After the second rest day this will be the first of four consecutive mountain stages.General classification riders are expected to attack Froome today.
Starting in Digne-les-Bains,the riders will climb 2 category 3 climbs and one category 2 climb, and we will have an intermediate sprint before the start of Col'd Allos.
The Col'd Allos is a 14 km climb averaging at %5.5 .Then after a 16 km descent which is an absolute brute. It’s narrow and technical, but fast, with few hairpins to break up the ordeal. It’s the kind of terrain a rider like Vincenzo Nibali could thrive in.They will climb Pra-Loup which is a 6.2 km climb averaging at %6.5 with the last kilometer averaging %8.Any late challenge for yellow has to start today.
The Pra-Loup is famous for 1975 when one of the most famous Tour moments of all time took place, on one of the long north-south switchbacks of the climb of Pra Loup. Eddy Merckx, the invincible five-time champion, was caught, passed, and left for dead by his French rival Bernard Thévenet. Merckx had attacked Thévenet over the top of the Col d’Allos, and built an advantage on the tricky descent, where he knew Thévenet was vulnerable. However, Merckx started to falter, and Thévenet started to close the gap. When he pulled up to Merckx, he saw that the road surface had melted in a long strip down the middle, just ahead. He jumped to one side of it, knowing that Merckx wouldn’t risk riding through the sticky bitumen to take his wheel, and rode away, into the yellow jersey, into the hearts of the French public, and into the annals of Tour history.
For the 40th anniversary of that event, the Tour returns, to cross the Col d’Allos and climb Pra Loup. Each climb has only been tackled once since 1975, and never in combination. A stage finished in Pra Loup in 1980, while the Tour made a single ascent of the Allos in 2000, in the same direction as in 1975, but with the stage finishing much further north, in Briançon.
In 1975 the result was this
1Bernard Thévenet: 7hr 46min 35sec
2Felice Gimondi @ 23sec
3Joop Zoetemelk @ 1min 12sec
4Lucien van Impe @ 1min 42sec
5Eddy Merckx @ 1min 56sec
6Francesco Moser @ 3min 12sec
7Josef Fuchs s.t.
8Luis Balague @ 5min 26sec
9Raymond Delisle @ 6min 1sec
10Vicente López-Carril @ 6min 16sec
In 1980 Deschoenmaker won from breakaway
1. Jos Deschoenmaecker en 6h25'31"
2. Fernandez à 2"
3. Seznec à 1'30"
4. Peeters
5. Alban
6. Lejarreta
7. Nilsson
8. Bernaudeau
9. Zoetemelk
10. Martin
And this year the exact same stage in Dauphine as in this stage of Tour de France Romain Bardet won after attacking at the descent of Allos. That day Froome was also beaten by Van Garderen.
1Romain Bardet (FRA) Ag2r-La Mondiale 4h 31' 22"
2Tejay van Garderen (USA) BMC Racing Team + 36"
3Chris Froome (GBR) Team Sky + 40"
4Beñat Intxausti (ESP) Movistar Team + 42"
5Simon Yates (GBR) Orica-GreenEDGE + 50"
6Louis Meintjes (RSA) MTN-Qhubeka + 50"
7Andrew Talansky (USA) Cannondale-Garmin + 55"
8Michele Scarponi (ITA) Astana + 57"
9Pierre Rolland (FRA) Team Europcar + 57"
10Mathias Frank (SUI) IAM Cycling + 57"
Stage Contenders
Christopher Froome won the stage 10 summit finish into La Pierre St.Martin which was after the rest day and is leading with over 3 minutes to his nearest rival Nairo Quintana. And with the stage being after the rest day he is the biggest favourite again today.
Nairo Quintana tried to attack Froome on stage 12 and 14 but it came to no avail. If he wants to win Tour de France he should attack and try to gain some time back today. The Colombian gets better as the race goes on and that should be playing in his hands today.
Alberto Contador and Vincenzo Nibali look to get better as the race goes on.And if they are on form they might attack Froome today on the climb of Allos,in the descent of Allos or on the climb to Pra-Loup
Alejandro Valverde might be a good guess for the stage win if the day is raced defensively because he has a great finishing kick
If the breakaway succeeds watch out for Joaquim Rodriguez who is aiming for the polka-dot jersey. Also watch out for Jakob Fuglsang,Thibaut Pinot,Daniel Martin,Rafael Valls,Wico Kelderman,Louis Meintjes,Alexis Vuillermoz,Rigoberto Uran,Ryder Hesjedal,Steven Kruiswijk and so on.

My bet would previously been Majka, but dunno how badly he is injured after that fall today. Anyone have an update on him?
If he haven't recovered, I guess its clear for another Purito show. Cant see the GC-favourites pushing for this one.

I just clicked shut off pc and then cancelled the shutting off process after it had automatically closed your program.
Worked like a charm, do I win?

The pick is Purito for me. Showed he is in good form and has been saving himself for one more crack.
Though another...... breakaway might win. Breakaways can be fun but only when they have to try to stay away. When the peloton lets them go it kinda makes the whole thing pointless and looks bad for the race.
Either means the stage is designed poorly or the riders literally dont give a fuck about that stage. |

Little upset that Tejay isn't an option here (aside from Other), as he already beat Froome on this climb once. I'll stick with him here too as the gradient will favor him and the other slightly more powerful climbers over the lightweight guys.

Not sure exactly which you were watching, all the analysts made it very clear that Tejay did nothing wrong, and Barguil was very much in the wrong.
EDIT: Also this is the forum for the next stage...

K thanks for that info.
It was a joke considering they did a video breakdown of how TVG and Barguil touched and then spent 10 minutes talking about how it wasnt TVGs fault.
I will now post all of my Barguil discuss in this thread thanks to you. |

Rain expected or at least it would have rained and the asphalt will be wet Should be a good one, since Froome won't really like it, especially the descent. I expect Nibali and really hope Conta will finally attack on the descent. |

Wet roads are only an issue until Sky perfects their patented plutonium-powered tire heater that instantly vaporizes any water on the road infront of them.
Since it's after a rest day, and before a very tough period in the Alps, I'de say a breakaway win. The riders might try and save themself, in the sence that they won't chase down a break. Wether or not the favourites start attacking is a completely different thing.
If Movistar or Saxo are going to have a chance, they have to tire out Froomes helpers early on. It isn't enough to wait until Alpe d'huez because the man himself is strong enough to resist several attacks.
Hopefully Sky will be under pressure from day one, that should make for some exiting days to come.

Nah Nibali and Valverde are much stronger now than they were at Dauphine, likewise Froome. TvG appears to be same level and he has clearly said that he is aiming for a podium, which means he will diesal diesal diesal his way up the climbs. This is his way but encourages others such as Movistar number two and turbo Thomas to wheel suck their way up behind him and nail him from behind at the climax.
Quintana for me likely to lead in GC contenders. Breakaway to win unless we get a decent saxo-Movistar alliance early on. Sky are looking to make friends by allowing breaks to win bar penultimate stage I think. J rod looks pretty focussed on getting polka dots - breakaways will need to play Sagan on him, I.e. Not work with him, looking for next French opposing teams screw up also.
