught
Then it is Lasse Bøchman and again Jens Voigt they get a gap, other riders attacks and gets up, in the end the peloton speed up again and everything is neutralized.
The break-away with Lasse Bøchman:
Getting closer to the first mountain sprint, Frederik Wilmann see the opportunity to get away, and starts a solo break. This time the peloton does not react and he get away, taking both mountain sprints.
But the peloton is fast, and he never get more than 2-3 minutes, it comes to a mass sprint, we set Morten Høberg on the wheel of Martin Pedersen, but the other sprinters in much faster.
The stage is won by Ben Swift (Vodafone) over Sven Vandousselaere (Topsport Vlaanderen), our best was Morten Høberg (16).
Rasmussen: Lasse Bøchman did not come in with the peloton today; he must have had a technical failure or a crash, he is now more than 7 min behind. Anyway good racing from Wilmann today.

2/8 Stage 3/6 Aarhus - Vejle: 180.6 km
The stage starts in Aarhus, denmarks 2nd largest city, with a city population of around 260.000,- and a total urban population of about 850.000.
There is several known settlement in the area dating back to early Stone Age, 5000-4000 bc. Amongst the findings are 2 fine boats, 6-7 m long, both dated to be about 7000 years old.
Remains of portal tomb near Aarhus about 3500 BC:
Archaeological record shows that the area was also relatively densely populated throughout the Bronze and Iron Age, but the town in itself seems to have been founded by the Viking about 700 AD. Around 900 AD the city was large by the standards of the time, with fortification and moat.

The first few attacks fail, but in the end we get Bøchman in a break with Pieter Jacobs (Topsport Vlaanderen).
Bøchman takes the two first KoM sprints.
Just before the last KoM sprint Jacobs attacks, Bøchman can’t follow.
But the peloton is too fast for Jacobs, he is caught with about 5 km left.
It is now up to the sprinters, and the stage is won by Taylor Phinney (BMC) over Ben Swift (Vodafone), our best is Martin Pedersen (11).
Rasmussen: We keep the KoM jersey, which is what we wanted.

Sutty: Climbing in Denmark,  actually it is pretty silly.
Abhishek: there is a ITT coming up, the one tempo rider I have got, lost min. So GC is over for us.
We started bad, lost time with no good reason, now it is just a fitness ride, or a break might be lucky.

The caravan has traveled 160 km east to Sorø, a town with a population of about 7.700. As with Aarhus, tomb and other archaeological record, proves that the area have been constantly inhabited back to the Stone Age 5000-6000 years ago.

The current town was started when one of Denmark’s leading men, founded a monastery in 1142, the monastery quickly grew into the largest and richest in the Nordic countries.

Rain is pouring down in the morning, horrible weather for a cycling race. A break of 6 riders, the strongest seems to be Arman Kamyshev (Astana Pro Team), the best placed rider in the GC, is our Martin Pedersen, 1’02 behind the leader.
The group works together very well and for a long time it seems like they have got a good chance to share victory, but just 1 km before the finish, the sprint trains from the peloton passes by.
The stage is won by Matteo Trentin (Omega), in a narrow sprint over Barry Markus (Vacansoleil) our best was Martin Pedersen (19).

The caravan has traveled another 40 km west from Frederiksværk to Helsingør for the ITT, Helsingør is a city of 46.492 people. The earliest prove of humans in the area are 9.000 years old tools from the early Stone Age hunters, ornamented bones and flint.

Helsingør is famous for its castle Kronborg, which is seen as the site of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The first known fortification dates back to the 1200’s, between 1574 and 1585 the present Kronborg was built, replacing the Middle Age fortification, with a renaissance castle.

The first rider to set a time that could be a winner is Alex Dowsett (Movistar Team) 7 seconds faster than Julien Vermote (Omega Pharma)
But it is not enough; he is beaten with another 5 sec. by Nelson Oliveira (RadioShack)
Taylor Phinney (BMC) is insanely fast, beating Oliveira with 21 sec., winning the stage and the GC. Ben Swift falls back from race leader to 5th. Our best today was Lasse Bøchman (45) losing 1’32.

The caravan has moved 25 km south vest to Hillerød, a city with a population af 31.500 and a total municipality population of about 50.000. Archaeology shows that there have live people in the area since the last Ice Age more than 10.000 years ago,

The first historical evidence dates back to 1275, with the mention of a village and the estate Hillerødsholm. The town was founded by the kings in connection with the building of the royal castle “Frederiksborg Slot” between 1560-1625. After a fire in 1859, large parts of the castle was rebuilt in 1860-84.
Pre-race strategy: Again today we will try to get someone in a break-away.
Profile:
We get Lasse Bøchman in a strong morning break of 7 riders.
But the sprint teams in the peloton is looking for a victory today, with a very hard pace they get the break reeled back in, in good time for the sprint trains to form.
We get Marc Hester on the wheel of Martin Pedersen, well placed for the finish.
The stage is won by Ben Swift (Vodafone) over his teammate Christopher Sutton; we get Marc Hester in at 4th.
Rasmussen: A good finish for us, in an overall bad race.
