I thought WT riders weren't allowed to take part in Avenir, so why is Henao racing it?

Jonas Koch won the first road stage after a 130km (!) solo (!!!) with less than 30 seconds over the peloton, where Mads Würtz Schmidt attacked in the last k to take second ahead of Simone Consonni.

After the breakaway victory for Pedersen yesterday, today the Danish win another stage. Their third in four stages so far. Søren Kragh Andersen wins his second stage after beating Van der Poel in a sprint. Van der Poel showed some good recovery as he crashed heavily yesterday. Tom Bohli of Switzerland won the yellow jersey yesterday and keeps it today.

Ah, so that's what happened.. Has VDP said anything about his motivations here? He has some really fast sprint but I always thought he'd eventually become a puncheur/climber and thus be a good bet for overall victory under normal circumstances. He has the build for it but I imagine he uses this race more for preparation? How good is possibly his shape, in regard to building up form for U23 World Championships and the soon World Cup in Vegas event (time to open up the CX thread soon Wilier  ?

Either the peloton doesn't catch a single guy at all, or they catch the break with 35km to go like today and let the race become wide open again...
A nearly bigger surprise is Gaviria's story of today, he went on a solo break for most of the day (two riders caught up later, but not long before they all were reeled in), and yet he wins the bunch sprint.

Van der Poel's ambition was a stage win. Unfortunately he abandoned today. His injuries cause too much discomfort to continue. I believe he wants to shine at the u23 World Championships (and after that the cyclocross season ofcourse).
Mads Pedersen also abandoned today after a crash. |

Le Tour de Danois continues. The Mads Würtz from the early break took the victory in a stage which features some climbs.
The current leader Bohli got dropped and so the lead has moved on to José Luis RodrÃguez from Chile!
An interesting move from Julen Amezqueta. He was present in the break and moves to 4th overall. Amezqueta recently won the Volta a Portugal u23.

Martin wins the first real mountain stage in l'Avenir and moves to 2nd overall. He was the lone survivor of a breakaway. Soler also survived from the break and finds himself in 3rd overall.
Mühlberger attacked together with Petilli on the final climb. Mühlberger looked very strong on the final climb and almost closed the gap to Martin. He missed the stage win but fortunately he took the leader's jersey. A small peloton with other favourites finished more than a minute after.

Soler wasnt in the breakaway with Martin. Yes, he was in a move earlier, but that was closed down.
He attacked out of the peloton in the last 2-3 k and managed to catch and drop Petili who was dropped by Mühlberger. Btw, Mühlberger was lead the wrong way with 500 metres to go and would likely have caught Martin if not. Incredible ride by him.
Henao was even dropped from the group of favorites. Disappointing. |

another time in France they lead one of the leaders the wrong way and surprisingly the frenchman wins...was it the third tim this year now?
great ride from Soler by the way, if he really attacked that late and gained so much time...
seems like Bardiani took a decent climbing talent in Ciccione |

Another French victory in Avenir. A very impressive solo win for Gesbert. Behind him the favourites battled it out, with a strong Soler finishing on top. Mühlberger had a very tough day and finished more than 10 minutes down. Soler takes the leader's jersey in front of Belgium's De Plus.

Worth noting that Maison was the designated leader for France and crashed out yesterday while leading solo. Martin is now the team leader, but breakaway wins seem to be the goal - hence the last two stage wins. Very impressive from Gesbert having just turned 20 as well, definitely one to watch. |
