Freshness in career mode
Housies
Hi all,

After doing 3 seasons in be a pro, I decided to start a career with Etixx Quickstep. I am having troubles with the freshness of many of my riders. I don't understand how I can raise their freshness.
Not riding races does not help, Cavendish for example hasn't raced for over 2 weeks now in his freshness is still bad. It's march of the first season and he did only 4 races this year.

This also happens to all my cobble riders which is annoying since I should win a lot of these races but they start with the yellow bar at half due to bad freshness.

any advice?

This is based on PCM 14: In the first few races of a season freshness will usually/always be bad until the riders have some racing days in their legs. After that it's a case of objectives: If you have made a race an objective, freshness should be excellent. But if a race is not an objective and the next objective is close - even a month away, possibly more - then freshness will not be good. But after the last objective of the season freshness will always/usually be excellent. So I set the earliest objectives possible, say, T-A, San Remo and the four WT cobblestone races for my northern classics team and then freshness won't be a problem for those and all later races. Do not forget to manually adjust the training intensity after setting the objectives - basically lower it so tiredness doesn't build up.

Doing more races only influences the rythm no? You claim doing more races early in the season will help the freshness as well?

I thought the objectives influence the fitness, but they also influence the freshness then?

Difficult and very non transparent.

Yeah true story.
You need to participate in races before season target races if you want the rider to be in perfect shape.
There is a lot of continental races in february that are perfect to join before all the classics starts.

Objectives only influence the fitness because the game automatically sets the training intensity according to the objectives, but you are free to change that afterwards, in fact I recommend doing so. Maybe take a look at what I wrote in the following thread:

I also noticed that no matter what, my freshness is always bad in the first race(s) of the season - Tour down Under, for example. So I think - independent of rhythm, because later in the season the rhythm can easily be bad and freshness excellent - that riders require a few days of racing to be sure that the freshness will be excellent at their first objective, but I might be wrong about that.

Also you can check out the tips and tricks for season planning (again, only for PCM 14, but I doubt anything has changed). Dancycling has done a good job, below I posted how I do it, have been doing it for many years so it's second nature.

Ok I did not get PCM 2014 so I based my season planning on PCM 2013. With that in mind, I did not participate in too many races pre season as they will have lots of races ahead of them. Thanks for your replays and tips.

Appreciated!

ok so rhythm is to do with races?

what affects freshness? I assumed it was to do with how little you had trained/raced recently? i.e alot of hard training and too much racing (i.e long tour) would make you less fresh?

Yeah, you build up rhythm through racing - it's easier to maintain/regain later in the season than building it up for the first time each season.

Freshness should work the way you describe it but it doesn't really, see what I've written earlier. Cyanide's thinking must have been that freshness is low while you are preparing for an objective. The easy "cheat" is to set the objectives really early in the season and then freshness won't be a problem afterwards for your "real" objectives.

For example, it would be a mistake to set only LBL as an objective for your Ardennes specialists, freshness will be bad for Amstel Gold and the Fleche Wallone. But it'd be fine to only set Amstel Gold as an objective - as long as you have no more objectives that season or the next one is, say, San Sebastian, months away, freshness will be excellent for all three Ardennes races. Doesn't make much sense, but it works.

But if you do so fitness would be bad on the later races wouldn´t it?

No, fitness will be fine - if you manually adjust the training accordingly. Check the attached screenshot. This is the training/objectives for a cobblestone specialist so he gets the important early objectives, but I also want him in good form for the Eneco Tour, Hamburg, GP Quest and Montreal. In fact, all my one-day specialists have pretty much the same training schedule - San Sebastian, Tour of Poland, Quebec, WC, Lombardia... all with excellent freshness and good fitness, even though none are "officially" objectives.

Thanks Ripley, I will try this out.

Ok still confused. So you need to set objectives before the real objective?

Any other ways of setting freshness?

How does the AI do it?
