I'm playing my pro cyclist career. In my 3rd year I and Simon Yates fighting for the overall for the giro had 3mins on me but luck struck gold for me on the 20th stage on a mountain time trial and i ended beating him for the overall by 1 min. So I gained 4 mins on him during the Mountain time-trial.
4th year I tried the giro-tour double. Giro was close again but this time it was against Miguel Lopez. He had 2mins on me and on stage 16 we had a 44km time-trial which i knew i could win by a margin of 3 to 4 mins on him but there was a bug that would not let me finish the race. it crashed for me for 5 times. the only way for me to continue was sim the day so i did and gained 2mins but no more mountain stages for me to do something so giro over. I got second. The tour I was down by 1:30 on kelderman and he had better time-trial then me and mountain but 20th stage 56km time-trial and gold struck again bc he messed of been super fatigued bc I ended up putting 3mins on him and ended up winning the tour. so close to the double oh well.
5th year I decided to do the tour-vuelta. this where i am currently at and thru 11 stages Froome, Quintana and myself are tied with 0 seconds lost to each other. but on the next stage 12 it was a mountain stage and there must of been 7 mountains to climb cat 1 and 2 and maybe a 3. so riders are falling off and i need water bad. i have a regen and alaphalipe as free riders so they are not getting water for me instead all the people that get send to get water drop off and soon my bottle starts blinking before the other two and the ai forcing me to get water but i keep going solo effort. next thing i know am dropped for getting water then the pace goes up and i try catching up but its too late last half of the stage and too many mountains to climb for me to catch up so i hit the wall and decided to live another day and i ended up losing 17 mins. so my plan is to attack from for to gain all my time back. most liekly wont win but i will try.

Kelderman nearly won the Tour? Awesome!
But err yes, water can be quite frustrating, I agree.
I think this could fit in this topic though.

ok so down 20 mins and next two stages are mountain stages and a rest day after.on the first mountain stage has a cat 1 before the summit which was a hc. I broke on the bottom of the cat 1 and won the stage and gained 6 mins. so down 14. next mountain stage i could afford to go all out and not worry bc i have a rest day. there was a cat 1 then hc then hc. i broke with 90 km to go and on the cat1 one and ended up winning again but this time i game 9:50. now im in 7th place and down 4:30. my break away days are over and now to play smart. i still have a 52 km timetrial in my back pocket.

Nice Comeback! May I ask in which dificulty level do you play?

I play on hard. SO update just lost the tour by 46 seconds. I was down 455 heading into the final TT of 55km. If it wasn't for the water situation i probably would of won my second tour. Quintana won. Now off to the Vuelta. Also Kelderman has been out for a couple of months with a vertebrate break. am sure to see him at the vuelta but looks he wont have enough time to get in shape for it. So I expect to win the Vuelta comfortably

Nevertheless, what a nice Tour on hard! You may have not won it but I guess it must have been quite exciting for you! 
Anyway, this water issue also happened to me on a smaller competition. At the time I made a small attack in order to get some water by myself, and just waited for the peloton again. I was lucky they gave me a few seconds by myself... but I reckon it may not work every time.
